I answer the switchboard for a college. Our business office does not have a hold line when there are no free lines, just a message that the operators are busy.

More times that I can count I've had the following conversation.

Them: Hi, I called the business office, but it said that all the operators were busy and to call back later. What does that mean?
Me: That the line is busy and you have to call back later.
Them: ......oh

And it's never the "oh yeah, duh!" "oh" it's the "oh thanks for clearing that up for me". Maybe I'm overlooking something here but I'm not sure why so many people get hung up on that.

Damn. I already had a headache BEFORE I read that.

It means your mummy never loved you and you should stick your head in a wood chipper. :chipper:

Gladly, just so long as I don't have to give out my collar number...

Course not, you'll be possing as the strange guy with the accent who is administering the IQ test for our school. You get to make up a new name each day.

Cool!
Day one
Baron Von Wolfenstein

Day Two
Lord Alexander of Lower Slaughter

Day Three
Robert Green-Allerton

After this I think the exercise will be over!

Bonus points if they hang up after the "...oh" thinking that you're just explaining the lines are still busy and th--arrrgh

While I am not doubting your skills, I think you are underestimating the students :)

They probably would if the business office didn't either have money they wanted, or have the power to drop their classes when not paid. They're all too impatient to talk to someone.
