I love my 16 month old (affectionatly nick-named "Butt-nugget") very much... But she still won't speak out loud. Still no "mama", no "dada", no "gimme my *bleep*ing bottle, ya' moron."... nothing.
About a month ago she finally started responding to sign language... and "said" her first word... the sign for "eat".
Now we have more good news! She has FIVE signs that she uses all the time!
1) "Diaper", when she needs a clean one.
2) "Eat", when she's hungry.
3) "More", when she wants more of whatever she was eating.
4) "All Done", when she is finished with whatever she's doing (eating, bathing, etc...)
And my favorite...
5) "Baby", when we're talking about the baby in mommy's tummy, or when we're playing with her dolls... SO CUTE!!!:D
She resonds to more signs than she uses... but it's still so cool to see her using sign language, since she won't speak.
Her doctor says it's just her personality. She can hear just fine and makes noise, so it's not anything physical. She just doesn't want to speak out loud.
So... YAY for baby "speaking"!:)

YAY NotSoInnocent! Isn't it wonderful when children speak, no matter what their line of communication is?
In another thread, I mentioned that my daughter is speaking more. No sentences, but she says all sorts of things! And she's practically potty trained! And I didn't have to do it! Go me!
Congrats! Enjoy your baby! I know I enjoy mine.

I have to say that it's wonderful you have a calm doctor in all of this, my sister was the youngest and didn't speak for quiet some time and my mother who was a speach teacher knew it was cause I was the go-between and the bratchilde was just as happy to let me do it for her, and the doctor freaked when she wasn't speaking but 2 words at 18 months.

That's so cool, sign language speaking baby. Congrats on that. And "Butt-Nugget," I'm frightened to ask.
I didnt speak until I was 18 months old (my family always tells me ive been trying to catch up ever since), I had no need to, my older brother was EXTREMELY doting on me so if I even looked hungry it was taken care of.
Very cool that your baby uses signs though!

*chuckles* It's parent speak for "Little Shit"... since she looooooves to get into everything and tries to get her big sisters in trouble all the time. So one day I called her a butt nugget when she was being a little brat.... and her sisters decided that it sounded like a good nickname. The little Butt-Nugget gets a grin every time she's called that, too.

Reminds me of a joke (which I posted somewhere else once upon a time in a different paraphrased form):
Did you hear about the 21-year-old boy who never spoke? One morning at breakfast he looks at his parents and says "This oatmeal tastes like shit!" His parents stare at him in shock, and finally his mother says "Son! You can talk! Why haven't you spoken before?" and the son shrugs and says "Everything was fine until now."
So I guess everything's fine!! :)

Actually.... no. I know some sign from when I was a kid (my great grandma was deaf and I had a best friend who was deaf) so I just teach my kids what I know. ^_^
