View Full Version : How long would you stay?

I can't remember whether we've had this thread before.
Yesterday at work we were discussing the lottery and how long we would stay at our jobs if we ever won.
I would try to stay until the check cleared. But knowing myself, I say about 2 days. The first day I would curse out every single SC out, the second day I'd get fired.
Ahhhh....to dream.:p

IF I were to win above a million dollars I'd keep working but become part time. Can't shop all day & sit on your ass, right?
The moolah I'd get from working would become my "mad money"...lol.

I would keep working and just know that when I wanted to retire...I could and not have to go back to work like so many carriers have to do after a few years.

It depends on what job I was at when I won. If I'm at my part-time job still, then I'd be gone as soon as my win was confirmed, and I'd leave a letter behind detailing exactly what I thought of that job and my co-workers (no swears would be involved, but I wouldn't expect any of them to have much self-esteem by the time they finished reading it).
If I was at my other job, I wouldn't quit. It'd probably make the job more fun, knowing that I'm not doing it for the pay anymore, but because I honestly wanna be there.

I say I'd quit the same day, but I'd probably stay. There's something about the idea of knowing I could quit any time I wanted to that would make work fun.
Then again, as a friend of mine used to say, "Anybody who wins millions and says they'd keep working because they'd be bored just doesn't have any imagination."

I love my job, and I enjoy it, so I would stay. Bartending, that is. There is no way I would continue to wait tables for longer than it would take them to replace me. And I would burn the fucking apron so fast it would make heads spin.
That is my current job, of course, which I enjoy thoroughly.
Some of my other jobs I've had--hell no. If I were still working for Shit Weasel at the Landmark Luxury Hotel, not only would I quit in a heartbeat, I would give him several piece of my mind, probably in front of his boss, probably very pointedly. I am good at that kind of thing.
So I guess the answer is I would keep working at THIS job. Most of the ones I have had? Probably not.
I love bartending. I love doing magic (which I would pursue more if I won the lottery). Waiting tables? I'm great at it, but no, don't love it, could walk away from it in a heartbeat.

Long enough to say I quit, I can find lots of things to do if I had lots of money and it would free up a job for someone who needs the money.

Hubby says he would stay at his job. He works because he has to but he loves his job. He would be bored out of his mind if he wasn't working.
Me? I would continue to be a SAHM until all the kids were in school and then find a job or somewhere to volunteer doing something I enjoyed. If you like your job and find enjoyment in it, it's not as much a job anymore and you WANT to be there.
Though if I were still working in retail? I dunno. I'd see how much my attitude changed now that I wasn't having to worry about bills and such. Who knows. Maybe you would find you really like it? :p

Still in school...I would immediately start trying to get into a Study Abroad to Europe. I want to go, there's opportunities to go, but it's so expensive.
Honestly, I would retire my parents before I would retire myself.

I'd keep working. I work at hotels. It's what I want to do.
Though it would get me a bit closer to buying a hotel (I need at least 3 Million though).

If I won the lotto... I'd go into work, and be like "fuck you guys, I'm going home." Of course, I'd have to do that line in Cartman's voice :p Seriously though, I'd probably go into business for myself. Either buying into a hobby shop, or selling sports cars. Or, if it's enough...pay off the mortgage, buy a place at the beach, and live off the income. In other words I'd finally get to do what I *want* to do, rather than what I *have* to do. Throw in some traveling--Australia, Norway, England, and a few other places...

At my current job, I'd never come back after they announced the numbers.
I'd take the time off to find a new job (possibly parttime) but I'd never go back through the door.

I completely agree with you. I wouldn't quit working. I would keep working, but for myself, with no boss to answer to.

I'd work my notice at least (4 weeks).
I'd continue with my <First Aid Organisation> work, and I think I'd do a n other thing, but I wouldn't be in paid employ.

I would only continue to work if the numbers were announced and I was on shift. Getting someone to come in to fill in a night shift would be murder. Other than that, I'd be outa there.
I have this whole plan for when I win the lottery. I would never have to work for anybody but myself again, and if my descendants followed my lead, neither would they.

I would give them two weeks' notice; that's only fair.
I might stay on-call if anyone needed someone to cover for them, but other than that I would stay home and write all day. What bliss!

First of all.. I would call my family lawyer saying I need some assistance. Second of all I would call my friends up in PEI and say I need somewhere to stay for a few days.. and they would be greatly compensated (I would buy them a new van, which they need badlly). After everything calms down.. I'll claim the money

The instant I'd gotten that money in my grubby little paws I'd be GONE.
Jamaica, here I come!
Im not working at the moment, but at my last job I would have handed in my 4 weeks notice because I wouldnt want to leave my boss and coworker in the lurch.
The day I got the money I would hand it over to my accountant and say "make this outlast me please"
Then I would do what Ive always wanted to do, buy a theatre (live theatre not a cinema) and run that.

Id stay til I knew that money was a sure thing ( i would have to win AT LEAST 5 mil) THEN ID GET THE FUCK OUTTA THERE. Invest most, and play with the rest.
Id finish school (since I do graduate in May), but I wouldnt kill myself working like I do. Id also get a maid. :D
Id also like to travel the world. And I do mean the entire world. I have this burning desire to go to Istanbul, Turkey. lol.

I would give them my two weeks' notice. I would put the million in several bank accounts (so I'm insured) and let the interest work for me. Then, I could put myself through college now and later on, put some in a savings account for my sister to go to college.
Then, I would give my grandparents money and then fly my grandma to Vatican City to hopefully see the Pope. I would help my mom pay off her debts, get a place for the SO and I. Do some travelling, meet CS people (especially Plaidman.).
Once more interest builds up, I would invest some money with EQ to build her hotel.
I would work as either a barista or a bookstore employee just to have something to do.

I kinda like my job, but I don't like the people there as much as I liked my former coworkers.

i would keep working but-
i would pay off all my debt
i would purchase at least two propertys (in my area easy to do) so my mom could have a place to live and i could a smaller place to live,
i would put half of what was left into a savings a ccount to retire on and the rest would be used to keep me from going crazy.

Where I'm at right now? I'd probably stay for a while, but I'd definitely take a sabbatical or something to go traveling.
With my future job, I wouldn't quit. I enjoy too much to quit.

Depends on how much I won. I'd probably still work somewhere part-time, and do comic drawing the rest of the time. Save at least half of my winnings for the Future. Buy a house somewhere, and work to pay off most of my living expenses (food, at least).
...no, actually, I'd probably still work full-time. Save half for the Future, buy a house, and use the rest for investments and Rainy Days and new toys (like comics and movies and... um... toys!). I'm paranoid about money.

I would give about three months notice as we are a very small firm and I wouldn't want to leave them in the lurch.
That gives me time to settle my debts and see a few friends right then head off for a few months Reading on a beach somewhere. Then head up to Ontario to either Whitby or Port Parry to open an old fashioned Emglish Sweet Shop.

Well, at least for the moment this is all still conjecture for me, as the failure of my night continued. (See also Arizona Cardinals.) I checked an old lottery ticket I had in my wallet from December. Didn't match a SINGLE number.
Oh well. Guess I'm just gonna have to keep getting people drunk for a living.

I would stop doing what currently earns me the majority of my money, but there are other jobs I'd continue to do (I have a business license). I would sign up for an educational program in the field of work I really want to do, without having to worry about how I would pay for it, or what I would live on in the meantime. Once the program was completed, I'd go to work in my chosen field.

Wow, everyone is telling about their elaborate plans... Maybe I'll play too.
1. Pay off all bills (mortgage, credit cards, furniture)
2. Buy my Grandmother's house and help my sister fix it up, then sell it to her at a discount price, or move in myself.
3. Buy a nice sized property
4. Invest heavily
Since I'm young I'd keep working in some capacity (see previous post) but since I can't stand who I work for, I wouldn't stick around here.

My issue with this hypothetical future of mine, is that I want to abuse and give a piece of my mind to both the SC's and management. It could well be that they'd fire me after a couple of calls, and then I would open up on them
And I don't need a million to do that! $50K would allow me to easily do what I'm after (in the short term - pay off debts, etc - there's other jobs out there, and other companies.. which is why I'm on the hunt now).
As for what to do... easy - there's a stack of courses etc that I want to be doing, just not in this part of the world. UK and US, here I come!! After I've done them - teach!

Easy, I wouldn't change anything but getting my bills paid off, maybe move the shop to a different location (something with a walkin potential) and get some decent signage.
Otherwise though, I wouldn't stop working. I love what I do, and not having to answer to anyone is awsome.

I'm not currently working, but I won the big jackpot...about 4 mill would go into savings of some form so I could maintain a comfortable lifestyle. I wouldn't go into teaching like I'm currently planning, because I don't want to get sued and lose everything, and I'd just be a tempting target as a teacher. But I'd get my parents out of debt, go back to school for my PhD, and then spend the rest of my life writing.

I find it funny how many people respond to this as if they've won millions, and are set for life, and others who respond as if it's under the 100k mark so they have enough to help out without being able to retire, but almost no one covers each contingency. So to go back to mine, I'll break it down a bit:
Set for life $$$: I'd finish my schooling (this is my last year, after all), I'd get myself a nice place (nothing excessive), find a job I wanted, not needed, and just have fun. If I wanted to take a trip, I'd do it. If I wanted something, I'd get it. No need to weigh everything against a budget.
Assisting $: tell my weekend job to take a hike, and focus on my intern job to get as much experience out of it as possible, and put a down-payment on a decent place (certainly nothing as nice as the SFL $$$ place). Other than that, I don't think I'd change much. I'd try and save as big a chunk as I could as long as possible, as a hedge against my own tomfoolery.

If I won the lottery I probably would continue to work but not in the same place.
About 10 years ago one of the guys who worked in the mail room did win 3 Million and was never seen again. With some of the talk that went around after he left, I can understand why.
A surprising number of people who worked with him felt that he owed them some of that money. We're not talking about loans he hadn't repaid. These people actually thought that he should help them out with with debts they had.

That's about the only reason I'd consider leaving. I like working. It gives me a sense of purpose. It's been good to me.
Now, I don't gamble, so I won't really experience huge riches unexpectedly, so any money I will have will have come from working my arse off. Is anyone else going to see any of that money? Not unless I offer it without being asked.

After taxes and such, I would require at least a $10 million jackpot to even consider quitting my job. You have to be so careful with investments if you really want to just live on the interest. Also, I have two kids to help through college and grad school. I'd also want to help them a bit to get started.
If I did win $50 million or so, I'd probably still wait to quit until the first check showed up. Then I'd be out the door so fast CCTV would only see a blur.
I would want a home in the mountains. Not huge, but comfortable. A cleaning lady twice a week. All the books and movies I've ever wanted. A couple cool cars and a couple responsible vehicles. Spend months at a time traveling. And one of these:

People like this make me think that if I won the lottery, VERY few people would know, and even fewer would know how much.
Of course, I am such a ham and attention whore, who knows? I might hold a freakin' press conference.
Fact is, I don't know precisely what I WOULD do, but I would love to be put in the position to find out!

Bullshit. I have a 20 on the fact that you'd torch the building before you even cashed your first check. Or at the latest, right after you got back from the bank and the first check had cleared!

A surprising number of people who worked with him felt that he owed them some of that money.
This is exactly the reason why I would NOT stick around, regardless of where I worked, or how much I liked the job, unless I was self-employed.
I'd have too much going on with my first check (big payouts are divided up over 20 years unless you take it all at once and loose more than half of it with most lottery payouts) to give money to people I only know at work. My family comes first.

Hmmmm
If we're talking BIG BUCKS here (at least a couple million US $) then I would
a) quit my job
b) buy my own book/DVD/CD store, pay someone else to run it and work in it as a clerk
c) send my parents on a nice cruise
d) send TTO's parents on a nice cruise
If we're talking a couple hundred thou, then
a) Stay at my job
b) invest rather wisely
c) wait about 10 years, see what the amount is and dependant on that, do the few million thing :)

Well...I am now self employed, doing something I like. But I don't LOVE it, and if I didn't have this crazy need for money to survive, I could easily let it go.
At my last job, up until I got an evil boss and my coworker went insane, I would've cheerfully given them 4 weeks notice. Because it's damn hard to replace and train people there, and I wouldn't have wanted to screw my coworker. Towards the end...I would've been done the second I found out the ticket was a winner.
I would go to college and get a medieval studies degree (something I want to do now but can't justify the expense)...and probably spend the rest of my time volunteering and playing WoW.
There are also a few friends I would help out financially...my family can pretty much go fuck itself after the recent treatment I've been given. (It seems that they only gave a shit because I made good money at my last job and helped them out when I could - as soon as I lost the job, they suddenly got a lot colder and ruder towards me :()
