View Full Version : It's not even winter, and I'm sick of it already...

Yup, the oblogitory I hate snow thread time again.

This time, we got through November with little snow (barely 3 centemeters at a time, and the temp well above the average. Guess what? We pay for it now.

Yesterday morning, the snow started to come down, and hadn't stopped until mid afternoon today. The official recordings? About 30 centimeters (1 foot). The amount I had to shovel? Drifts ranging from 10 inches to 3 feet (no, I am not exaggerating)

So it's official. Winter is not her officially for 16 days yet, and I'm already sick of it.

(Though I had a laugh from the news tonight, where a place in Texas got 3 centimeters of the white stuff and shut down the city. I so want to send them a picture of what I had to deal with and a note attached to it. On the note is two words: YA WUSSES!)

Yeah, I can't wait until monday when I have to slog through it to get to work. Luckily I've changed my route so most of my downtown walk is on Jasper. That'll help.

Yeah, I left the house in the rain, turned to sleet on my way to where I was going, and drove home in a snow storm. Blah.

We got snow this morning too. I am guessing that the stores are now out of "White stuff"; bread, milk & TP. Can't say for sure, but I don't go near the stores when they predict snow. It is a nut house. Oh... and there was no accumulation.

If it had come in a day earlier, they would have cancelled school Friday.

I laugh at it, then remind myself, I grew up in northern Illinois. My high school has more snow removal equipment than the City of Atlanta.

On the other hand, I am glad that I do not live in a place like Buffalo or other points north.

Enjoy your snow!

The forecast for Monday night into Tuesday is 3 to 5 inches of snow (2-4 west of us, but we get more since we're on the lake).

Plus more snow possible Wednesday--store manager was talking 4 to 8 inches there.

I think I hear Frosty dropping trou.:runaway::cry:

Broom, you have to know that one of the great things about living in a place like where I live is that you get to mock the people who live where it's cold. And by now anyone who has been on this site for more than 18 seconds has to know that I am going to do just that every time someone complains about the cold where they live and where I don't.

To be fair, it was a bit nippy when I just strolled over to the complex office to drop off the rent....in my sandals, pajama pants, and sleeveless shirt. Must've been down into the low seventies.

Wow! Just checked the temp online, and it is actually down to 63! Good thing that the complex office is so close, and that walk was so short! Could have been scary otherwise!

I have a love/hatre relationship with snow/winter.

I love the look of snow covered trees, I love wearing winter clothes, I love hiking in the snow. I love the excuse to stay in and just drink cocoa.

I hate my S.A.D, I hate driving in snow, I hate other people who cannot drive in snow.

I'm trying to work more on the love of winter, and was really irked we only got a dusting from this "storm," esp after all the hype. (Its CT, its Dec, it will snow, get over it)

Broom, you have to know that one of the great things about living in a place like where I live is that you get to mock the people who live where it's cold.

Like I said, just as this thread is like clockwork, your mocking of us in the colder climes is too, and so is my requirement to hate you with enough fury to warm me all winter. :p So really, you're doing me a favour.

ETA: It's -28C right now. That's -18F for the conversion impaired. Good thing there's no wind, or this could be scary.

EETA: :rotflmao: I'm stuck at home today for what could be the stupidest reason ever. It's not that I'm snowed in. It's not that I can't open my door. It's that I can't lock my door. The cold's twisted the frame, or warped the door, or SOMETHING. But the deadbolt doesn't line up with the slot in the door frame. I'd called the landlord about it on Friday, so at least maintenance is already coming today, so I won't have to miss any more days of work, but yes. The stupidest excuse ever. "I can't come in because the cold won't let me lock my door."

I'm tired of winter. Can we skip ahead to summer now?

Seriously, Kentucky winters suck. Not because we typically get huge amounts of snow or the deep-freeze temps, but because the city I live in has no capacity to deal with the aforementioned when they do happen. Today we had a dusting of snow fall overnight mixed with some rain and sleet. The interstates were at a standstill because of multiple wrecks. Thankfully, 65N was clear, but still. People around here can't drive in snowflakes.

Granted, we usually end up with more ice than snow. Back in January we got hit with a major ice storm that shut the city down for several weeks. That was fun.

And it's supposed to last from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday night!

It's not set to snow until noon tomorrow, so I'm going to pack up and do my errands, then spend the next two days at my parents' house so I don't have to attempt to drive 15 miles to work in this slop.

I hope you have a safe and short drive, Irv.

I finally decided to quit being stubborn and take my parents up on their offer to stay at their place when big storms are forecasted, since they are just a few miles down the road from work, and I'd only have to conquer one really bad intersection.

I have to do 12 hour shifts both Tues and Weds, and considering how heavy traffic is between 6-7 pm and how bad the roads will be, it'd be just a nightmare to even attempt from where I live.

Edit to add: I wonder if the employees in my new department are as bad about calling in during snow as my old ones were. It was always without fail, people who lived right in town would call in sick, but people who lived out in the sticks always made it to work....albeit sometimes late and not always in one piece, but they made it.

I'm already tired of winter too. I had to scrape ice off my windows with my driver's license! No one around here owns ice scrapers. I live in Florida for a reason.

Stay warm, my northern friends! My parentals are from up north and they are always talking about the snow and how they don't miss it.

Good thing about cooler weather--drives sales for the warmth shop so we won't have a lot of markdowns to do in coats, winterwear, and blankets and so forth. Anytime it dips below 40, people pile into the store like there is a winterstorm outside and they MUST have heavy winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves.

Um, while I live in Hurricane Alley, I do NOT worry when hurricane season starts. In my ten years here, I have never evacuated for a storm, and I have missed only one hurricane in all that time, and that was because I was on a pre-planned vacation in California during Hurricane Ike last year.

Me? Worry? Please.

You really want your brain broken? Your freezer is warmer than it is outdoors. During winter in Canada, it's common for people to chill things by sticking them on their back step. I know people who keep old broken fridges in the back yard for free extra "cold storage."

Actually, that didn't phase me at all, since I already knew that. Hell, I have often told my tourist customers when they comment on the temperature back home, "Hell, my freezer doesn't get that cold!"

And I also knew that many people keep stuff outside this time of year if they run out of freezer space. I have some friends who have been known to keep their beer outside in their yard, or in a snowbank....frees up room in their fridge, after all, and gets their beers icy cold! And the beer drinker in me does appreciate that!

Yeah, my university is the same way. They won't close campus, but they also won't make sure the sidewalks and stairs are properly salted. Considering that my university is pretty hilly, it's a huge problem. According to one of my friends, one year a set concrete stairs up the hill was so icy students were literally crawling on hands and knees to get up.

No no, Cat said there's something to be said about the cold, not against it.

Point of order, Your Honor. But I submit the simple fact that, by speaking against something, one is by definition speaking about it.

Seeing as I don't haven anyone to snuggle with....can't say much good about the cold.

There are some things one can enjoy about a cold winter beyond just the snuggle factor.

"Whoa! Wait minute! Did Jester just say something positive about cold weather? Is he going to actually say that there are good things about it?"

Yes, yes I did. Yes, yes I am. Shocking, I know. But far be it from me to be predictable.

So, here we go...Mr. Anti-Winter's List of Good Things in Winter:

--Snowball fights.
--Sledding.
--The adult versions of sledding, i.e., snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, etc. I have never done any of these, but they look like an utter blast.
--Ice-skating. Believe it or not, I love ice-skating. I have never done it outside, only in a rink, but it really is fun....as long as I dress warmly enough.
--Soups, stews, chilis, and other warm comfort food. There were times when I was a youngster that my family lived in actual cold areas. And one of the greatest experiences of that, and one of my fondest memories, was coming home from school or work, and walking into my house to smell something awesome cooking. Now, my mom was working, but she had this awesome thing called a Crock Pot. She was cooking while she was out at work! And even better than the smell was, while I was shaking off that horrible cold that I had just come in from, lifting the lid of the Crock Pot and getting the full smell of the deliciousness brewing there in smack me in the face, along with a cloud of steam that helped thaw my face and warm my bones, not to mention my soul.
--Building snowmen and snow forts. I know without question that if I lived in a cold place, even as an adult I would be partaking in these activies.
--Breaking icicles off of buildings, for precisely no reason but you could. Great way to be destructive and break stuff without getting in trouble for it!
--Writing your name in the snow without using your hands. (This one of course is for the guys--or the really, really talented girls out there!)
--Great weather for certain drinks, including mulled cider, rum, mulled cider with rum, egg nog, Guinness, other dark beers (Sam Adams Black Lager, anyone?), red wine, and hot chocolate. There was a time in that cold place where I was working on a major research paper for school. And to get there and back, I had to take the bus, since my parents were working. And while I hated waiting for the bus on my way home, I loved getting a hot chocolate from a local business by the library and sipping on it while waiting for said bus.
--Hot food is so much better. When heading to work pre-driver's license, I did the same thing as with the hot chocolate, but I did it with fresh hot bagels and pizza bagels....I would buy them and then wait for the bus, with the warm box inside my coat, warming me...then ate it on the bus, warming myself up further. Did the same thing with zeppoles (Italian donuts) when coming home from the mall. Mmmm....zeppoles.

There ya go. Out of character, the positives about winter from a guy on a tropical island. So yes, Virginia, there are good things to say about the cold.

That being said, I prefer to say those things from a very warm place!

AdminAssistant
12-09-2009, 05:19 AM
I will agree with you about hot food and certain alcoholic beverages. But sledding, snowball fights, etc actually involves going outside in all that nastiness, and I'd just rather not. Now, when I was back in AR, and we would get one snow a year, which would always result in a snow day, then yeah, it was fun. But here it's just snow and ice, snow and ice, NEVER a snow day, salty slush all over shoes, pants, and car. Really cold, plust that nice sharp wind to remind you, "Hey, this IS Kansas!"

It's really not fun. Not even remotely. All I can think when I look outside is spending 5 minutes getting my car cleaned off before inching to school, then walking up the hill and down the hill and up the hill and down the hill.

Bah. Humbug!

Jester
12-09-2009, 05:27 AM
Oh, I'll agree that the cold sucks (hello? It's ME!), and that that biting wind blows (pun intended), and that while snow can be fun, slush is lame, and black slush is nasty. And driving in that shit really sucks.

Hey, I was just pointing out some good things about the cold weather. In the end, though, you may notice I still make a point of living in a place where I don't have to deal with it at all!

This winter is going to piss me off. Not because of the snow, but because of an ankle injury I sustained 7 months ago!

It was so severe, I've had 2 surgeries on it. I have my doctors debating on a 3rd surgery I don't want. Tomorrow I have to visit a spinal cord injury specialist because of something my physical therapist and his department head noticed in me. (My regular therapist and then he got concerned and called the department head.)

What this boils down to... I won't be able to snowboard at all this winter. I already sat out golf, I was told yesterday to "sit this season out." So right now, my heart is a bit broken.

And we're in the midst of one of the biggest snow-storms in years. It started yesterday. The same day I was told to sit this season out. Pisses me off.

Re: the railways and their employees... they have employees on duty 24/7. Mostly in revenue service during the day, mostly on engineering during the night. Either set would be able to run a Dv12 or two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bCaUCjuzi4) with a plough attached if required, and the point-heaters are always in operation in winter.

Well, I'm spotting some bad weather next week, during my finals. My last exam is on Thursday at 5 pm and my grandpa won't be able to pick me up until the next day. Of course, bad weather predicted for that Friday. I have to talk to the Mathematics Department Head about moving my final up to Tuesday, for safety's sake.

I really hate winter.

Yeah, I work there, we have shifts that run 24/7 but the people to run the machines still have to be able to get in to work and with the storm we got on Friday, over half the people couldn't get there, we still have a couple that can't, there roads still haven't been unburied, city has more important priorites. We've managed to get the yard cleaned up and running at full capacity again though. Point heaters also have to be installed to work, small yard, they're not in the budget.

Due to the snowy weather and bad roads earlier this week, the DC cancelled our truck for yesterday and sent it tonight instead.

It's close to 1900 cartons.

And we're short a person, because our manager had to adjust schedules and try to cobble together enough people to unload the truck tonight, and she needed somebody who otherwise would've worked with us tomorrow morning.

And it's the biggest one-day sale of the year tomorrow, with doorbusters and giveaways for people who spend more than $50. We're expected to do over $100,000 in sales, and I think we will, seeing as how it's supposed to be warmer tomorrow than it has been the past couple of days.

Ugh. FML. The head of the Math Dept said no to my request because she says "snow showers aren't that bad."

Eff you.

To anyone else who wants to complain about how cold it is where they are:

To summarize, on Dec. 13, overnight, Edmonton was the second-coldest inhabited place on the planet, reaching -46.1C, -58C including the windchill factor. New record low for the month of December. We win!

Though it feels a lot like losing...

I felt really bad for the people in Sherwood park last night. 12 hours without power in a record breaking low temperature.:(

We never did get snow in Pittsburgh. All of the "end of the world" crap on the media...and all we got was rain. In fact, it's about 40 degrees F outside right now!

It's so cold my boogers froze this morning.

Ugh, the most wonderful time of the year when every noise is magnified, my locks are frozen shut, and my tear drops and boogers freeze upon walking outdoors.

Today is supposed to hit somewhere around -45 Celsius (-50 Fahrenheit), and it's been sitting around this temperature for at least four days now.

Last year we kept getting down to -55 Celsius, which is right around -67 Fahrenheit. Unfortunately, we are used to the cold.

I heard all about this when I got back from my week in Mexico. I was really sorry I missed it.:)
