How do I go back?
I had an older gentleman call me over...
OG: "My friend...?" *curls finger to summon me*
J: "Yes?"
OG: "I started to type this number... *points at his screen, where he has typed a 4 for his produce number* But it's supposed to be a '3'... how do I fix it?"
J: *eye roll, lean forward, tap backspace*

But I want to buy those
Had a mother and daughter buy a whole lot of stuff, and they get to their last items, a bunch of bananas.
M: "How do I scan these?"
J: *I reach across her and tap the screen, inputting the code, and gesture for her to set the hand of bananas on the scale*
M: "But, I want to buy them."
J: "And all you have to do is set them on the scale."
M: "But, I want to buy them."
J: "Please, just set them on the scale, I swear, you'll be able to buy them."

Bonus I'm a geek...
Had a customer and her... cousin, I think...
She blurted, "It's a wonderful night for a fire..."
My mind immediately went, "... but it's a horrible night for a curse..."

The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night. Or my favorite from Order of Ecclesia and Judgment, "I am the morning sun come to vanquish this horrible night."

Yes, we have no bananas... (Sorry, it's Monday.)

Last winter, my cousin from New England came down to visit for a couple of weeks. We went to the grocery store, and as is my usual practice I went straight for the U scan.

Cuz was completely mystified and even a bit afraid of the UScan. She would have preferred to have us stand in a long line that have me show her how to use it.

I don't get why people are so afraid of technology when the designers generally do such a great job of making it make life easier (exceptions of course, always exist).

Oh, hey, a link from another thread has the answer for that. Kids who are told they're smart can become risk-averse, so anything that might show them to be "less-than-smart" is to be avoided at all costs.

*raises hand shamefully on that* I'm actually not terrible or stupid with the U-Scan, I just don't like them. They kind of scare me. Also, I tend to hate anything I have to put cash into, 'cause I suck at unwrinkling stuff. :p

I knew I forgot something...
One of the registers in my bank of computers has been unable to accept cash the past few nights. Seriously, just can't read it or something... the cash slot gets all jammed up when you try... so, big ol' sign stating NO CASH TRANSACTIONS! SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE! goes on over the cash slot. Does that stop people from trying to do cash transactions on it?
Do I really need to answer that question?
Last night, when they did cash pulls, I watched them pull out probably $100 from the bill collector...
"I don't have a card...!"
J: "Well, I don't have any change to give you in my drawer, because people like you keep trying to pay for your items with cash on a register that doesn't take cash."

Well, that's sure not my cousin's problem (love her to death, but sometimes she makes me want to scream).

I love anything that makes life easier. Does it make lines go quicker? Is is less work? Bring it on!

Oh, and I forgot more:
Some People are too stupid to be inconspicuous
Had a couple come in late last night, and the guy blurted "We just came in for *garbled, I hate the acoustics in the store, I swear I have trouble hearing people two feet from me...*
She kind of blushes, and says, "I don't think she cares what we came in for..."
Honestly, no, not really. I mostly care about getting through the night without killing people...
They wander off and shop a bit, I sit there watching the front end like I do.
Guy comes back up, and asks, "Do you sell cigarettes?"
"Yes. What do you need?"
"*garbled again, then looks pissed off*"
"I'm sorry, what was that?"
"Rolling papers...?"
"No, sorry, we don't have those."
Off he goes again.

And MORE
Had a group of four come up to me and get loud immediately...
"CAN YOU DO WIC ON THESE?"
"No... but..."
*cuts me off* "ARE THERE ANY OPEN REGISTERS?"
If you would let me finish... "No, but I can open one up... but ONLY for WIC, nothing else. I have no drawers to take money or checks, and they don't like me running credit at night."
She ended up buying a jar of Similac, and nothing else on WIC...

I'm not afraid of technology, but I have little patience for stupid people (and the older I get, it seems I have less and less patience at times.) And if I'm in a store that has the UScans, I'd much rather stand in the regular line so I can be checked out rather than get stuck behind some moron with a buggy full of groceries and whatnot spending 30 minutes trying to figure out how to use that damn UScan.

I actually get out quicker that way and, unless the line is being held up by some ding dong who shouldn't be let out without proper supervision, less headache for me.

Key here is that it's kids who are told that they're smart. The article was mainly about how it's a bad idea to tell kids that they're smart in the hopes of making them smarter, because it does the opposite.

Actually, it was about a study that demonstrated that telling anyone that they are some general trait actually has a deleterious effect. If you want to improve self-esteem, it's best to praise specific actions or efforts.

I work at a kiosk in front of a grocery self-scan. I get the pleasure of people watching all day, right there, at the golden center of it all. And people Amaze me.

"Why does this need to happen SO often, like every five minutes?!"

I feel sorry for the attendant who has to watch the self scans at the store near my house. If I had to listen to that stupid canned voice all day long, I would flip out and end up naked on the roof with a deer rifle.

There is one machine there on which the voice is not working. I love that one!:D

I hate Uscan, I come to a place so someone else can work, many places ditched baggers in favor of having the customer do it or making the cashier do both jobs. I refuse to use Uscan because I hate how bossy it is. I admit to being one of the people who has the cashier scan my stuff for me at the Uscan if they really insist on me using it.... actually that is usually becasue i say "If you want me to use that thing, your not allowed to get pissed when I start kicking and punching it for pissing me off" or at that point they let me stand in the long line.
So I'm not too stupid for Uscan I'm just lazy. I could easily figure out the technology.... but I know these stupid people Juwl, they are the same morons who can't follow the prompts on my gas pumps.... I wish I could say "No really that window with the directions has been there for years, its not my fault your looking at the LCD for price instead of the prompt"

I understand how to use UScan, I've used UScan before..but honestly I would prefer to go through a lane with an actual cashier. Even if I have to wait in line for hours. The UScan with the multiple bags are not that bad..but once they are full it drives me crazy with the "Please place the item in a bag." HOW? WHERE? *ahem* yes I know there are options to skip bagging and all that, but its the mild OCD thing.

So me and UScan..we won't ever get along until they figure out how to make one with about a hundred bags..just so I would never have to get the OCD twitch when it tells me to place something in a bag.

I confess. I only read the article before putting it up, I've never read the original paper (they're generally based on multiple papers, and I'm lazy). Thank you for clearing that up, I had come out with the misunderstanding that it was ok to say "you're a hard worker" or the like.

I have to throw my vote in with those who are capable of using UScan but absolutely abhor it. Sure I used it last night for a half dozen items and electronic payment. I only did so because I'd been in the store almost eight and a half hours and didn't want to wait five minutes extra for a cashier when the irritating option was sitting open and ready for use.

My biggest annoyance with UScan is the fact that the lag from the weight comparisons (making sure you put the right item on the scale with the bags) and the delay with the cheap touch screens for produce codes give a maximum of ten to fifteen items per minute. If I spend any noticeable length of time on register in a day I feel embarrassed if my IPM drops below thirty.

And the voice, gah, yes, I just want to rip the speakers out of those things after a few minutes near them.

The self-scanner at the local Costco is pretty decent, I think. You can move pretty fast with that thing, if you can get the barcodes to hit the scanner.

Well, that sort of praise is ok, if I read it right, because that's something that the praisee did and has control over. Things like "you're smart" and "you're so cute" are basic traits that are generally out of the control of the one being praised, and they come to think that that is the only thing they have going, and if they lose that one thing, they have nothing left.

When they work, they're great. However I often get one that tells me there are 'unreconised items in the bagging area', or some such. It is all I can do to resist the urge to shout, 'NO THERE AREN'T YOU STUPID :censored:ING MACHINE!'
