Tonight, I treated my friend to a meal at the "British pub" that's nearby (yes, it's in southern California, but it's the closest we get, and they have really awesome food). After a lovely meal of Scottish Bridie and Sticky Toffee Pudding, my friend introduced me to the glorious ambrosia that is ginger beer.
And now I'm reeeeeeally craving it, and it's 11:20, and I can't get to the store till tomorrow. Grrr. Not nice to foist a new addiction on the dangerously obsessive Joi....

I know BevMo! sometimes carries Souix City's giner beer. They also carry one by Reed's, but that one will burn the hair in your nose (or at least it'll feel that way) There's also one called Cock and Bull, I've never tried it, but a friend said it was okay. Hope that helps.

I'm having trouble finding one around here with flavor as well as bite, but I'm addicted the stuff, so I've been thinking about learning to make my own.

If you want a lovely cocktail, try a Dark and Stormy: Gosling's Black Seal rum with ginger beer. Yummy! One of my favorite cocktails.

Oooh, real ginger beer is yummy. But seriously, I haven't had a name brand soda pop in years. When I crave a soda (which does happen occasionally, even to me, the health food geek) I go buy a bottle of sparkling water and some fancy juice and mix them together. My favorite is pomegranate...

I just heard about those, and they sound fantastic (I like rum anyway). Have to try to find some Gosling's, don't think I've tried that one yet. I was able to find ginger beer at Trader Joe's, so yay for that.
Thanks!

Real, brewed ginger beer is good. Fake ginger beer (sugar water with some artificial ginger flavouring) is bad.

I've got Reed's here, which I like ok. It says it's brewed. I tried some at the pub yesterday that was, I think, a brand called JCS? It was absolutely lovely, but I think I'll have to go to the British grocer that supplies the pub to get that one.

I don't know about what brands are available where you are, the only one I drink is Bundaberg.
I believe Bundaberg ginger beer is not the same company as Bundaberg rum or Bundaberg sugar... the only thing they have in common is the town of the same name.

So Mean! I haven't had ginger beer in ages and now I want some.
Slightly OT but I once got carded for buying ginger beer because the cashier thought it had alcohol.

Jester, you rock. This Dark and Stormy is awesome, even though I think I made it too strong and probably with the wrong kind of ginger beer. Still very tasty. Thanks for the heads-up!
I have a friend who used to bartend, and it was always awesome to hang out with him, because he'd invent random drinks for us. Sooooo fun.
Of course, the best time was when he and his housemates got some Bacardi 151.
First guy takes a shot, and coughs explosively.
Second guy takes a shot, and his stomach begins to hurt.
Third guy takes a shot, and falls asleep 2 minutes later, and is out for the evening.
Joi takes a small sip, raises an eyebrow, and drinks the rest of the shot with no problems.
Joi gets major respect points from all present.

I actually got to meet the current Mr. Gosling a while back at a cocktail contest sponsored by Gosling's. Of the four cocktail creation contests* I have entered, that was the only one I did not place in....but boy was it fun. And Mr. Gosling was a really nice guy.
As for ginger beer, the one we use at The Bar for our Dark and Stormy is Barritt's. It seems to do the job nicely. Not sure which one they use at the Waterfront Bar....

In the U.S., there are only a few places where you can walk around in public with your adult beverages. I have heard Charleston, SC is one of them, but have not confirmed that, having never been there. I have heard that Las Vegas is another one, but although I was there, I saw no one doing that. I know from experience that you can do that in New Orleans, Savannah, GA, and right here in Key West.
*A fifth one is coming up next month, sponsored by Pyrat Rum (which happens to be my favorite rum ever). This will be their third in Key West, and in the first two, I placed 1st and 4th, respectively. I am very excited, and have my recipe all set. I am hoping to return to the winner's circle with it!

When I was poking about online, most of the recommendations I saw were for Barritt's, but I dunno where to get it in my area. But who knows, might be able to order it online. I LOVE the internet. :)

Hey, as long as you can find Gosling's Black Seal Rum and a relatively decent ginger beer, you are fine. Barritt's is good, but frankly, the rum is the more important of the two ingredients.
