As I have already said in previous threads, in the petrol station we have to authorise the pumps before customers can pump petrol. Sometimes, there will be a delay beyond our control. Today was such a time.

Basically, the entire world decided to come and buy petrol. (Clue: Money off petrol vouchers. Clearly invented by some malevolent being to torment petrol station workers. -.-) There was just two people in the shop at the time, due to one person being at lunch and the queue stretched out the doors. O_o

Cue rude woman. I was answering a query from a customer when I was shocked by a loud knocking on the window. I turned to see a woman gestulating and, red faced, bellowing "Turn on the :censored:ing pump!" I couldn't believe how rude she was; could she not see that the petrol station was stuffed full of customers? Besides, she'd left her car; we can't turn the pump on in those circumstances. So, I ignored her.

She banged again, this time shouting yet more cusses. I ignored her again; my collegue commented on how nasty this woman was, and so did several customers. In the end, rude woman seemed to grasp the fact that we weren't going to authorise the pump til she went back to her car, and did so. As soon as I could, seeing as I and my collegue were swamped, I authorised her petrol pump.

By the way, when she came in to pay, surprisingly she said nothing, just handed over her cash and left. O.o

Sheesh, the nerve of some people. I can't believe you made her wait like that. Seriously, couldn't you tell she was in a hurry  [/sarcasm]

I admire your ability not to 'forget' about her.

I worked at a gas station once for a week. Man or man do they get pissy when you aren't able to authorize the pump. I bet it's rare to see someone acting mannerly when in this situation.

I was tempted, believe me; however, I figured that doing so would not get rid of her which is what I wanted most. XD

I must say... having never been somewhere that allowed pump then pay, I am baffled by these people who expect a pump to start without having first prepaid for the petrol...

It's the policy round England; if I went over to America, I would be very baffled about having to pay first then pump. XD That would be like going to the till and paying for your shopping before you go round the store and get it.

I have to ask, how does England deal with the drive off problem? I know that's why we have to prepay because it is so common for people to fill up then just drive off without paying if they don't pay in advance.

Generally we don't. It's an absolute bugger with the crime figures I can tell you!

We have cameras situated outside; if the person doesn't come back, we hand the tapes to the police.

Threads like this make me glad I live in New Jersey (full service all the way, baby!)

For the record, I do know how to pump gas and have done it myself (in Connecticut, on my way back from a wedding in Rhode Island); I just used a credit card at the pump.
