Well, today's my birthday. So, my family and I went out to my favorite restaurant for lunch. Then we went to the bakery to pick out a cake. My mom told the girl behind the counter to write "Happy Birthday Allison" on the cake. The girl looked at my mom blankly and goes, "What?" My mom repeats the request. The girl asks one more time. Again, we repeat the request. Then the counter girl goes, "Allison? Is that a girl's name? I've never heard of that before." :wtf: I know my name might not be common, but you'd think that at some point in this girl's life, she would have heard the name "Allison" and made some connection to it belonging to that of the female species. Apparently not. So we confirm that yes, Allison is a girl's name. My mom points to me and tells her that it's my name. She looks at me in my pink skirt, pink blouse, high-heeled dress shoes, little black purse, and make-up and declares that I look nothing like a female. Okay, I get that a lot, but come on. I was in full "girly-gear." Anyways, she asks how to spell my name. Fair enough question. My name is spelled several ways. We spell it. She asks to spell it again. We do. Now she wants us to write it down, not once, but twice. Are we sure we spell it like that? Oh, that's an S? I thought you said T. Then she asks what color frosting, and we say pink. She picks up the blue frosting. We want pink. No, not yellow. Pink. The one on your left. Your other left. No, not purple. I don't care if it looks better in purple. Pink is my favorite color. No I will not change my favorite color! Pink, dammit, Pink! At this point, I don't care if my damn name is on the cake or not, I just want my damn cake! Finally, we get the cake, go home, and begin to cut it up. Upon seeing the inside of the cake, we discover that we got a vanilla cake instead of a chocolate one. We ate it anyway and it was delicious.

When did Allison ever become a guys' name? I know lately, people have been exceptionally cruel to their kids and naming them ones that are so odd, you can't tell if it is a boys' or girls' name regardless of spelling or pronounciation, but come on, I knew 3 "Allison's" throughout school, and while all of them spelled their name the same way, NONE of them were boys.
That chick needs to lay off the reefer.

I don't think Elvis Costello (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLesCQvXVUw) was singing about a guy...
Sorry you had to put up with such a braindead twit!

So because she thinks you're a boy then she's gonna treat you like one? AND Allison IS a girls name. I've never met a guy with that name. What guy would want a girly name anyway?...lol.

Allison is the 228th most common female name in the country. Heck, there's always someone named Allison around. How could she have gone this long without hearing a girl with the name Allison? Crazy kids.

After we walked out of the bakery, I heard my dad whisper to my mom, "I told you we should have named her Amanda." Yeah, I have two cousins named Amanda. One older than me, and one two months younger than me. Plus, my parents knew her name was going to be Amanda while she was still in the womb.

I know a few Allisons. I can't believe somebody would think it's that uncommon of a name.
Oh, and.....
Da da da da da daaaaaaaa.....they say it's your birthday!

When did Allison ever become a guys' name?
Well, it was a guys' name at least once in 1928 (my Dad) and again in 1976 (my son).
I'm fairly certain it is more common as a female name in the last 30 years or so (which is why it's my son's middle name and not his first name), but there was a time where it was not uncommon as a name for a male.

The rampant disjointed stupidity + colourblindness is one thing but declaring you look nothing like a female, thats out of line, imo. -.-
My name is painfully common <wince> like #2 in the US for boys.

Happy birthday!
Sorry the cake person was sucky :( If you swing by South Africa for your next birthday, I'll bake you a choc-chunk banana bread cake. With cookies. And I'll give it pink icing too, how's that? :D

Oh, man I think I would have just told her to forget it. And what's with writing the name twice?! That's just extra stupid.
If I were getting a cake with my name on it I would definitely write what I wanted it to say. My name causes way more problems than it should. It's really not that hard but it's different and I guess it throws people off. Though once I went to the doctor and when they called me in they said "Allison" - my name starts with "All-" but come on, read the other half, please!
There are a lot of names that we consider girls' names that were once boys' names - Leslie, Kim, Beverly, Ashley...hell, Mr. Belvedere's name was Lynn...:D Click here (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/28/magazine/28wwln-idealab-t.html) for an article on the topic. Oh, and associating pink and blue with specific genders really started around the turn of the century (1900s), except pink was for boys and blue was for girls...(click here (http://www.colormatters.com/colors_pink.html) for that one).
Happy (belated) Birthday!!

Don't forget, John Wayne's real name was Marion Morrison.
And around here, you find men named Guadelupe and Conceptión.

What was with that person.
It does not matter what the name is, or their sex.
If a customer says they want a certain name on the cake and even spell it out for you, then give the customer what they ask for. The same applies for the colour, if the customer says they want pink, then give them pink. It was their choice, you don't have to live with them or the cake afterwards.
That person has to be one of the dumbest people walking the earth. Maybe they encountered so many "Ali"s that they don't realize it's short for Allison.
I agree, the unisex names are driving me nuts. Ok, Danny and Kelly....fine, you wanna name your boy Kelly, fine. But Stacey? Tracey? No offense to any males named Stacey or Tracey, but I have no other choice than to believe your parents must have really wanted a girl instead.
And girls wanting to be called Mike and not Mickey or Michelle.......where's my salmon?

Like Stacey Keach and Tracy Morgan? Or Stacy Augmon (played for UNLV '89-'91)? :p
