Does this go in Unsupportable or Sightings?
A friend of mine used to work at a compute shop, he now runs his own shop.
One day my friend fixed a computer and what should he see but a kiddie porn wallpaper. Naturally he called the police. On the day the customer was due to pick up that computer, two detectives pretended to work at the store (so the real staff got to sit around in the back room doing playing games, after they'd done all the technical work that needed doing that day. It's amazing how much you can get done when you don't have customers interrupting you.) Conversation went like this:
detective: "Is this your computer?"
idiot: "Yes."
detective: "You're under arrest."
The cops also took the computer with them, and some weeks later it lead to the breaking of a child porn ring. I forget how many arrests there were but it was more than a few.

We had a running joke that the first step in properly diagnosing a computer was searching for jpgs. Usually, anything found of the adult variety was deleted. Anything found of the illegal variety was reported. We've found things ranging from kids to animals. make syou wonder who's twisted more, the person that downloads it or the person that shoots and/or models for it.

Well the legal stuff can be considered a job. The illegal stuff you know the models don't want to do it. Kiddie porn is one of those things that make me want to use a woodchipper. Bastards.

Please tell me you didn't delete adult stuff ... even if it was legal.

It was policy that it was deleted. I don't know if it was official or just our director's edict, but if we found it, it was to be deleted, unless it was illegal and therefore needed to be reported.
It caused a stink later on with threats of lawsuits for invading privacy, but nothing ever came of it. They hid behind a clause in the waiver that said they weren't responsible for data on the hard drive. It's been years since I worked there, but I imagine it still goes on.

Lesson to be learned; back up your porn before sending your computer in for repair.

Nice one. I remember one of my college's exchange students got busted for kiddie porn. Not only did he get arrested, but he got tossed out of school, and later deported.

Stacy, the drunken manager from my first job...
We were all so sure she would never be fired, because she was sleeping with the general manager. On the clock, which would technically make it prostitution, I'm sure. Sexual harassment, no doubt, because she was completely incompetant and this was the only way she kept her job. Anyway, one of the counter girls on the morning shift brought in her laptop. She and Stacy sat in a booth, screen facing away from the counter, and spent literally four hours--the counter girl's entire shift--looking at the computer. The employees figured they had internet and just worked twice as hard to make it up. Unfortunately for Stacy, one of the customers to come in was the wife of the owner of the entire chain, and in a family-owned-and-operated chain, she was the equivalent of the vice CEO, and the second cousin of my general manager. A screen facing away from the counter is facing towards the rest of the dining room...they were both fired without notice, and the cops were called on the owner of the laptop. Wonderful. And my manager wondered why I needed to quit so badly.

please tell your friend i said "THANK YOU" with giant hugs.
it's good to know they're being put where they belong
namely in a nice lil cell where they can be some man's bitch.
and yes...that still happens.
a guy i know got a dwi a couple of years ago and in VA you have to be in jail for 2-3 days before they let you out. while he was getting processed, there was another guy who was in for child-related stuff like that... and while the guards were out, the molester got roughed up. it was pretty obvious, but when the guards came back in....they didn't seem to notice any difference.

now that ... eh, if the pics aren't illegal, why are they being deleted? unless it's a work computer i mean.

standard public exposure policy. When you explain to the customer, you have to show them the problem, or when asking questions they have to show you the problem. If there's any adult material that can be visible to the public in this process, the company can face fines and lawsuits. So as a safety net, any adult material needs to be deleted to avoid this. It's easier to fight the deleting adult content lawsuit than it is the displaying adult content lawsuit.

No public exposure with our setup, but we were a mixed group of techs (male & female), some idiots have porn in their screen saver! Normal practice was to turn the screen saver off, but every now and then someone had one of those free-downloaded-screen-saver that also set off a virus alert.
Half the time the pictures(notably the animated ones) were embedded or otherwise coupled to the code, wipe the screen saver, and the pictures get wiped too. :)

/imagines some dry-pool diving team member marching back into the store and going ballistic. "What did you go and delete all my pr0n for?! It took me FOREVER to find all that S&M and bukkake!"
