We felt it at about 4:36 last night local time. I was actually having trouble sleeping and was awake. Suddenly there was a rumbling noise coming from the floor and the bed starting shaking pretty good, enough to rattle the window. My wife woke up and yelled, "What is that!" and (remembering the light tremor I felt in '86 when I was in the 5th grade) I just said, "Earthquake!" After about 20-30 seconds it stopped and I called the news station to confirm it and the line was busy. It was then I knew what it was. Quite frankly I expected the ceiling to start coming down because they say we're due up for a California-style "Big One" in nearby Missouri since a quake hit there once that was strong enough to make the Mississippi River run backwards! After it was done I just said to my wife, "If it starts again and gets worse get under the doorway!"

Appearantly it was centered in a town in southern Illinois and was felt as far north as Michigan and as far south as Northern Georgia. I'm surprised I haven't found any new cracks in the walls or basement.

I used to like earthquakes when i lived in CA. Even the Northridge quake. Of course, I probably would feel differently if it had hurt anyone I know or caused damage to my home, etc.
But it just seemed like everyone was nicer to eachother after a quake.

Glad you are OK and no damage.

It drives me nuts how the local news media here in Ohio are making a big deal out of this. I swear one station must have had every reporter they have out on a different street corner interviewing anyone and everyone. "we now continue our live team coverage of todays earth shattering events"  I never felt a thing, i didn't even know about any earthquake until i was reading the local news online here.
