View Full Version : Only Cards

I do not work in retail, so my first thread here will be a sighting only,
and a pretty mild one too.

Today, I went to the lokal mall to buy birthday presents. I ended up in
the IKEA store and bought some useful presents and some things I didn't
know I needed. That always happens at IKEA.

As I approached checkout, I saw that the queue at lane 16 was really
short compared to the ones near it. There was a sign (at the same
place where you would expect something like "Express Lane" or "Extra
Wide Lane") with large black letters on yellow background, saying
"Only Cards" and a smaller sign below that explaining that you cannot
pay with cash in that lane (virtually nobody in Sweden uses checks
anymore, so it is cash or cards here).

That suited me fine. I always pay using my debit card anyway. In front
of me in the queue were two older women shopping together, and two
younger.

As this was the first time I say an "Only Cards" lane, and reading
this site for some months has made me more aware of the levels of
suckiness people can strive for, I expected something to happen.

By that time, the cashier had rung up the first woman. She tried to
pay in cash. The cashier explained what "Only Cards" was supposed to
mean. The woman seemed to understand, and the cashier suggested that
perhaps her friend could pay for her purchase too, and she could give
her friend money later. The woman talked to her friend, who apparently
said "OK", because the cashier started to ring up her stuff too.

I suspect you have already figured out how women no. 2 tried to pay.

Yes. In cash. Roll the same explanation again. The second woman really
insisted on paying cash, and the cashier had to explain that she
really did not have anywhere to stash the cash she wasn't expected to
handle.

They ended up having to go to the back of the queue at the adjacent
lane in order to pay. :_)

Unfortunately, the cashier at that lane allowed them to skip to the
front. :-(

By the way, as I said, this is the first time I've seen a lane where
only cards are accepted. Is this common elsewhere?

One night, when I was working at Goodwill, the store got SLAMMED close to closing. (Say, maybe about 15 minutes or so before time.)

Anyhoo, management had me run a register without a cash drawer in it. Checks and CCs only, thank you very much.

Announcements were made, and I told EVERY customer who came to my register that I could accept cash. They said, "OK".

Got one customer's items all rung up and totalled, and they tried handing me cash. That void didn't look nice on my paperwork for the night.

Here normally you see "cash only" registers (and that means CASH only, no checks, no debit cards.) because they're faster to process than debit, credit or checks, so it's a kind of a fast-lane.

OToH I can see a CC-Only register to be faster for personel change since there should be no drawer count/exchange involved in it.

When our checkout line starts to get long, additional cashiers are pulled from the sales floor. Since they'll be running empty registers with no cash drawers, they can only accept cards on those lanes.

I was in a line in an Ikea last week, I ended up in a "cash only" line. I happened to say to my grandson that it was lucky I had some cash if that was all they took. The line just melted away. Seriously, there were five ahead of me and they all remembered they had no cash and went to other lines:wave: . You bet I'll try that again next time :p .

Off topic, but I love Ikea. It makes me sad that the one we have in Perth doesn't sell Swedish meatballs.

IKEA is like crack for suburbanites :p

Seriously, that's one of the few stores in the 'burbs (at least locally) that's always packed no matter when I go in there. It's a good thing they take debit, otherwise, I would have been SOL when buying a new armoire, end tables, lamps, a big plant, and other goodies recently. Unfortunately, I haven't tried the meatballs yet. But, that'll change the next time I head over there.

It is not too hard to prepare them yourself. Google found

which seems to be a rather mainstream recipe for "köttbullar".

Every sentient race has its own version of Swedish meatballs. 20 points if you can site the source.

I got caught in a "credit only" line at Best Buy a few weeks ago. Thing is, the guy neglected to TELL me it was "credit only." It was no big deal, I was just buying a soda and there was nobody at the next lane, so I got out quickly.

Not Babylon 5 per se but the babylon 5 offshot. altough they might've drawn the idea into Babylon 5 propper and I don't know about it. the quote (and I saw this years ago) went something like this afaik:

"There's only two similarities between ALL the setient races in the galaxy, one is they all have a dish equivalent to meatballs"

Odd look by the human

"Yes I know how it sounds, but it's true... the second one is they all have legends of an ultimate evil that's gonna come some day"

We had no change over the weekend where I work, so we ended up having to make a couple of tills cards only. There was a sign on the end and everything; both these tills had only pennies and 5ps, so obviously couldn't take cash. Didn't stop the SCs bitching and whinging about it tho.

The meatballs are yummy. Once or twice my mom and I have stopped at IKEA on the way back from RI for the sole purpose of having the meatballs :D
