View Full Version : Two Exits

Situation: You have a gas station on the corner of the intersection of streets A & B. Said gas station has exits onto both streets a reasonable distance from the intersection. Street A is very busy during rush hour, usually backed up from stoplight to stoplight. At the same time, Street B has very light traffic. You want to travel on Street A.
Do you:
A) Leave via the Street B exit so you can avoid traffic and make the turn at the intersection? (go to page 42!)
B) Go to the exit on Street A where you will have to horn in on traffic, or pray that someone will take pity on you and slow enough for you to leave, interrupting the flow of traffic either way? (go to hell!)
Inspired by the boob who pulled a turn & burn right in front of me yesterday.

And the corollary to this. You see someone who is trying to leave their place of business. The light ahead of you is red. Do you:
A) Stop so that they can get through and thus make their day.
B) Pull ahead so that they can not get through all the while looking at them so that they know you saw them. But your time is precious...I mean golly that 0.1 seconds you saved by moving the car length forward will help....

Corollary #2 of Geek King's exit theory:
When entering said gas station, do you:
A) Use the entrance that allows you to make a right hand turn.
B) Use the entrance that requires a left hand turn. Which you can not do as you are blocked by traffic waiting to turn left at the intersection, who can not turn as well as they are blocked by the traffic behind you.

And the corollary to this. You see someone who is trying to leave their place of business. The light ahead of you is red. Do you:
Which, I would point out, would not be an issue if they would take the other exit onto the light-traffic road during rush hour. I'll often let them in, myself, but I can't make myself feel sorry for them when the other way out is always viable, and usually a better alternative since you can't turn left onto the busy road there anyway. A lot of times, they will be trying to get to the left turn lane (into Sam's Club) which causes them to block two lanes until they can get into the turn lane, where as they could go out the other exit and just go straight through the light. The fastest way to get past the mountain is not through it, after all.
It just bugs me because I see it almost every day on my drive home. A 30' drive would save so much aggrevation there if people would just look at the options.

My corollary was referring to my other office, not your situation. It empties out onto a busy street where the light is about 3 stores down. Between about 3:00-6:00 that light gets backed up past that entrance. Traffic coming from other side is usually not too bad. About 80% of the people will stop so that you can get out. About 95% of the people that don't stop just seem oblivious. but there's that 5% that look at you maliciously....
