Arrgh What is it with people and social security numbers!

I'm putitng this here since it has nothign to do with work, customers or anything retail. Just me buying a used motorcycle off of another member of the general public.

I recently bought a used bike that I needed to ix up, I knew I needed to fix it up when i got it no problem there.

Unfortunately here is where the problem is. The title and bike came from out of Ohio and the guy I bought it from is the guy who bought it from the person in another state. He hadn't put the bike into his name in Ohio but the title was already assigned on the back to him (brief rundown cliff notes style for those who may not know This applies to Ohio, kentucky, indiana, and North Carolina titles: A vehicle title has a front which tells who owns it details about the vehicle and if there is leins or restrictions. The back has spaces for you to place the person you are selling the vehicle's name and info on.)

So since the title had his name on the back in the buyers position he would have had to take the bike down to the BMV get the out of state inspection and place the title in his name before sellign it to me. He said he didnt have the time or means to transport the bike to the BMV (Which is required for out of state title transfers) so I said no problem I'd mail him some Power of attorney forms to let me take control of the bike and do the paperwork (all on my dime and time, I even sent him a self addressed stamped envelope) so that I could title the bike.

Unfortuantely he is one of those people who guards his social better than the govt guards fort knox. He said that he didnt put it on there and they can get by without it. No they can't! I've worked in the car business enough and dealt with cars on my own enough to know that if the state says you need to put something on one of their forms you need to put it there or they WILL not process the form and throw it back at you. So I have now got a bike I cannot title. Fortunately I only paid $50 bucks for it (It came some assembly required, very used) and I havent started doing anything to it that required me to spend money on it so i can sell it for parts and get that back but still its rather annoying to have someone act like that when I dealt with them in good faith and even did all the work and was goign to deal with any of the paperwork costs (out of state inspection fee, two title transfer fees including douible on the taxes) to get this done.

Sorry to rant like this but I just don't understand people like that.

Tell him to change the title himself then. In the meantime, the bike will be parked in a no parking zone, for which the legal owner will be billed for all parking fines. :D

Well sad to say that really wouldn't do much good as the technical legal owner of title is the guy in North Carolina not the one in ohio I bought it from. But it is a thought.

In South Dakota you can use either your SSN or your DL#.

I think the guy you are buying the cycle from can get into trouble for not getting the title registered in his name in the first place. How did he get current tags/license plates if he hadn't changed the title over and paid the sales tax?

Damn that reminds me, I haven't put the new plates on my jeep yet. I'm still driving on the expired tags from the previous owner.

Would applying for a lost title help?
For the Torino I'm restoring the previous owner had lost the title and it hadn't been licensened for 10 years. I applied for the lost title with a bill of sale from the previous owner and six weeks later I got my title.
A friend of mine had some luck buying a title on eBay.

Well I resolved the situation today through a bit of fortuitous serendipity. (in other words I got lucky:D )

An associate of mine is planning on building a racing go cart. All he needed was an engine. I had a 400cc engine that worked, he had cash. Boom we had a deal. I love it when a plan comes together!:D

Cia: He was working on restoring/rebuilding the bike only got sidetracked so the bike wasn never running in Ohio. So he never titled/tagged it. As for sales tax and all it's one of those under the table deals.

Tanasi: I asked the BMV about that but they said I'd have had to deal with the North Carolina BMV to do anything as thats where the bike came from and it wasn't worth it to me. I paid $50 bucks for the bike as a project to work on this winter with my oldest son but we can find another car or something to work on as there are plenty of junkers around. *shrug* oh well sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield.

Yes I like to restore cars. For myself I'm currently restoring a 1970 Ford Torino CJ. I'm not too far from being done. I have all the body work done, and it's gone for paint. In the mean time I'm rebuilding the engine and transmission. I've never put a super-charger on one before so this is going to be interesting.
A few years ago my oldest son (16 going on 32) and I restored a 88 Ranger 4WD (Kriegsvagon). We dropped the 2.3L and replaced it with a 302, changed the trany, xfer case, both front and rear ends. My youngest son (12) already has his first truck that we will be working on next,1976 Jeep Wagoneer (named Porter). Oldest daughter wasn't interested she just wanted to buy something, now youngest daughter has expessed an interest in Avanti's.
