I just pulled my credit report because i'm trying desperately to be able to rent an apartment. Well i was looking at the report and i realized that the Best Buy credit card account i thought was closed 6 months ago is still open.
I have an ex friend who works for best buy who told me if i paid off the card and didn't use it for 6 months, best buy would close the account. Well i was stupid enough to believe him. Problem is, i long ago cut up the bb credit card and threw it away. So now i wanna close the account but i can't do it cause i don't have the account number and i have no idea what to do.

You should be able to get a phone number off their website. Call them, and they can (or should be able to) look up your account w/ your social security number. I actually went through that last spring when I consolidated a bunch of my debt, and there were a couple of cards I no longer had that I had to close that way.

I believe that bestbuy uses HSBC as their credit company. The parent company to Beneficial, Household auto finance, and Household Bank. Yup just checked their site. There phone number is 1-888-367-4310.

Not sure if anyone's covered this yet...but if you check your credit report too many times, it can actually *lower* your credit score.

You checking your own report doesn't hurt you. It's having too many inquiries for credit in a short period of time. If you go out and apply for 12 cards in 2 weeks it hurts because there is a delay from your approval to an open account showing on the report, so there may be a lot of unreported open credit.

well this is only the second time i've ever, in my life, looked at my credit report. my credit score is 735, so if worst comes to worst and it drops a little bit, i figure i should still be fine.

I should have clarified what I meant--too many people checking up on you can lower your score.
When I bought my house, I'm sure I took a little hit--nearly every local government agency had their hand out, and I'm sure they did a little looking ;)

Don't feel too bad, Katie. Mistakes happen. It doesn't mean you're a dipshit. It just means you made a simple mistake. After all, the person you talked to was serving you in a customer service capacity. It's not your fault he gave you lousy customer service by giving you misinformation!

If your credit is giving you trouble with apartment getting- try finding a place that does Sure Deposit (Bond?) instead of or with the regular deposit. The place I'm moving into (today- in just a little while!) has this Sure Bond thing.
They run your credit and base your deposit on your credit. If you have bad credit, yes, you pay a higher deposit but you still get the apartment. I had NO idea what my credit was like and I figured I'd probably be paying one of the higher deposits. Apparently, my credit is pretty good as my Sure Deposit/Bond/thingy was only $88.00. :D

With a 735 beacon I don't think shel'll have any issues. :)

Awesome! I've never heard of this sure bond thing though, so i have no idea how to go about finding out if the place i'm looking at does it. Any ideas?
