Call from yesterday:

Me - that chick in I.T.
FD - flaming dumbass

FD: I'm having trouble uploading things to my site

Me - (performs WHOIS query) Actually, I see that you have a domain name only account with us, but that your hosting is with (other company). If you're having trouble uploading, you'll need to contact your hosting provider.

FD: Yes (other company), that's my hosting service, but I've traced the problem back to you guys. I'm only having trouble with the sites that I have with you.

Me - Okay, but we're only providing your domain name, which would not affect your ability to upload files to your webspace. You'll need to contact your hosting provider.

FD - So why am I only having trouble with the sites that I have with you then?

Me - I don't know, but your hosting provider provides the webspace that you upload to, so you would need to contact them about any problems with uploading files.

FD - I've already contacted them. The problem is with you guys because I'm only having trouble with the sites I have with you.

Me - Okay ma'am, do you understand the difference between web hosting and a domain name?

FD - Yes, I have hosting through (company) and a domain name through you.

Me - Okay, but do you know what hosting is?

FD - Yes, it's the service I use to put files on the web site

Me - And you said that the problem you're having is with uploading files to your web site, right?

FD - Yes

Me - So then you would need to contact your hosting provider, since they provide the service that allows you to upload files

FD - Would it be possible to transfer my domain name to someone else?

Me - Certainly. Your domain is unlocked & ready for transfer - you'd just need to call the other registrar.

FD - Good, because you guys don't even make it easy to contact tech support - the phone menu is too hard - and my sites are down and you don't want to take responsibility for it - <bitchmoanrantWAAAAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE>

Me - Okay ma'am, have a nice day.

Oy! Where is this logic coming from? She sounds like the type who bugs the hell out of her electric company if her cable gets cut off.

A lot of posters on this site have avatars of some pretty kitties!

Awwwwwwww!

CanadaGirl, what kind of cat is that? I see pictures of them on the web a lot and they're gorgeous. I have a thing for them, maine coon, and siamese. Who am I kidding? I love cats in general.

DGoddess' cat reminds me of my mother's cat Pixie - except that D's cat doesn't seem to posess Pixie's tendency for evil. There's just something about the little oreo kitties (http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2006/09/we_loves_us_som.html)though.

Heh, that'd be like me calling Comcast when I can't get on the internet because of a blackout. It won't turn on, it must be Comcast's fault!

I see we have another cat fancier on board.

The kitty in my avatar is one of my babies, Miss Monkey-Monk. As soon as I can, I'll be getting some pics of her new babies and posting them online.

We now return to the reguarly scheduled topic at hand.

That I can ALMOST understand for the VERY technologically impaired out there. Y'know, maybe it's the middle of the day and they don't notice the power is out. They only see a problem with the cable... and they're having a particularly oblivious day...

What blows my mind is when they call the store they bought the computer or tv from in the same situation, which happens disturbingly often.

And then there was this guy:

We had a pretty nasty thunderstorm a few weeks back. The day after I got a call from some guy who owned a computer from one of those custom-built computer shops. He had purchased some stuff from us the day before the thunderstorm, and now his computer wasn't working. He claimed our products were :censored: and wanted a refund for the products AND compensation for his nonfunctional system.

I talked to him for a few minutes (it was slow, and I wanted to avoid getting assigned busywork from bored managers), trying to figure things out. He told me nothing was even turning on. Had him check his surge protector--no power. Had him check the power outlet in the room--no power. Had him check the lights in the room--no power. Had him check the other rooms--fully functional. Had him check his breaker box--there's the problem. Lightning storm tripped a breaker for the room his computer was in. Everything worked fine once he flipped the switch. Not a word of thanks for all my trouble, of course.

The kicker: the products he was sure had damaged his computer were a wireless mouse and a pack of DVD-RW discs.
