Now that I have your attention...
I am currently teaching English to schoolchildren in Japan. So far it's going great; Japanese children are very sweet and fun to teach (there are exceptions of course, the kind that make you want to rip out your ovaries to ensure you will never ever breed, but overall the kids are great).
Teaching has been quite a learning experience. For example, one of the first Japanese words I learned from my students was "baka" (meaning stupid, idiot, etc). I also leaned about "kancho", which is the Japanese version of Indian Burns/Pink Belly/Purple Nurple/Smurf Bite; they poke you in the butt with both index fingers, as if giving you an enema. They usually do it to each other, but I've been a victim more than once.
But the funniest story concerns boobs, and the young Japanese student attempting to cop a feel. I myself have trouble filling out an A cup, but once in awhile a kid will try to grab the forbidden fruit. Most Japanese women aren't much bigger than me, so you can imagine how a Japanese boy would react when confronted with the D-cups of my Canadian coworker "Kate".
Kate told me stories about how some of her older students would gape at her and say "oopai...oopai" under their breath (guess what it means). One day as she let out one of her classes (11 and 12 years old), one boy lingered, taking an extra long time to pack up. The other students were gone by the time he was done, and Kate ended up walking him to the door. Suddenly he "tripped" and grabbed her boob for "support" (the trip was so forced it was obvious he planned it). Still, my friend was , and let out a yelp; her student looked at her in fear before fleeing from the classroom as fast as he could.
Kate was more amused than angry; she was laughing as she told the story. I usually find the occasional attempt to grab my boobs funny too, although I make sure to let the child know in a calm but firm voice that that kind of behavior is not acceptable.
Maybe it's just a Japanese thing. All you customerssuck gentlemen never tried to pull a stunt like that when you hit puberty, riiiiiight?
Side note: Anyone else on this board ever teach English in Asia? I've been here almost ten months and plan to stay a total of 2 or 3 years. I'd love to hear your experience and/or our advice.

Hahaha, kancho. I've heard about that. Read about it in journal entries from some guy who moved to Japan and taught there. He said guys would try to do it to him all the time. I gotta look for those entries sometime.

Dad's been over to China to teach English at least twice. Most of the people he dealt with were very nice, and enthusiastic. Over there, they don't have many opportunities to "practice" their language skills. These are people who *want* to learn our language, but also what Americans were really like.
One of his most popular things, was about what really goes on over here. He said that they were most interested about things that would be found in a typical American home. Not what was *available* but what he actually had. So he took over quite a few photos of the house, our cars (including the MG in bits!), my cat, etc. All of that went over very well.
He was actually sad he didn't get to return last year. The program got temporarily sidelined over lack of volunteers :(

Ah yeah my friend in the Navy when he was based at Yokohama said the JDF guys would find that funnny. Goes to show no matter where you go in the world certain things remain the same......

Not somethign as blatently obvious as the fake trip grab but I do remember the ummm yawn and stretch accidentally let them walk into your outstretched palm cop as they walk up the aisle behind you in lab. Not that I have direct knowledge of that....:angel:

That's just what they want you to think. At least the kids are still young, so their plans won't bode to well.

My friend V taught English in China for a while. She enjoyed it. I'll try and talk to her and see what comes up. Might be a while though as her school and my school are in exam mode.

Or you could be like me and be raised around girls your whole life, and your best friend is a girl. That sort of thing gets eliminated quickly.

I'm told that "chi-chi" is also another Japanese word for boobs...
Fun With Swearing: Add "-yaro" to the end of "baka" and you get "bakayaro", which means "stupid asshole." Ahh, the things one can learn from anime.

Antabaka for "effing idiot." Chichi means "mother's breast."

Anta (you are) baka (idiot)...err not you, unholypet, just clarifying! My mother was fond of using the word bakatare (bahkah-tahray..but with the Japanese soft R sound). Chichi is breast, never heard that it was a mother's breast in particular.
One of my kids likes to say "boobie", I keep trying to get her to say breast instead. :sigh: My other kid said "Emily's mommy has breasts!" in front of Emily's mommy, so embarrassing.
A friend of mine taught English in Japan for a few years, and I think her sister is doing so now. She said it was great, she really enjoyed her time there.

Heh. This thread is making me think of an early episode of Zatch Bell (or Gash Bell).
There is a character in the series that is a pop idol who has a hit single called Chichi Moge. Which translates, roughly, to "plucking boobs". The character in question actually spends an episode hitting a bunch of shops and groping the female shopkeepers, who are all thrilled that they got groped by this pop idol. The whole episode is all kinds of wrong.
Needless to say, it was rather .... changed for the English translation.

Is that where you heard it from?
I've been studying from a friend in the Hirosaki region, and she tells me mine are the correct translations. =x

I'm sansei (3rd generation Japanese American) on my dad's side and nisei on my mom's side. I grew up speaking it and hearing it a lot from my mom and aunties. My grandparents only spoke Japanese despite living for 60 years in the US (although - it was Hawaii, and there are tons of Japanese speaking people there). I don't formally speak it now - as in full grammatically correct sentences (kinda lost that as a kid) but I know lots of words and can usually figure out what somebody is saying. My mom speaks very little English and I speak not a whole lot of Japanese, so we talk to each other in a half Japanese/half English gobbleygook - but we can understand each other.
There's a t shirt that says "I'm with bakatare" but I can't find a picture. Bummer.

I have a character named Baka Neko.
I once had some South American in a chat room mock me for my name because 'baka' had a similar meaning in whatever his language was. I gave him a lot of shit for being a dumbass. He'd earned it.

Huh, well there are a lot of ethnically Japanese people in Brazil and Peru, big migrations there a long time ago. I wouldn't be surprised if some Japanese words got co-opted into mainstream use.
At work we used to use this sort of game called xneko. A co-worker had thought it was pronounced 'neek-o' and kept asking me "are you sure it's pronounced neck-o?? you sure?". Yeah, I'm sure!

I came here specifically just to post a link to the Chi Chi Moge. It's good to see I'm not the only anime saturated devious mind present.

That's pretty much par for the course in anime, remarkably enough. The watered down stuff we get here in America hardly compares half the time.
www.gaijinsmash.net - great read for anyone.
My major was Japanese, although it's been a few years since I've taken any courses. I've learned to at least SOUND fluent, and speak with no accent when I do. That's a huge thing that watching anime and speaking and even singing! Japanese has helped with. However, speak the way characters normally do in anime and you're going to get slapped ;)

For some overdone fan service with bizarre plots, you could always check out THIS (http://youtube.com/watch?v=clQRILLOB8c&feature=related).
Warning: That link is most likely not quite safe for work. Heck, I'm not sure it's safe for sanity....
... please... just ignore the awful English voice acting.... ^_^;
