So today I ended up getting 2 male rats (I think they're hooded rats, or at least that's the markings they have on them) I got them on adoption (they'd previously been owned and then given away for whatever reason) One's black from the front legs up with a thick black uneven stripe down the middle, the other one is similar but grey/brown instead of black.
They're currently duking it out to see who is the boss
I'm guessing they are 6 months old or slightly more/less they measure about (according to my reckoning) 6-8 inches minus the tail.
I'll get pics as soon as I can.

Spiffy. I rather like rats, but I just could never keep one as a pet.

Oh I'm jealous! I was going to get a couple rats after Sir left for job corps, but the kittens were going to go to the pound :( I may eventually get some rats after the kittens settle down, and when I have some where to put them :)
Conga-Rats! I can't wait to see them :)

You're plants would probably eat it.
One of my RAs in college had a pet rat in her dorm room. Her name was Rosie and she adopted her from the Psych lab after they were done with their experiment. She was so sweet.

:D
Actually it's my snake I'd worry about. I have a ball python, and yes rats are what he eats. (My apologies to rat lovers, but that's nature for you. I have to feed him something, and snakes are obligate carnivores.) Which is part of why I couldn't have them, I just couldn't fall in love with a pet rat and then feed other rats to a snake, it would be too weird.

I know, I was going to mention the snake but the thought of the plants eating a rat was more fun :p

Well, if it were a small rat, and a really big nepenthes, they actually could! There have been a few documented cases, actually.

I might wait until they've grown used to me to take pictures of them that way it's better than trying to take a pic with them in a corner of their tank.
Don't worry sprak, I'm a rat lover yet I do understand about you feeding your snake rats.
In the mean time, here's a picture of my old rat to fillthe daily cuteness quota :D

Dawwwwwwww RAT! -grabby hands- and I know how you feel Spark. I don't think I could have a rat and a snake at the same time..... At least not in the same room or on the same floor. I wouldn't want my pet rat hearing his cousins screaming, and my old snake used to make them shreik somethimg awful.. They actually woke me up one night!

Sadly my old rat died a few months back.
I now know for sure that the black and white one loves cherry tomatoes :D
They both do actually :D
They're both now snoozing, I don't blame them in this heat.
Rats are also unbelievably cute when eating, their hands are so human like you'd think I'm joking.

Cute rattie face! I used to have rats so I know exactly what you mean about their clever little hands.

the black and white one if super friendly/curious, I opened the top of the tank partially and rested my arm against it while I was wtaching tv (my couch is next to the tank) and the little fellow climbed up on my arm, jumped onto the couch arm and then scurried under my dressing gown (I'd done it on purpose so he could get a chance to check me out if he wanted)
