View Full Version : Why ASS-uming things is bad

Lingering Grin's post about an sc experience with his mom brought this experience to mind. I figured if anyone could understand the shock and horror followed by sweet, sweet rage this brought on it would be the good people of CS.

Background: Women in my family are very young looking. My mom, who is in her forties, has been accused of still being a teenager for as long as I can remember. Part of it is she is genuinely young looking, the other reason is because she is small.*important* We look vaguely related, but don't particularly look like close relatives.

So my mom and I decide we are in need of a few clothes. A local Wal-mart seems as likely a place to find some as any, so off we go. After finding some seemingly acceptable clothes, we just need to try them on. All is going well so far. There is a line so we joke around and talk, during which time my mom probably referred to me as "honey" or something similar at least once.
Finally our turn comes, we gather our clothes and ask for a room together so we don't have to keep running between rooms to share and receive opinions.

Me- I will be playing this role
Mom- woman who spawned me
IS- ignorant saleslady

IS- <makes as if to hand us two keys, is giving the stink eye for some reason>
Mom- Oh, we just need one fitting room please.
SL- <huffs> Oh no. We don't allow people like you to go into rooms together.
Me + Mom- ...what?
SL- People like you! Doing things in our rooms! We don't allow that sort of thing here. <glares with self important rage>
Me + Mom- <confused as hell>
Me- <!> Wait, what the hell? <light bulb goes off> Gah, that is just wrong!
Mom- <takes a min longer to get it> Wha- <> Lady I don't know what the hell you think you know, but she is my daughter! That is disgusting*! I can't even deal with you, <to me> we are leaving. Now!

We did stop to find a manager on our way out, and explain that she had an employee who had really, really bad judgment and who was also a bigot.

Mentioning that incident still sets my mom off on a tangent. Having a mom who looks like a young stranger, yet who still calls you "honey" and "babe" can create some interesting situations (if I had a dollar for every time someone asked us for a menage a trios, I would be very, very rich).

*My mom was disgusted by the implied incest, not the implied lesbianism.

I was trying to resist this kind of post, but I'm going to anyway.

People who are intolerant of homosexuals should be shot, thrown into a bucket of salt, shot again, then left in the desert...

I'm sorry you were treated that way, and the worker had no right to say something like that to you. Even if she thought that's what would happen, a nice 'only 1 person allowed in the changing room' would've been okay. NO way would a comment like that fly by me.

But, because of people like these, I usually have my boyfriend wait outside when we go to get something, mainly cuz asking for another male to share a fitting room is tantamount to attacking swans or something.

Seraphim, that is what disturbed me about it when it happened, and why we didn't try to correct her. I mean, what would be the point?Hell, her manager didn't even know which point to address first. Even if the ignoramus wasn't wrong about the type of relationship between me and my mom, her comment still would have been wrong. I would guess that her proudest achievement in life was that she managed to hit the "Fail" branch several times after she fell off the evolutionary tree.

That's funny, coz here in SA, girls go into the same (toilet and changing) cubicles together, and no-one raises an eyebrow. Mind you, if guys were to do it, then I think eyebrows would be raised.
Why is that?

I'd make the employee apologize to the both of you.

Then, fire the bitch, on the spot, in front of you and your mother.

Why is that?

Perhaps I'm a little biased ... but, guy-guy stuff is icky and girl-girl stuff should be filmed.

Seriously, tho, dressing rooms should be one-to-a-customer. Keep it simple, keep it fair. 'Cause you really don't want people going into the dressing rooms, regardless of gender/species combinations, and doing "things".

Sorry you had such a sucky experiance. But, honestly, rarely is a trip to wal-mart anything short of a pain in the tookus.

That sucks. I've been through something like that at a couple resturants. It seems everytime me and a friend go out for a girl's day we get mistakened for a lesbian couple. One waitress was practicly pushing us out of the table. I swear the woman was there every 5-8 minutes asking us if we wanted dessert. We thought about sharing just to weird the woman out, but ended up ordering separate desserts and taking our time eating them.

There, but don't spam me, I rarely check it.... also the only pictures I have on there after I grew my goatee are of me painted as a Zombie...

Also, all the pictures are like a year or two old at least, maybe more (shows you how much I update it). Also, only like 1/100th of my friends are actually on MySpace. You wanna see them go searching through Warren of www.MyLoveMyLustMyEverything.com. (Shameless plug) :D He's #8 on my friend's list.

I'm pretty sure it's the common rule around here. 1 person = 1 room. Period.

Ever since getting my hair shorn butch short for chemo I've had random people calling me a lezzie. Saturday night, movie theater, SatC, with tons of ladies dressed up in pretty little dresses tripping along on high heels, and me, getting the lesbian label loudly whispered all around me with my 1/4 inch hair missing chunks dressed in sweat pants, a tee and big old crocs. Wanna guess who was comfy all movie long and who wasn't?

I was in Vicky's one time . . .and yes I watched a woman open the door . . .her male friend join her . . . sound of unzip and pants drop . . . (so it doesn't matter what the combo of genders - only one to a room unless assistance is needed)

It was fun to very loudly announce that there was a minor in another dressing room that could hear them. (yup I can be mean like that)

As for being at Sex in the City . . .I have to say I enjoyed the 3 good looking males next to me (hello really good looking in my part of the world - I have the wrong toys for that sand box) there is a bit with a good looking male cleaning - I laughed when I heard all 3 go "yummy" at the same moment. (assumption confirmed)

Hmm- I would have said really loudly - "I am so glad they had the story line with Samantha dealing with people judging those going through chemo"

You should have turned around and yelled "I have cancer!!!"

Bet that would have shut them up.

I prefer to pity them, then express my tacit disapproval of their outdated views. Otherwise, how will they learn?

Personally, I don't care what you do, or who you do it with, as long as it don't confront me none.

Littering is bad, even in the desert. Please find and use a proper receptacle for the trash.

Yeah, I've had similar problems with my dad, although it was more funny than offensive. He looks younger than his 45 years, I look older than my 19. And we're very close, we tend to hold hands and call each other "honey" and "dear". (Mind you, I call everyone "dear", but it's hard to tell that if you only see me once...)

Anyways, so a few years back I needed a new matress, so my dad and I went shopping at a nearby store. (It wasn't any big brand store, just discounted furniture, mainly mattresses, which worked fine for me. ) We spent about an hour or so looking around, it only took so long 'cause my dad was also looking for something we could put my sister's TV and videos in.

We finally decided on a mattress I liked that wasn't too expensive, and we told the nice lady at the desk which one we'd take, and we had our van with us now if we could find some way to get it on there?

Somewhere in the conversation the lady mentioned that she hoped "you and your wife like your new mattress." We were both stunned for a moment because this hadn't happened before (although it's happened a few times since) and then tried to politely explain that he was my dad and not laugh at the poor woman. She was very embarrassed, but polite about it. Dad and I still like to tell the story.

I agree (and I'm a heterosexual female with gay and lesbian friends) . That was uncalled for and unprofessional of her to say something like that. What a bigoted ignoramus! :pissed:
