View Full Version : What's your dirty 'unwind' secret?

After the last few weeks, I'm just emotionally drained. I've been crying a lot and the stress hasn't been able to let me REST (even though I sleep up to 20 hours on my days off! Yikes, totally unhealthy!). Work sucks. Life sucks. I feel inspired to write but when I hit the computer my mind wonders and I end up watching youtube videos.

I don't drink. I don't smoke. Gods know that even if I had friends who could help me score me some magic oregano i'd be too fucking paranoid to take a hit.. Lately, I've gone out of my way to be a good human being and attempted to let my vices lay undisturbed...

Until last night.

I ended up with one caller that got me SO PISSED that I was literally shaking for a good hour and a half after I had finally clocked out of work.

I said 'fuck being a good girl, I'm spoiling myself today'.

...

So I bought me myself a pack of capris (Menthol 120s, sweet release!) and today I said 'fuck it again' and bought myself an eight pack of Guinness.

Nothing relaxes me more than a good cigarette and an ice cold fucking beer.

For the first time in weeks I haven't shed a tear, felt like screaming or just... felt.. like exploding in any way.

And what makes it even better?

The Big Lebowsky.

PS: I won't be smoking again like I once used to and I won't be drinking like a fish either. Its like my 'I shall do this before my gasket finally craps out for good' catharsis.

Well, you know, we all gots our vices. Nothing wrong with that.

I used to get hammered every Friday night, but then, that was when I was working at Kinko's, so, you know.

I had to cut way back on my drinking. Gives me headaches anymore. Which sucks, because I dearly love booze. Particularly tequila. That was my "unwind." Good tequila, lime and salt.

Getting liquored up with my girlfriends and floating around my friend's pool on an air mattress is probably my favorite way to unwind. That's our "liquid lunch."

My mantra while doing that is "I need to send thosh fuckersh a thank you card for laying me off!"

Magic oregano...I like that. May I use this phrase?

As for my unwind vice, I guess a cigarette once in a while does it for me or get my friend Tattoo to get me some booze and have a drink or two.

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with having that one vice. We are all human.

Popping in the most brutal video game I have, throw on some invincible cheat codes and imagine my enemies are the people that piss me off.

(why the codes? Hey, they get to verbally beat on me with no recourse, I should be able to physically beat on them in the same situation:devil:)

Magic oregano and magic water usually work for me. Or, in desperate cases when I can't even wait till I'm home to unwind, I'll buy a cigarette from pretty much any of my CWs whose next break is at the same time as mine. I used to smoke these, but I've officially quit (tossed a near-full pack in the garbage for no specific reason) a while back.

Sure Sheldonrs, it's just to "unwind."

AnqeiicDemise - pretty much like you. Quiet spot, couple of smokes, couple of beers, a book, I'm good. Haven't really missed the oregano in twenty some years.

I unwind mostly by watching the most over the top film i can get (Postal, Grindhouse, Feast etc etc) failing that i'll pop in postal 2 and play it, nothing like electrocuting a virtual character, watching them wet themselves, chopping off their heads, relieving yourself on it an dkicking it down the road before blasting what's left of the body with a cat silenced shotgun to relieve stress

I found an interesting way to relieve tension.

I downloaded a game (free! It's free! It really is!) called "Trilby: The Art of Theft". It's a 2-D game where you play a cat burglar who goes into and out of various buildings, stealing items and looking for information without triggering an alarm or being seen by a guard. It really gets the adrenaline going, and works out a lot of aggression.

Come to think of it, I think I'll go play it now!

You ought to try the rest of the games by Yahtzee, http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm is his site

T-hee, sure, feel free to use the term 'magic oregano'. I labeled it as such when I sprinkled it on top of pizza and consumed it like I would have if it were dried oregano.

I was gone for a week.

Ah, the good ol' teenage years of yore.

shel: if I had been a little more outgoing as a teenager/young adult and weren't married, I would have fun playing the field too. In fact, I turned to my vices because my hub's wasn't in the mood for some satin-sheet rasslin'

My 'unwind' is playing cards (Magic: The Gathering) with good friends, a case of beer and loud music, every Wednesday. Been keeping me even for the last 10 years.

Some days, however... I just need a little violence, so I sit down with a few beers and watch my most violent pro-wrestling shows. Tables, chairs, ladders, barbed wire, fire, light tubes, power drills, pirahnas, scorpions, blood, blood and more blood...

Mine is knitting. Or a good, spicy Bloody Mary, or a nice cold beer, or a glass of well-chilled Chardonnay. Not all at once, obviously.

I have been known, however, to take part in what is known as a "purl n' hurl" session - a night of simultaneous drinking and knitting. I don't particularly recommend it if you're prone to knocking over drinks when inebriated. Not that I ever do that. *shifty eyes* :D

It's also not particularly recommended if you're working on any sort of complex stitch patterns that require keeping track of anything, such as rows or stitch counts. Not that I speak from experience on that, either.

granted I dont drink one or two beers a day... I wait tll saturday and drink ALL the beers:lol:

Everyone needs to relax in their own ways.

If i didn't drink (with friends etc.) on my days off. and bitch about shitty customers/coworkers etc. I'd go CRAZY.. (well crazier but that's a topic for another thread).

So I'm the only one who turns to sex with multiple strangers to unwind?

I once slept with 3 people from Craigslist's M4M section in 12 hours, so no... you're not. (also that's a dirty dark secret) I did feel pretty dirty for awhile afterwards...

My normal unwind when I'm really stressed is a 12 pack of beer. If I have it, weed helps immensely. I gave up tobacco years ago though. Even though weed is a lot cheaper than beer ($50 of weed lasts me 5 or 6 weeks), it's a pain to drive 30 miles each way to get it. Haven't smoked in over 2 weeks now. :( Last time I smoked was actually when a 17 year old coworker (bagger) showed up at my birthday party in mid August with some damn good weed.. that was awkard. But fun.

Teysa

I think I need to find a good tension reliever. I'm half tempted to try smoking, but the one time I tried a cigarette, I thought it tasted nasty and saw no point in spending my money on something that bad. If I did try a cigarette again it would just be out of pure boredom which is a silly reason to smoke. One thing I used to do on occasion was take the bus downtown, hang out at B&N, and maybe go to UNOs for a pizza and something alcoholic of some sort. Sometimes, I'd even go see a movie. That was back when I had a bit more money though. Now, I'd just feel guilty about spending money on frivolous stuff.

Used to be I'd take a few Dilaudid or Percocet or Vicodin or all three and some sleeping pills and wait until I hallucinated. Then I'd know I'd be painless and carefree for a while.

Alcohol tends to taste awful IMO, so I can't handle it because of the taste alone. I have found a few that aren't bad though. Usually, I would jump my boyfriend/girlfriend. Now that I'm single (thankfully so) AND antisocial I don't have much in the way of unwinding- my passions (art, writing) just make me mroe stressed out usually. I'm burnt out : < So I'm on a quest to find a way to unwind.

And one thing I wanted to say: Don't feel guilty spending money once in a while on something 'frivolous' that will relax you! Mental health is just as important as physical- trust me, I know.

I love a good glass of wine now and then, vodka or a beer. My problem? I must be allergic to alcohol or it exasperates my allergies. I look like Rudolf after a drink. It doesn't happen all the time, though. I think it's based on the time I take my allergy meds.
I would love to be able to get a little buzz after a hard day.

I am an ex-smoker. I can't go back. My husband would be devastated if I did. Truth be told? I miss it.

So, I immense myself in reality TV, scream my "angry" songs (think "Break Something" by Limp Bizkit) or get my husband to have some rocking sex with me.

With me it depends sometimes just sittin around and pickin bluegrass with my brothers and passing the mason jar back and forth is good enough. If I'm feelin bloody I'll play a particularly violent video game. Feelin really bloody (not often) I get a belt and me and MaDuce will have some fun. Dirty unwind secrets... lemme see...

1) Really good ice cream. Seriously, it can mellow me out so fast. My current favourites are Ben & Jerry's Tortoise Soup and Haagen-Dazs Caramel Cone Explosion.

2) Japanese porn comics. Yaoi is my miracle drug.

I'm depressed by how many people drug it up to unwind. I'm sorry to sound like an after-school special, but that's not cool. :(

I unwind by getting a massage, doing my nails, basically girling it up. I'm a Tom Boy so it's a practice that's very unlike me. If I can't get my girling up done, I hit up the gym for another run. I usually feel better after an hour.

JoitheArtist

extravagant baths. :D Bubbles, bath bombs, fancy soaps, scented oils, candles, the whole shebang. Sometimes I'll even put on my headphones and listen to a really wonderful recording of Eliot's "Four Quartets" (my favorite poem) during the bath--takes at least an hour.

I'll usually take a couple of bubble baths per week, just to help me unwind in the evenings, but I only go all-out every other month or so.

If I simply cannot physically relax any other way, and am over-exhausted, I will make a really strong hot chocolate with rum in order to get some sleep. I don't really like doing that, though, as I don't like using alcohol as medicine. Much better to use it as entertainment!

When I've been in a particularly fowl mood. Al will either drag me away from the rest (Cos I get rather cold and brutal - Not nice when your using swords) of the group and make me spill the story, or he'll hand me the re-cycled shinai (we break them, and re-taped the shortened ones) and let me wail on him (And only him, the smart ass ) until I burn off the angrynessness. My biggest vice is sleep. Most of the time I'm so tired that there's nothing that looks better than my bed and a soft pillow. I can sleep 14 hours no sweat when there's nowhere I need to be.

Baths can be nice too.. bubbles and hot water and a long book. I can stay in the bathroom for 2 hours or so before I'm ready to get out and do something productive.

Hearing an entire Billy Joel album start to finish. Turnstiles or 52nd Street work the best; The Stranger is pretty good too. I love putting an album on and grabbing a cup of hot tea, and finding something fairly mindless to do in the meantime, like sketch or do easy chores.

Haven't really touched the magic oregano since I was 15ish, but sometimes I feel like it'd be a good idea to give it another chance to work its oregano magic.

I should go try some of that sleep soon.

Beer. Beer. And more beer. And then....some beer.

It's so dad. And perhaps a reflection on my age and deteriorating mental state. But I don't remember this thread. I so didn't remember it, that I was reading through it thinking of comments to make. And saw this one, and was ready to virtually high-five the author....and then realized that *I* had been the author.

So sad. So very, very sad.

Anyway, I should probably mention some other things I do to unwind. Often after work I'll sit down by the Mega Touch video game, aka "video crack," and play a bunch of games as I enjoy a few cold ones. My latest unwind technique is another form of video crack, an obnoxiously cute game I downloaded last week called "Airport Mania." It is just very soothing to me for some reason. Anyone who's played it should understand.

I do enjoy losing myself in a good book, though I have not done much reading in recent months....and to be fair, my version of what a "good book" is is somewhat different from most people's. After all, I enjoy reading a lot of non-fiction, including (but not limited to) books on serial killers.

Again, not something I have done much of lately, but I do love getting out on my bicycle and just spinning my wheels, literally and figuratively, and getting any frustrations I have out on the road and the bike.

And then there's sports. I love watching football, basketball, and all kinds of other sports, especially when one of my teams or my college is playing. Of course, some people might say that this gets me more tense than unwound, but getting out a lot of aggression while watching these, through vociferous cheering (translation: shouting my fool lungs out at the tv screen) certainly helps me relax. Especially when my team wins!

I don't drink. I don't smoke. Gods know that even if I had friends who could help me score me some magic oregano i'd be too fucking paranoid to take a hit.. Lately, I've gone out of my way to be a good human being and attempted to let my vices lay undisturbed...

Perhaps it is time to disturb your vices and have some freakin' fun. Sounds kind of like you are a bit wound up, and stressing too much about being a "good human being." Sometimes it's not only fun to be bad, it's downright healthy!

Magic oregano...I like that. May I use this phrase?

I hate to rain on anyone's phrase parade, but that is hardly a new one. I remember hearing that as far back as high school or so. And I graduated back in the dark ages of 1988.

So I'm the only one who turns to sex with multiple strangers to unwind?

I would, if I could get more cooperation. :rimshot:

For me... Softball.

(Yes, I know, an Irishman, in Ireland, who plays softball. Damn someone introducing me to it)

There is no better tonic then going out into a field on a Monday evening and using a great big metal bat to pound a ball back at the team who just threw it at you... (Well, not directly at. I tend to aim for gaps, or hit it the opposite way... Leftys FTW)

And as I like to say... Softball players have bigger balls. Even the girls.
