Ok so since I am back at work... I am also working service desk... returns oh the fun...
Caller SC: I bought a wii a few days ago it is unopened and I want to return it but I lost the receipt for it...
Me: I am sorry sir it is a 15 day return policy and you have to have your receipt.
CSC: But I dont have it and I decided I dont want the Wii
Me: Sir I am sorry there is nothing we can do. Did you use a credit card?
CSC: Um it was cash.
Me: then sir there is nothing we can do. We can not take the electronics back with out a receipt.
CSC: *que rant on how I am everything from a thief to hardhearted* I want a manager NOW
Me: Ok sir it will be a few minutes as I put you on hold and get a manager.
*i get the manager and low and behold same answer ooo the guy got nasty*
CSC #2 Hi I bought a ipod nano and lost the receipt and decided that I dont want it.
Me sorry without a receipt we can not take it back. Did you pay cash or creidt?
CSC #2 oh it was cash
Me Sorry then there really is nothing I can do
CSC#2 rants and asks for a manager... only to be told the same thing...
funny these were less then 5 min apart...
Air bed suckage
The store policy is you can only return them unopened with in so many days... if they have been opened then no return except for defects and then you can only exchange.
This is due to people getting them using them and returning them... a few bad apples spoils the barrel
Do you know how many nasty names I have gotten called when people try and return them??? or when as a cashier I tell people this before I ring up their air beds.... Oi

Ah, the retail rental customer.... I've actually heard people discuss this tactic right there in the store.
SC1: "I know Dad's coming to visit for the Super Bowl, but I can't afford the really nice TV."
SC2: "No problem. Just buy it now and return it when Dad leaves. Get the really nice bedding set, too, so Mom won't bitch about that ratty crap you've got in the guest room now."
SC1: "I can do that?"
SC2: "So long as you keep your receipt, they have to take it all back."
Yes, yes you can, but NO, no you shouldn't! You want to rent things, there are stores for that! :censored:

And people wonder why return policies get shorter and more ridged.

and see the stores here tack on an additional 25% "restocking fee" for any televisions bought before and returned after the superbowl

This is why our store doesn't give cash refunds (except in very rare circumstances and then the manager has to OK it - and he's not spineless). We give either a Returns note, which when handed in the same day gets the customer that amount taken off their bill, or a Credit note, which is valid for a year at any of our stores.
We still get people arguing. "But I paid you cash! I'm entitled to have the refund in cash too!"
Sorry, no you're not. It's not faulty, we're not obliged by law to take it back at all. It's amazing how many people think we are, though.

We use an air bed as our bed (small apartment + not wanting to pay for a mattress we won't want after we move out), and we've bought many of them (cats + heavy people makes for a short-ish life... and the cats have only managed to kill one, somehow), and we've never been informed that they can't be returned.
Then again, we've never even considered trying to return one.

The Wal-Mart I shop at is notorious for having people buy air conditioners at the beginning of the Summer & then return them when the weather startes getting colder. AND the tv thing is also done there too.

I sell high end BBQ pits, most with 20 year to lifetime warranties on the grills and or expensive parts. Had two guys yesterday with worn out burners, same kinds of grill, burners have a 20 year warranty.
Guy number one had his receipt, and just had to pay the $20 shipping for the new burners to be sent to us.
Guy number two did not save his receipt, and could not get warranty burners. He even said to me "Who saves their receipt?" I told him anyone who buys a $2000 BBQ pit and wants anything warrantied on it.

I hate it when people try to return things without receipts. They always claim to have paid for it in cash. Then when you tell them you can't return it they always want to know why. It makes my blood boil. Um, maybe because you don't have proof that you purchased it?!
note: some stores you can still get proof that they purchased it if it was paid for with a credit or debit card, like at my store.

God bless the person who invented restocking fees. Since the swamp amended its return policy to slap a restocking fee on returns of several commonly-rented electronics items, I've noticed the "renting" of those items has dropped off almost completely.
It used to be we'd sell a ton of TVs the week or so before the Super Bowl, and get them all back the Monday after the game.

Wal-Mart should try a restocking fee.

Am I odd in that I would not buy a wii or Ipod without being certain that I wanted one? I mean, they aren't cheap and if I wasn't 100% sure, I wouldn't get it.

I've gotten that often.. People buying all kind of items and suddenly re-appearing wanting to "get money back".. Cause they didn't need or want it after all..
Who the hell can manage to walk into a shop, browse for a while, buy and not want it..? I think I read somewhere that is a kinda sickness.. People want stuff, makes them happy, but they deliver it all back again..

It is more to do with bad planning. They see £150 in their account and they buy something they wanted but did not need. Then, a few days later, their car breaks, or they get a bill, or they need it for something else...
Also, how many people have been yelled at because the refund (which was tenious at best) did not take place INSTANTLY. "When I bought it, you were quick enough to take the money, why can't you give it back so quickly?!?"

not at all; it just shows that you consider what you're buying before making or not making the purchase.
too logical for the sc, however; doesn't fit in with the 'i want i want' mentality.

I was looking at an item (forget what) that I needed for a weekend because mine was broken and was just checking prices, I was told that the store "does offer a 14 day return policy if you are unsatisfied for any reason" :/
Seriously, NOT a sales tactic and WILL get the return policy reduced/ended like happened at Costco

I think I would have spoken to that guy's manager.
I suspect he's getting a commission on sales, and he doesn't get hit for returns on things he gets out the door. Totally scuzzy thing to do and not in the stores best interests at all.

I see this all the time. I support very high end computer parts.
If you're buying a burger at a fast food place you don't really need to save your receipt.
If you're buying a $4000 piece of computer hardware, you damn well better save your receipt!
Consider the worth thing that happens if you lose your receipt. Ohnoes, you're out $1 for your value meal burger, ohnoes. Or you could be out $4k.

I heard a story, actually several stories, from a guy working at the customer service desk at an IKEA. A woman comes in wanting to get a refund on a 5 NKR plastic spoon. Fine enough, until she tells CSM that she just drove 30 km to get it done...
For the average challenged customer, spending well over an hour t/r and a small fortune in petrol to get a measly 5 kroner back is just insane.. And shows the kind of mentality people have when "I can get some money back", barring completely the expenses involved.

Tis smart.
A former co-worker was once a mechanic at a Jeep dealership, a doctor brought in his brand new Cherokee (early 90's) for service, and asked FCW what the "extra shifter" was for.
You know, the one that activates 4 wheel drive.
Turns out he had no idea what this vehicle could do, all he knew is that his neighbor had one and he wanted it too.
He could have done his research, or test driven, asked questions and been sure he wanted it before dropping his money on it.

The other possibility with this is that they're depending on people not being on the ball enough to remember to return it within the window. (14 days being a shorter one). Yes, they'll have to deal with people yelling at them about returns, but there's also a large percentage of the population that goes "shit, I screwed up. Oh well". Although, in theory, they're less likely to be the ones using the return policy as a rental.
