So I'm in class today and its the first day. The teacher wants to 'get to know us better' by asking the following question:
State your name and a country you would like to visit for 2 weeks if it was all expense paid.
Well, one genius had this to say: "Hi, my name is _____, and I'd like to go to Germany. I've always wanted to go to Amsterdam."
later he asks the teacher: "Is English the official language of Germany?"
"No German is."
"Dammit! I dont want to learn german!"

My brain exploded from that. Amsterdam is in the damn Netherlands, where the hell did he get the idea that it was in Germany? By the way, for that question, it'd be Japan or France. I am a huge fan of Japanese culture, but I'd like to check out the Parisian nightlife and the French culture.

Yay. I live BrassCowboy's dream. :)
For me, Iceland. Those Icelanders. Only nation in the world to beat the Kiwis in attitude. And coming from a Kiwi, that's a lot.

He probably wanted to go to Amsterdam because he knows that marijuana and prostitution is legal there. That is unfortunately what the city is known for in colleges, I believe.
Edit: I would have picked the UK. Before, I would have picked somewhere in central Europe, but I luckily had the time of my life in Austria earlier this year!

Not legal - just tolerated. It's still an offence on their statute books, but they tend to spend their resources cracking down on the major crimes. They also rake in a pretty penny in tourism, so I can't imagine them cracking down too much in the near future.
It would be a nicer place if it wasn't for all the tourists. I went there some years ago. Link! (http://www.literarybastard.org.uk/amstwarning.htm)

Isn't the trouble in Hostel set in the Eastern Bloc anyway?

That reminds me of what happened when I told a friend I was going to Austria. They replied, "Oh really?! Going down under to see the kanagaroos?!"
Amazing.
