There seem to be a lot of manga/anime fans on this board (I am deducing this through avatars, signatures and comments I have read ), so I am wondering- what kind of stuff do you watch and what are your favorite shows/movies/manga?

I will read or watch anything as long as the story looks interesting. Pretty art is no replacement for a good story, although it's a plus. I am not interested in stories about teenagers or high school romance, cute kids with made-up animal friends or boys who live in a dormitory where all the other residents are girls (or vice-versa). I like dark, mature story lines that actually have something to say. I'm all for yaoi and yuri as long as there is are believable characters and an actual plot.

Currently I am reading:

Mushishi
Blade of the Immortal
Satsuma Gishiden
Apothecarius Argentum
Emma
Monster

I am watching:

Mushishi
Ghost Hound
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Captain Harlock (1978)

By reading and watching of course I mean, reading and watching and then waiting months for the next installment.

Some of very favorite manga are Blade of the Immortal, Berserk, X, Tokyo Babylon and MPD Psycho (yeah, I'm serious about that last one).

Princess Mononoke is my favorite anime film ever, followed by Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, the Ghost in the Shell movies and Macross Plus.

As for shows, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Kino's Journey, Captain Harlock, RahXephon, X, Mushishi, and Monster are among my favorites.

Also, I cosplay. What a geek! I turn 30 in a little over a year though so I will retire then.

So what do you like to watch/read? I hope this will be a thread where people can trade recommendations and discuss their favorite anime and manga!

My favorite one is Get Backers (anime and manga). I ADORE that series! :D

Others I've seen/read that I've liked:

Hellsing (Vampires with BIG guns, whee!)
Yami no Matsuei (Dead gay detectives! Sort of...)
Weiss Kreuz (Ninja florists that fight crime!)
Gravitation (Boy bands with angst!)

Ones I've seen that I didn't care for so much:

DN Angel (Daisuke just annoys me. GROW A SPINE already!!)

Ones I've seen bits of, or heard of, and would like to see more:

FAKE (Live gay detectives. Really.)
Bastard!
Trigun

I would LOVE to cosplay, but as yet I've never been able to cough up the money for it, nor am I able to travel long distances due to vehicular issues (and money). *sigh*

Fake is one of the better yaoi series. The relationship develops naturally and the crime stories are interesting enough. But the best part is getting to see what a Japanese manga-ka thinks New York City is like- it's pretty funny at times!

Bastard! is funny as hell. Ninja Master Gara is awesome! ;) And I love that everything is named after metal bands, except the wimpy guard who always gets his ass kicked. His name is....Bon Jovina.

 Say what one will about that particular band, but I think it's pretty telling that they're still around and going strong (maybe not quite with the same numbers as they used to in their glory days, but still pretty impressive) long after most of their counterparts have made their one-hit-wonder impression on the music scene. ;)

Princess Mononoke is my favorite anime film ever

Me too. In fact, I have a kodoma tattooed on the inside of my right ankle. :o

I have only recently been intro'd to the world of anime/manga outside of Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki, and so far, some of my faves are Hot Gimmick, Pet Shop of Horrors, The Devil Does Exist, Fruits Basket and Ouran High School Host Club, to name a few manga. Anime is something I'm hoping to have more time for, and more recommendations on, in the future. :D

World's Strongest Fighter Kenichi
Combat Butler Hayate
Slayers TV series
Key the Metal Idol
Bastard!
Gundam 00 (We call it Buckshot Gundam,)
Utawarerumono - One of the best series I've seen in a long time. Mononoke fans will probably like it.

Edited to add:

Oh, and the new Macross series (Origional was used to make Robotech here in the states) It looks really good so far, other than the male heroes all being bishi. But they play it off for comedy, so we'll see.

I guess I could also throw in the following, which are technically classed as animes:

Streetfighter
Pokemon
Samari Pizza Cats

And also Akira, which I saw as a small child. XD My older brother had it.

I love Sailor Moon! I always have. Been a die hard fan for 10 years and am currently making my own doujinshi.

I'm reading Hellsing, full moon, crimson hero...and some others...uh...confidential confessions.

I'm watching mushishi, samurai seven, and death note. I still don't know what I think about death note. I like it so far, but it's one of those that could go down hill easily.

Sailor Moon has a special place in my favorite anime list. I remember watching it when it came on FoxKids all those years ago.

Some of my favorites...

Sailor Moon
Fushigi Yuugi
Saiyuki
Gravitation
Kyo Kara Maoh
CardCaptor Sakura
Outlaw Star
Trigun
Magic Knights Rayearth

And various others. I can't really afford my anime/manga hobby these days.

I do frequent veoh.com...it's just that I like having the feel of dvds in my hand and also, veoh.com doesn't cater to my manga obsessions either. And there is anime I want to see, but apparently no one else likes so it's not on veoh.com or any other website, but it's on the shelf at the anime store, mocking me with it's thirty dollar price sticker...

Anime I have and or watched and love immensly:

Card Captor Sakura (the japanese version not the US version. For those who have only seen the US version we got probably 1/4 of the episodes)

Samurai 7
Full Metal Alchemist
Chobits
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
The Last Exile (highly reccommend this one, I watched all 26 episodes in one sitting it was so good)
.hack/sign
Bleach (again Japanese version)
Naruto (again japanese version)
Final Fantasy Unlimited
Noir
Hunter x Hunter (again highly recommended)
Chrono Crusade (another highly recommended one)
Ruroni Kenshin (i know its been mentioned and again highly recommended)
Armitage III (the third not 3, and if you can get the OVA not the movie)
Ghost in the Shell 1&2 and Stand Alone Complex
Witch Hunter Robin (again highly recommended)
Tsubasa Chronicles (if you like Card Captors or anything by clamp this is worth checking out)

There are many more I am sure I am forgetting to mention. Needless to say I tend to prefer Anime over US television :)

I can't believe none of you suggested The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (or however they're translating the title into English). It's got to be one of the best anime series I've seen.

I also liked (trying not to repeat others):
Midori no Hibi
Yakitate Japan! - good for a laugh
Suzuka
Full Metal Panic (first series is okay, Fumoffu is hilarious, don't bother with The Second Raid)

And I can't forget mentioning Hikaru no Go, which was the first series I watched. It takes a special kind of person to really enjoy that series, which I am.

Chanlin, I think you and I have the same taste in anime. Cuz you just posted the same list I would have. Except for Bleach or Naruto, but I've never seen the Japanese versions.

Except for Bleach or Naruto, but I've never seen the Japanese versions.

Lets just say the US versions are heavily edited for both blood and dialog and the US voice actors sound like crap compared to the Japanese ones. I just wish some US companies would get it through their head that despite the looks these shows are generally geared toward adults and that editing, except to maybe change some references a US or any other non Japanese citizen wouldnt get, should be out of the question.

 I also like to buy the DVDs, but right now I am strapped for cash. I did manage to buy the entire Elfen Lied series for just a tenner a little while ago in the HMV sale. Sadly, HMV with its massive price tags is the only place near me that even sells anime. -.-
