I have a question....
First off are you closed for Martin Luther King Day and if you are have you had any racist remarks about it. I've had a few people smirk when they read my sign. My best friend of 22 years husband is racist. His father called up his kids school and protested MLK day.I won't even tell you what he said

I'm off and no racist remarks. My only complaint is from my VP who insists on us spending the day doing volunteer work.

I'll just consider all the work I've done for south Florida collie rescue, ABMC Malinois rescue, donating food to animal shelters enough so I can enjoy the day off.

I work on MLK day. All the same, these knotheads who protest the holiday irritate me.

Well, classes are canceled at my college and I haven't heard any complaints (but I don't expect college kids to complain about getting a day off).

If I was still working right now, I'd get off paid holiday. Don't think I'd hear any complaints from my co-workers. They are all pretty cool.

I have to work; my office doesn't have many days off.

I grew up in an area that didn't have a whole lot of respect for Dr. King's work, and it wasn't till I got to college that I actually read the entire "I Have A Dream" speech. I can't imagine protesting a holiday in honor of such a great American!

Nor can I, but there's still people out there with "old ideas" about race who feel threatened by what Dr. King wanted to achieve.

I grew up in NH, so for the most part, I knew it as Civil Rights Day rather than MLK Jr. Day. They changed it when I was still in school, and I remember the debates over it. A lot of people wanted to keep it as Civil Rights Day because they felt it honoured more of the people involved.

NH is an odd state. Fascinating, but odd.

We're open (wine store, day before inauguration, heavily black neighbourhood - yeah, we're open), but I don't work Mondays, so I'm going to try and get some things done around the house.

Classes here are cancelled - certainly no complaints! But we're hosting this conference, and we have conference activities on that day.

No. Just another normal day at the clearance swamp.

I also never used to get the day off from school until I started college.

School's off for me. They were thinking about having us go to school that day to make up the snow day we had some weeks ago, so they (Juniors,Sophmores,Freshmen) wouldn't have to make up the day at the end of the year. When a teacher told us this, some kids were saying "But I celebrate it!!"

The teacher looked at them and said "How so?"

"Uh...uhhhh...ummm...we go out to dinner?"

 Nice try.

I don't have to work that day. We are still open, I just don't have to work unless someone wants me to take their hours.

I work at a grocery store so we'll still be open. I'm not sure how it is now, but I didn't start getting off of school for the day until I moved from Oklahoma to Texas back in High School.

On a personal note, I have found Martin Luther King fascinating ever since I had to do a report on him way back in third grade. I hope his dream truly does come true.

It's just another day for us. No holiday pay or anything. Only time we even close is if it's Thanksgiving, Christmas and I think Easter. Since we had to teach ourselves how to run everything without a computer a few weeks ago (Computers all just DIED) we'll even stay open without power.

Dammit.

Well the security company I work for is contracted at this site for 24/7/365. The warehouse we work for will not be closed.

However I will have the day off, because I am using up all of my paid vacation starting tomorrow. I have 3 1/2 days that I have to use or lose by February. so I'm working half a shift tomorrow, then I'll have Sunday Monday, and Tuesday off. Then I'm regularly off Wednedsay and come back on Friday night to resume my normal schedule.

I work tonight, bartending on the roof deck. Just like I do EVERY Monday night. No difference, no bonus pay, just another Monday night at The Bar.

Personally I think "Civil Rights Day" would not only honor more people and the movement and the ideas behind it more, I think it would honor Dr. King more, as he fought not for recognition for himself but for equality of opportunity for all people, of all colors.

His fight, his dream, had not a damn thing to do with a paid state holiday, and frankly, I think he would have prefered a day honoring that dream, not him personally.

All that being said, no one had better say anything racist to me about it today, or they are going to get the Ultimate Verbal Bitch Slap. I am intolerant of intolerant racist fucktards.

No, we're not closed on MLK Day, but we do have a regular customer who is a skinhead.
I only realized it last night, when I saw the SS tattoo.
Surprisingly, he's never gone off on racist tirades or anything, but he has hit on one of our cashiers by buying her a cell phone and giving her his number.

She's already got a boyfriend, so...lol.

My school does not start the semester until Tuesday. My only real problem is keeping MW classes on a similar schedule at TTh classes.

25 years ago, if you were of a certain ancestry, then you had the option of taking off Juneteenth (June 19th) with pay. Now it's just a regular workday for everybody, but you get comp time (if you're not faculty or hourly) to go march in the parades.

When I worked at BBV I once had the reverse happen- someone said we were racist for being open instead of closed to honor the day.

I simply told them, "It certainly is not racist- the only color we're interested in is GREEN."

I'm off, though, of course, the hotel is still open. No racist comments so far, though my Black Co-worker keeps bitching about how they keep talking about how great it is to have a black dude as president. He's like "Dude, he's just another dude! Get over it!"

I like my co-worker.

Personally I think "Civil Rights Day" would not only honor more people and the movement and the ideas behind it more, I think it would honor Dr. King more, as he fought not for recognition for himself but for equality of opportunity for all people, of all colors.

Oh, that's an excellent idea! I'd get behind that. :)

I have to work. My roomie is a teacher so she is off. She took advantage and drove up to Boston to visit friends. Which means I get the place to myself :D
