Help name our new mail server!

I just got an email from our server admin.

He's getting ready to set up our new mail server (I believe it's going to be on the VMware server....), and he needs name ideas. Currently it's called (enter school initals here)_mail. So, yeah, much room for improvement.

But, our mail server, and our front end mail server (femail) does have a child together, (stumail!) Heh. Mail... femail... funny!!

But seriously, I've run into some interesting server/equipment names over the years. The best, had to be the college's mail server called "blackhole." Pretty damn appropriate, since anything sent to it tended to disappear :lol: Same school had printers named "Fred" and "Wilma" in the library.

Most of our new servers are named after vehicles. We have charger, corvette, gto, jeep and viper.

Can you tell it's just guys over in the server room?

I hate to be boring but even though giving servers cute names is fun, it does make it diffcult (for new people especially, or guys like me who are sent out to upgrade/support a customer environment) to work out what does what once you start deploying a large number of servers (100's or more).

best go with a countrycode-citycode-role# type name

eg the first mail server in sydney australia would be AU-SYD-MAIL1. does make for longer names but it really helps in the long run

Yeah, with that kind of imagination you could easily end up with newschoolname_mail pretty easily :) Even the mascot or some derivative would be better (Like MU used to do.)

My home network workgroup is "Oz" with Tiktok, Tinman, Ozma, Toto, Glasscat, Singra, Kabumpo, Glinda and Wogglebug machines. Toto and Wogglebug are laptops :) and the big raid depository is Kabumpo :lol:
