"Hi, I'm Rapscallion calling from ***********, just returning your call from yesterday?"

"Oh yes! I want to know if you can point me in the right direction. I took two paintings to the local picture framing company and left them there. Within a week, the place had been broken into and the paintings were stolen. What are my rights?"

"..."

"Hello?"

"Um, since we're a wholefood wholesaler, I'm not really qualified to give legal advice. I'd suggest talking to the local Citizens Advice Bureau..."

"Oh, thanks!"

Um...

...

Have you ever taken a call where you're certain the other person accidently dialed the wrong number? I think this is one of those times.

Nope - she knew who we are. She gets supplies from us every so often. Just phoned us up to know what to do about her problem.

You have the Right to remain Silent.

No, scratch that. You have the obligation, nay the duty to remain silent! As a patriotic and right-minded citizen, you MUST remain silent, or the Terrorists will win! 9/11! 9/11! 9/11!!!

I have had way, way, WAY too many customers ask me what they need to do to get tax exempt status.
My stock response is now, "Talk to the government. They'll know, I don't."

Had someone ask me today where the nearest Mikasa store is.
"Um... there's one in a mall somewhere around here, I've been in it before... which mall is that...? Oh, yeah, Willow Bend!"
Isn't there one closer?
"Not that I've seen. Of course, I'm not in the "buying fine glassware" portion of the shopping public, so, I don't really pay attention to their stores."

I, too, would have thought this was a simple wrong number. It baffles me why they thought a food wholesaler would know. But, as the adage goes, the older I get the baffleder I become.

When I worked on cash and answered phones, I used to answer all kinds of "can you give me random information completely unrelated to your job" type calls.

If there was a parade or major event in town, we got calls asking about start times and locations.
One time, I actually got a call about a turkey dinner being held at a local church hall.
They wanted to know what the time and admission were, and did I have any idea what was on the menu?
I guess they figured we had a sign posted in our lobby or something.

I occasionally get asked for financial advice. In the phone book we're listed right under a completely different and unrelated company that's name is my store name with "financial advisors" after it.

That reminds me of a story that someone sent into Readers Digest awhile back. The guy who sent the story was a cop, and one day he got a call at work from a woman who wanted to know how to baste a turkey.

As luck would have it, he knew how, and told her what to do. At the end of the call, he asked her why she'd call the police station for information on basting a turkey. There was a slight pause, and then the woman replied, "Well, you knew, didn't you?" and hung up.

Ew. I'm guessing they gave the turkeys grain and bugs for dinner instead. :)

Or you could have broken into song:

And number 2
You have the right to food money
Providing of course you
Don't mind a little
Investigation, humiliation
And if you cross your fingers
Rehabilitation

what's that?
As per much of my post, Mikasa is a higher-end fine china outlet. I only know of them because my Mom collects a particular plate pattern from them.

This would be a bad time to mention I've been looking into Cargo Container Homes (http://www.fabprefab.com/fabfiles/containerbayhome.htm), wouldn't it.

What's Mikasa? Just type "mikasa.com" into your browser and it should redirect you to their site.

Although I certainly wouldn't call it "higher-end" at all, however. It's more "middle class" china. My ex and I chose our wedding pattern from the local Mikasa outlet. The pattern was Opus Black and was black china with calla lily accents. It's been discontinued. Which is a shame because it's rather attractive.

I resemble that remark !

I can give advice on what to do if you've been ripped off. So instead I get calls like :

The woman I talked to for 5 minutes - giving her advice about making her landlord repair her boiler - before discovering that she thought I was actually the boiler repair company. She'd called the wrong number, she had limited English and I'm just oblivious. Not sure who was more confused.

Someone who wanted me to register a birth

Someone who asked me to recommend a church (as part of a longer enquiry relating to people using black magic against him).

People who think I know everything. You think you've been ripped off - fine, here's what to do. But I can't understand what went wrong when the mechanic worked on your car, or what the roofer should have used. I don't want to see pictures of your fence. Or injuries. I'm not a doctor - showing me does not help. I certainly do not want to see the bruise on your bottom !

Incidentally I collect weird referrals - I'd like someone sent in by a health food wholesaler. The best I've got was someone sent in by B&Q DIY store (They were worried by the amount of rat poison she was buying - we sent her to the council's extermination service. Good for the B&Q staff member for worrying about her, and for being willing to sell less poison to her if it was the right thing to do).

I do get a fair number of people who get sent in by the police after being told no law has been broken. These include victims of fraud, theft and on one occasion someone who had received a bomb/death threat... Just because they don't want to deal with it doesn't mean that's not a criminal offence!

As someone on the flip side of that remark, we very often dont get told *all* pertinant details to see whether or not its a criminal or civil matter, you'd be amazed at the amount of civil disputes that the police do get called to though (difference in opinion on how much a bill should be is for example a civil matter, custody of the cat following seperation again civil).

In my experience they often have very good reasons for wanting not to be involved - and they are almost always cases which have no chance of being resolved by the police.

The man threatening to blow up a building had mental health problems, and while possibly violent was not capable of anything requiring planning.

The theft/fraud is a bit more annoying - in that people often just need the crime reference number. Without that you can't claim on insurance. If you (as in one example) put something into a shop for repair and the shop closes over night and the owner runs away with your stuff - that is theft, and if you have a reference number and home insurance which covers items out of the house you may actually get some of your money back.

Mostly it would just be better if they explained "while X is a crime we believe it isn't possible to take action because..." it leads to less confusion. And means people don't get angry with me when I tell them I can't help them because it is criminal.

On the other side I saw a woman who had managed to make the police phone the gas company regarding an accidental cut off. Still can't imagine how awkward she must have been to persuade them to do that.

To flip that, several years ago, I was working processing applications for heating assistance for an orgainzation. Oddly enough, if you were able to get your money together to get your power turned back on after hours, you called the police department.

I think that was only during a very very VERY cold weekend, but still.
