View Full Version : Who is the "Dog-Washa" and why do you expect me to know of him? (warning: Anime!)

So, yeah, I was the anime geek at both the stores I worked at. The old SM hired me because his old anime geek was leaving after Christmas was over. I could rattle off anime trivia that even other anime-interested coworkers had never heard (for example, I told the new SM that ROD TV stood for Read or Dream, as opposed to the movie, which is Read or Die. He tried to call me on it. I stood firm, he eventually went so far as to call a friend in Kansas to double check, hung up the phone, and lowered his head to me to let me know I was right.)
But anyway, as to the thread title, you would not believe how many teenage girls would come in the store and ask if we had "Inu-Washa".
M: "Ah, yes, the Dog Washa? That anime about the kid who has to go around cleaning up dirty dogs?"
"No, no, that one with the hunky dog-guy samurai thing..."
M: "Ah, Sesshomaruu?"
"No, his brother."
M: "Half-brother. And his name is Inu-Yasha. There isn't a single 'W' in his name."
"They call him Inu-Washa in the anime."
M: "Nope. In the original Japanese, he is most definitely clearly called Inu Yasha. Cartoon Network screwed up on the dubbing, if anything." *thinking: I would posit you just can't be bothered to wrap your tongue around the correct pronunciation of his name.*
Admittedly, however, I did get my just desserts, as one anime regular we had in started quizzing me on my knowledge, which I beat, handily enough to get a "Bonus points!" comment from her, and then I mispronounced some minor character's name in some anime I hate (probably: DragonBall) and she took the "Bonus points" back, until the next time she saw me.

Maybe it's me, but I don't hear Inu-Washa. Oh well, occasionally my ears do work for me. Just never when I want it to.
I can't remember my own families names half the time, you think my brain cells are going to be bothered with remembering minor sidekicks names?

God, I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate (dai, dai, dai, dai kirai) that anime. Its the fanboy equivalent of Naruto for girls . Still, I hate it when I'm talking to people about anime and they get appalled that I can't watch what cartoon network puts on, not because its not good, but because the dubbing sucks my right butt cheek. The only dub I could remotely watch was Cowboy Bebop...and even that had its moments.

i went to a vintage stock one time and the counter guy was hitting on me (in the "YAY!! a girl geek!!" kinda way) and he was kinda cute so i asked him to fetch things behind the counter for me, so i asked to look at the fooly cooly cd (showing off my grammar and using the japanese pronunciation where you kinda say l and r at the same time) and hes like wha?? and points to the cd next to it, then tho one on the other side of the wrong one, then finally to fooly cooly and said, (snotty voice cause thats how it went in my head) "I'm sorry, i know that anime by the japanese pronunciation "Furry Curry"" lets just say he wasnt to cute after that :)

For the record, Viz* didn't screw up the dubbing. They clearly say Inu-Yasha. I hear InWasha around here, too. It's generally people that don't watch anime all that often or just don't know how to properly pronounce Japanese names.
I'm not surprised, since quite a few people can't pronounce my last name correctly, either. While it's not a very common name, it's pronounced exactly how it's spelled and people still get it wrong!
*Viz does the dubbing. CN just puts it on TV.
and he was kinda cute so i asked him to fetch things behind the counter for me,
Six episodes, not bad....

Personally, I hate it when people correct me in a snotty way. I imagine if a customer said that exact same thing to you, you wouldn't like it. If somebody did that to me in a store I would have to restrain myself from calling them a pompous ass to their face.

I never said anything against it. I just said that I hate it. Mostly because my tastes in anime run toward the magical series... Scrapped Princess, Sorceror Hunters, Miyazaki (drool) that sort of stuff...

Fair enough. But I never actually said it to anyone unless they'd been pissing me off, with things like: "Sesshomaruu is a god unto us poor, lonely girls. We need some SesshxInuYasha/Kagome/Vash/etc. slash!"

"Oh Em Gee! InuWasha is teh gr33test anime evar! It's so much better than, say, Fuushigi Yuugi."

Heck, people mispronounce my last name all the time....and it is a fairly common word, too. And English word. That people use often. And they still screw it up. Face it, people are stupid....just ask George Carlin.

There are a number of anime that could easily have come from. I'd assume you are referring to Neon Genesis Evangelion, a series where the entirety of the story has nothing to do with God. I'll give you a moment to chew that one over.
*grin*
Ready?
Who in the story is the main character? -Shinji.
Why does the story follow him? -The whole plot is about Shinji opening up to people.
What do the Angels have to do with anything? -Hideaki Anno wanted to seem like he was making a hugely anti-Christianity series. (See also: the upside-down cross explosions into Tokyo 3.)

ah, the anime mispronunciations, we just love them, don't we. Sometimes it gets so bad, I don't even know WTH they're talking about :P
Personally I HATE Inuyasha. My friend informed me that this is actually based on manga that was written years and years ago, and only just turned into an anime now?
I'm still a fan of the original Gundam, Hellsing, and Azumanga Daioh. Weirdly, my friends never found Azu. Daioh funny

Last I heard, the manga was up to 28 books and still climbing. Kumiko (yes, it really is Kumiko, not Rumiko) Takahashi wrote the series after Ranma 1/2, and Maison Okaku. Azumanga Daioh is awesome.

Blech, Fushigi Yugi would've been a great show if it had a different protagonist. Miaka has to be one of the most vacuous and downright irritating heroines I've ever had to misfortune to be subjected to in anime.
