View Full Version : Need Zelda...now!

I preordered Skyward Sword bundle last month, and alas Amazon says it will not be delivered until the 23rd. ( it comes out tomorrow)

I am sorely tempted to buy the 3ds and Ocarina 3d, but the reasonable part of my mind is saying "be good, you have Christmas gifts to buy."

So I may just replay the one Zelda game I have not beaten, (I stopped playing it because it is awful)....Spirit Tracks.

Sigh, Zelda addiction is a pain...:)

I'm getting antsy now too. I preordered mine from GameStop, and got the e-mail yesterday that it had shipped. Now I just need to wait for it to get here.

If you're a big Zelda fan you might find these videos amusing (I sure did).

The Angry Video Game Nerd reviews the Zelda CDi games:

For those who don't already know, those videos aren't the least bit safe for work or sensitive ears.

I just came here to make a thread about this...looks like someone beat me to it! :p

I preorderd it back in August at GameStop, the one with the golden Wii remote. I'm drooling in anticipation for tomorrow. I don't work until 2, so I'm planning to go to GameStop right when it opens and picking up my copy! :D I haven't been disappointed with a Zelda game yet, and so far this game looks like it won't break that trend! :D

Come on work, GO FASTER! :p

We ordered ours from Amazon and won't get it till later this week...not a big deal to us, since we're engrossed in Skyrim right now anyway.

A friend of ours, though, went to Walmart last night at midnight to get a copy since he wanted to play it right away...and they told him it wasn't being released until the 22nd (Tuesday) and they wouldn't sell it till then. :( Sucks for them, since our friend went to Best Buy as soon as they opened this morning and picked it up there, instead. Kind of a stupid mistake on Walmart's part, since this is a fairly big release.

I went to GS Sunday morning to get it, complete with shiney wiimote and controller condom ^^ I'm about to hit the first temple, I've been taking my time.

I definitely like so far, getting used to flying took me a while; but I hate having a shield that falls apart when somebody sneezes at it >_< Is there a way to deal with Deku Baba's and scrubs without a shield (early on), aside from just running past them? Hearts are easier to get back than shield energy. One nice thing is that you can always toss stuff at the Baba's (piranha plants)...

As for length: Ninty says 40+ hours including Hero Mode as the second play-through (New Game+, harder difficulty, NO "hearts" appear in the field without a specific Relic on hand, and it's the only way to get the best shield in the game). PS, the hearts thing isn't THAT much of an issue... ever notice those conveniently-placed tree stumps and benches? Walk up to one and hit A to sit down and heal up ^_^

So far, I like this game much better than Twilight Princess---which for me is up there with Majora's Mask in...not ever wanting to play again. And I'm still at the very beginning, and have to get my son to play some parts for me, because I lack patience.

The controls seem...better? Or less frustrating, than the ones for Twilight Princess (which we had for both the Wii and the Gamecube).

And I like it way better than Windwaker (seriously hate water).

Hate that you can't seem to skip the cut scenes. They certainly are proud of them, I guess.

(I secretly covet the 3DS bundle with OOT3D, but I cannot justify the purchase, and son1 just got a DSi LAST Christmas, and son2 is not getting a 3ds at age 6...)

(I've been owned by Nintendo since about 1985. Son1 was Link for Halloween when he was 4...heh)

Kheldarson

Eddie The 'Ead

I couldn't stand it any longer. I got some extra money on this paycheck for working veteren's day, and my next check will have DOUBLE holiday pay on it for Thanksgiving and today, so I now own Skyward Sword (and a new Wii since my ex stole the old one).

My arm is KILLING me ( I need to hit the gym again).

I only just beat the Earth Temple (playing Zelda and WoW), and the final boss there was not pleasant.

Some advice, do not play this game with a cat on your lap. While wildly swinging your sword, the cat will get tangled in the nunchuck cord, and you will take damage.

Kara
11-26-2011, 04:46 PM
Played through the intro part last night before bed. So far it looks great and I'm liking the controls (I didn't have a Wii yet when Twilight Princess came out, so I played the Gamecube version, this is my first Zelda with motion controls). Not sure how I feel about the stamina gauge, I can see that becoming a slight hassle later in the game (enemies and obstacles that specifically will cause you to lose stamina when it's really needed).

And the bit where you had to jump off the statue and use the sailcloth at the last second and land in the circle was annoying (yes, I could have used the sailcloth at any time to make it easier but Zelda told me to use it at the last second so that's what I did). If Zelda games have taught me anything in recent years, it's that minor instructional bits like that will come into play later on a much grander scale, usually near the end. Joy.

I am REALLY liking Zelda's character this time around.

A friend of mine demonstrated the secret of the main theme song of Skyward Sword for me yesterday, which made me love that song even MORE.

One thing I've wondered, I know SS takes place before Ocarina of Time, but is it ever disclosed how far before it it takes place?

Also, is anyone else having problems with stabbing the you-know-what's in the mining facility? I bring them down to my level, but Link just won't stab. But any other time he stabs just fine. It's frustrating!

Kheldarson
11-26-2011, 07:31 PM
Point the Wiimote up. If that's having issues, then pull out something with a targeting ability and center the Wiimote again.

Also, in terms of timing, one can only imagine it's been several centuries at least between the two. Considering how disconnected the land is in SS, and how all the lands are one towards the end.

I'm more trying to figure out all the story connections, but that'll be spoilers and I'm not going to do that.

Has anyone played the two Oracle games? Those and Link's Awakening are my favourite LoZ games. I never really got the hand of wandering around a big 3D world - I like the top-down look which is slowly vanishing by the looks of it. Oracle of Seasons is the one I like best - I love the mechanic of changing the season to bypass obstacles.

I did enjoy the Oracle games. The ones I hate are Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks (still haven't finished ST) . Majora's Mask annoyed me enough to quit video games for a bit, but I like it now.

Just finished the 3rd temple....the boss was a fun fight. Loving the storyline, but taking a break from it tonight to check out the new WoW patch.

Kara

I actually enjoyed Spirit Tracks. It was different (well, okay, it was just WW and PH but stuck on a train instead of on a boat) and kind of fun. I really liked that Zelda took on a much more active role as far as the story and gameplay.

And then it had a horribly lame final boss and disappointing final battle which kind of killed the whole thing. But at least it was fun getting there.

Mainly because, if you made the mistake of NOT finishing it all in one go, it was really easy to lose track of where you had been and what you had done, as well as which water-level-changer-thingy you needed to use next. It is one of the few levels in any game where I will unabashedly tell people "Just give up and use a guide/FAQ", even if it's their first attempt.

I enjoyed it, the ending was awesome. Be sure to watch the credit sequence and stick around after the credits finish rolling. Once I'm finished with stuff I need to do for this semester I'm gonna start tackling Hero mode.

I have to say as boss battles go, this game had some really interesting ones compared to past games. I particularly enjoyed the battles with Ghirahim. I found the battles with The Imprisoned to be the most annoying/difficult personally. The boss for the Desert Sanctuary I really enjoyed but by far nothing tops the run up to Ghirahim just before the final boss battle. I'll just say that was epic.

All in all I think this is one of the best entries in the series both from difficulty, dungeons, items, boss battles and all around story telling.

I agree on the controls aspect. I think I had them mostly down, but I play in a seated position with little room for actual wide movements which made for some issues. Often times if I wanted to do a quick slash from right to left I ended up doing a overhead slash at a downward angle OR if I moved too quick I ended up with an upward vertical slash. I honestly think some of the enemies that are meant to be pushovers were a little more difficult because I had difficulties attacking from precise directions 100% of the time.

Also the controls are just a tad too sensitive, it made aiming the bow/slingshot and consequently some of the boss fights a tad annoying.

And the Harp Mini-game, don't even get me started.... I about had fits just trying to play the *$%&^%# thing let alone play in time with a beat.

You have the dungeon for the flame to do, a quest that involves revisiting all 3 major areas, another dungeon and then the final encounter yet. (all in all took me about 15+ hours to do with a little bit of side-questing in between)

NOTE - GAME-BREAKING GLITCH!

Fair warning - and this is making me hope against hope, even with its relatively small bit of internal storage, that they will PATCH this game via a download...

When presented with the late-game quest to gather the three songs, do the Thunder Dragon/Desert LAST. There is a specific sequence of events you might end up doing that will irreparably corrupt your save file if you do not. Doing the other two songs first will ensure that one of the preliminary steps needed to cause this glitch never takes place.

I got one of my X-mess gifts early - BF got me a Wii! And I nearly peed my pants. :) Skyward Sword is on my list of coveted games, but I'm not sure how much I will enjoy it because I loathe Wii Motes. I always play Wii games with my GameCube controller. EricKei

I prefer the GC controller as well, but I do have to admit that the way this game (and very few others) USES the Wiimote/Nunchuck actually makes *sense* (except maybe for flying. SCREW flying/skydiving). Your sword swipes actually follow your rough movement -- e.g., if you stab forward, Link stabs; do it while running to jump-atack; slash from top-right to lower left (or vice versa), and so will Link -- note that this is a mission-critical skill, as several enemies can only be killed with the proper slash type and/or proper use of the shield...which is still a bit iffy. It does tend to pop out when you don't want it to, ya just gotta get used to it and learn to parry. Fortunately, some attacks can be parried with the sword if you get the timing down *juuust* right.

Lachrymose

Wait until you destroy all of them. Remember how to skydive? You got to land on the thing's back.

Landing on his back = super easy for me (I actually destroyed all the eyes once, but then the parasite killed me...and then I have to destroy those stupid eyes again.)

But those eyes...uggh...I have flown around for 20 minutes trying to get just one of them and couldn't.

Chanlin
12-09-2011, 12:08 AM
I had trouble with the eyes too. What worked for me, but can be a bit of a pain is to fly in close tap the brakes then line up a shot and hit charge. When I say "tap" I do mean "tap" slow down too much and the big giant fish gets out ahead of you. I also found it much easier to come at the eyes in a dive from above rather than head on.

What made this sequence most difficult for me was the speed at which the giant fish is flying.

Okay, so I finally beat the damned Wilford Brimley Whale. And now I'm fighting Demise again. And he's hard...geez..it's like the game went from very slightly difficulty to 11 in no time flat.

This fight took me a bloody bazillion tries. Or at least it felt like it. I'm assuming your on the very final fight. Learning to use the shield bash is almost a must for the fight IMO. It also helps loads if you do the Boss Rush from the Thunder Dragon and earn the Hylian Shield. Also I found it extremely useful to fill every bottle I had with heart ++ potions. (the heart potion upgraded twice).

***THERE BE SPOILERS HERE(contains specific hints for the final boss)***
In the first phase just parry with the shield and counter attack. For the second phase you can do one of two things. 1: Just like he does hold up your sword and let it get struck by lightning. This will let you do an attack similar to a skyward strike that will stun him. While stunned hit him several times and he will get knocked down, you need to immediately do a fatal blow attack. 2: Use your shield to parry his attacks, you will have to parry several in a row and then counter attack the last hit. Eventually you will knock him down. You need to immediately do a fatal blow when he is down. I found the second method easier because every time I tried to charge the sword he always rushed me and knocked me down. Whichever method you choose you need to not be next to him when he holds his sword up to charge it because it sends out a close range shock wave that will knock you on your behind.

I haven't strayed *too* much from the main storyline and I haven't cheated by looking things up (except one time early one. I didn't realize that a bomb would roll as far as it had to).

But I have 80 hours in this thing and I just got to the Skyloft Hold.

I'm reading that people beat this in 45 hours or so. Yikes.

Maybe I'll do a quick poll here.

How long did it take you to beat (or how long do you have in it at what point)?

You know, just so I can feel worse and all.

I think I was at around 60 hours (I can't check since I'm on hero mode and I didn't copy the file). I know I was at 55 when I completed the song of the hero.

Bringing back this thread to say how much I HATE flying and the stupid spiral charge trial.

Tried it an embarrassing amount of time, and I can only get 8 targets before the time round out. ARRGH

Just got it for Christmas, so I'm a little late to the party. Haven't had much time to play, so I'm only as far as the getting the Goddess Sword. Would be further if I didn't discover I could kill bugs and watch their little ghosts wisp away...Hubs (who got it for me) rolled his eyes, threw up his hands, and stormed out of the room when he realized I was just pissing around and not progressing the game any. :p

bhskittykatt you aren't the only one late to the party. I just got the game today. Have to say so far it's very interesting. Also, I have three words: I. Hate. Skulltulas! I just had one kill me...probably sounds pretty noob-ish, I know, but just...gah!

Just FYI for those interested - the Big N has finally broken down and released an official (as in conformed by Zelda's creator), canon timeline for the series (minor spoilers for OOT within, by its very nature) -- a translation follows.

Interesting, EricKei. I'm not sure I buy it...the whole hero failing thing for one leaves me scratching my head. Just from reading the comments, I can see how many, many questions the timeline still leaves. It sort of makes sense, and yet it doesn't. Hmm...

I do need to make one correction -- Aonuma didn't create Zelda, he is the one who took over the reigns, iirc. However, he is the one who has apparently confirmed the accuracy of the chart.

It does indeed leave some holes -- for instance, the fact that the two Oracle games (Ages and Seasons) took place *at the same time* on different islands, but featuring (theoretically) the *same Link*, which suggests parallel dimensions on a smaller scale (note that Ages involves time travel).

The "Link wins but goes back to being a kid, and gets (kid) Zelda to help him convince the King not to trust Ganondorf" is the ending according to OOT. That's the one in the middle. The other two are "what if" timelines, as far as I can tell, or else Terminator-style time paradoxes that caused dimensional splits. Right timeline: Link wins and stays as an adult. Left split: Link loses; note that this leads to most of the more popular games in the series. I would also like to see if they have any definitive listing of which games feature the "same" Link -- Z1 and Z2 canonically do; Ages/Seasons/Awakening are all supposed to be the same Link (paradox notwithstanding); OOT and Majora canonically share a Link. Being (probable) reincarnations of one person kinda makes sense, and being different people does explain why he's sometimes left-handed and sometimes right-handed.

Guh, they were awful for me at first. I ended up bypassing them where I could and drowning two of them (and then listening to Fi tell me my skill against them was weak when I was hoping for tips). Then I went back up to the sparring hall and saw that my good buddy the Gossip/Sheikah Stone had new messages for me, including a video on how to defeat the stupid things. Much better now.

I'm currently at the start of Din's Silent Realm (and absolutely hating all of those Trials, gyah), but I haven't played in over two weeks due to moving one state over. We're still trying to get the place set up, so I haven't had time for the Wii lately. :(

Skulltullas are vile.

The timeline is interesting.....seems rather complicated.

I FINALLY got past the Spiral Charge trial. No idea why it took me so long, hell, I almost gave up on all things Zelda, I was getting frustrated.

And I can I say....please, Zelda games....stop with the collecting quests.....they are getting old. Tadpoles, really?

I am tempted to get a 3DS....the Zelda bundle....but that just might be over the top. I thought I read a rumor of a new Zelda for it in the future......

Its over. I FINALLY beat it.

Some thoughts:

Fi is far more annoying than Navi. Yeah, I went there :) Yes, I am aware I am about to die, thank you for pointing that out.

Flying sucks.

Nice to have a long Zelda adventure, and I still haven't gotten all the side quests.

Loved the storyline. A good way to start the saga.

Link had more facial expressions, there are time he actually looked pissed instead of just confused.

The ending: pretty, but not as epic as I psyched myself up for. Still, will beat last baddie again and watch over again :)

Guess it up to the heroic mode and/or playing Ocarina 3DS. Or WoW :)

I'm not so sure on that. It seems to be a real trend, even amongst die hard Zelda fans, to want to throw the sword into the sea just to get rid of Fi.

I'm currently in the middle of doing the Fire Sanctuary. Yes, Fi is damn annoying. Yes Fi, I'm aware my hearts have dropped. I'm also aware what a puzzle door is and what's behind it. Stop pointing out the obvious, damn you!! Oh and Scapper? My name is not Master Shortpants, thank you. You're lucky I didn't shove you into the lava on the way up the damn mountain! ETA: Screaming "MONSTERS!!!! OMG!!" as I'm trying to defeat said monsters is not helping me. Escorting Scrapper up the mountain had to be one of the most annoying things in the whole game...aside from Fi, of course.

Eh, at least Fi can still be asked for useful info even when she's being annoying. And it's easier to ignore the "helpful" chime she makes than it is to ignore the constant "Hey, listen!" when you're sidequesting instead of going to the next Plot Point. And when I'd listen to Navi just to try to get her to shut up, and then go back to sidequesting, she'd go back to pestering me.

Uh yeah. You have to make sure nothing attacks him, and if you get too far ahead of him he screams at you to wait for him. Then as you're killing "MONSTERS!!!" to protect him, he bitches about "Are you gonna handle these?"...Ugh! I was never so glad to reach the top of Eldin Volcano as I was when I finished that, I swear!

That one really frustrated Hubs. It also didn't help when he proclaimed "I'd like to see you do better", and I got 8 on my first try (his record was 7 until then).

(I'm still way back at the ship yard. I haven't had time to play in over a week. I think Hubby's almost done, though.)

A little help would be appreciated...

There have been tons of players reporting that if you start the Lanaryu desert portion of the quest and then try to do the other quests the necessary events do not trigger. Some have said that completing the Lanaryu quest will fix the problem, other have reported that the only thing they can do is restart the game.

I read a few posts from different sites that once you start a dragon quest, you have to finish it. So I possibly (hopefully!) don't have the glitch. They all say not to talk to the Goron afterward though.
