View Full Version : Game Idea: Children of the Gods

So... this is an idea I've sort of had percolating in my head for a while.

It draws inspiration heavily from White Wolf's Scion game-- indeed, some of the characters I have bouncing around my head are ones I created while trying out the character creation-- and I suppose also from the Percy Jackson books. (Not the movie. God no.)

The PCs would be the children of the ancient gods-- what pantheon is up to the players, but it would have to be a legit pantheon, no made-up ones, and sorry, but the Elder Gods/Great Old Ones/Outer Gods would not be present.

Naturally, they'd be banding together to go around fighting monsters and stopping the Titans (them as came before the gods) from wreaking havoc and taking over/destroying the world.

While the idea is based off Scion-- and I'd certainly be drawing heavily from it-- I wouldn't be requiring dice rolls and such to determine damage or things like that. There would have to be limitations on what abilities/relics/etc. the PCs would have, of course.

================
Limitations are key in the early going. Or, if a character has a lot of power, there have to be other drawbacks to it. Balance, y'know.
==============================================

The New Time of Legends
The world as you know it is not all it appears. In this time of science and rational thinking, no one gives much thought to myths and legends. Those are all just old stories, told to explain the things that unenlightened men didn’t understand.

But...

All myths are true.

The gods are real. They helped shape the world and guided early Man to create civilization. They did this to help drive back the advance of the Titans-- the unfathomably powerful entities that represent the fundamental forces of reality-- which threatened to destroy the fragile world that the gods had created. The Titans were defeated and bound away in the Underworld, in the Durance Vile, the Great Prison of the Underworld, which Greek men called “Tartarus.”

However, some time in the past-- no one is sure when, but at least in the last three hundred years-- the Great Prison was broken. The Titans-- the catch-all term for all of the wicked creatures, monsters, and specters bound within along with them-- escaped. The Titans count among their number the Frost and Fire Giants, the Oni, the Fomor, and most of the "evil" creatures of ancient myth.

The Titans have bided their time since their escape. Their goals are mysterious-- not even their most trusted lieutenants know what they are-- but one thing is clear: if they overthrow the gods, mankind will be the worse off for it!

But the gods have found themselves trapped in a binding, of sorts. If they ride out in force to drive back the Titans, they could do just as much damage-- both literally and figuratively-- to the World that the ruling gods of each pantheon have sworn not to do so. The Titans battle the gods on the celestial planes, but their lieutenants and minions are in the world, and must be stopped.

Where You Come In
The gods are known to have had dalliances with mortals. Look no further than any ancient myth or legend or story of heroes-- from the strong who fought monsters and slew them in battle, to the cunning who tricked the devils into jars or chests, to the charismatic who rallied the people and defeated evil tyrants. Most of them were the children of the gods.

In these modern times, the mundane folk don’t believe in the gods so much, and publicly announcing one’s heritage will lead to ridicule at best and institutionalization at worst. And showing off one’s abilities could lead to a panic and a fearful response from the mortal authorities. Both the gods and the Titans want to avoid waking the “sleeping giant” of the mundane awareness of them.

So both sides must work in secret, the Titans corrupting mortals or other divine children to their cause to work as their front men, while the gods recruit their children to fight them as well.

The Masquerade
Mankind does have a “perception filter” over things they can’t explain in these times. In the past, they might have thought they were witnessing something godly. These days, they’ll come up with some other explanation to fit their worldview. This can happen on a broad scale, as well, giving both sides of the Divine War some leeway. But don’t push it.

Pantheon relations
The various pantheons have ... chilly relations, to be blunt. Each pantheon thinks of themselves as The One True Divinity, of course, but they grudgingly accept the existence of the others at the moment because, well, they're at war, and they need all the allies they can get.

There's always going to be some butting of heads when gods of various purviews bump into each other. (Thor and Zeus almost always come to blows, likewise the various war gods.) There are some exceptions to this. The gods and goddesses of love tend to get on well-- sitting around sipping divine nectar and swapping stories-- as do the trickster gods, albeit the latter love to pull pranks on one another. The earth gods tend to get drunk together and complain about pollution. Gods who favor strategy and cunning get along all right, but there's always a game of one-upmanship going on between them. The gods of the sea? A tossup, as they're as mercurial as their home.

The Divine Pecking Order
At the top of the ladder, there are the Greater Titans. These entities are unfathomable, even to the gods, and they encompass the entirety of a single force of reality: Light, Darkness, Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Order, Chaos, et cetera. Long imprisoned by the Gods in the Great Prison of the Underworld, they are freed now, but are slow to act, stretching their ancient muscles after their captivity. They have no desires that we can understand but to be free to act.

Next come the Titans, who each represent a particular aspect of the Greater Titan of which they are a part. The Titans have intelligence and desires that are more understandable, and these are the entities which are dangerous, for they seek outright revenge on the Gods for being imprisoned. They are the entities that seek to reshape, control, and/or destroy the world as they see fit.

Roughly on par with the Titans are the Divinity, the Gods themselves. Since antiquity, they have overseen the running of the world, but in these modern times, belief in the gods has waned considerably, so some are not as powerful as they might have once been. Still, they are more than capable of battling the Titans, but it is taking the majority of their concentration to keep them in check.

The Titanspawn are just below the Divinity in terms of power, but their numbers make them formidable. These are the Oni, the Frost Giants, the monsters of myth and legend. There are orders of power within the ranks of the Titanspawn, from their generals all the way down to the grunts. En masse, they are a match even for the Gods, and some are used just for cannon fodder. The generals are far more cunning and much more dangerous, and they work in the world to undermine the Gods' power however they can.

Roughly on par with the mid-range Titanspawn, there are the Divine Children, such as you, the players. As with the Titanspawn, there are orders of power. There are Unawakened, children of the gods whose powers have not truly awakened yet, who have not been visited by or been made aware of who their Divine parent is. There are the Scions, children of the gods like you, who are aware of their heritage and have begun to use their powers to help in the fight. And then there are the Demigods, the pinnacle of power for those of Divine birth such as you, who are a magnitude of power above you. One can't get more powerful than a demigod without becoming one of the Divine outright.

Finally, there are the mortals, the mundane folk that populate the world. They are far more numerous than any of the other ranks in the pecking order, and both the Divinity and the Titans regard them as something like a "sleeping giant." Mankind is powerful, collectively, in its own right-- in ways neither the Gods nor the Titans understand. Hence the secrecy of the war. There are agents for both sides-- some aware of who they're serving, some not-- but by and large, mankind is unaware of what is really going on.

GM Rules for the Game
1. Real Life Comes First. "Rule One" takes precedence over the others. If you're not able to respond right away, that's fine. We won't be going super fast with this, and if you need to bow out for a while because of RL concerns, that's fine. We can either auto-pilot your character for a while, or have them written out temporarily.

2. Be Respectful of Others. This essentially boils down to "no power gaming." There are some exceptions to this-- which I'll elaborate on later. But basically, if you're dealing with another named character, defer to the judgment of the person running that character.

3. Don't Make Claims Without Consent. Doubtless your characters have accomplished something worthy to be considered for the tasks ahead, but be reasonable about them. (e.g., don't run around claiming to have beaten up a god like Loki, or something. Truth be told, nearly everyone manages to punch Loki in the jaw once or twice, but only another god of the Norse pantheon can really beat him down properly.) Also, the Hulk can beat down Loki any time he wants, but the Hulk's not available.

Pantheons of Note
The Olympians (Greek/Roman)
The Loa (Vodoun)
The Aesir (Norse)
The Aztec
The Amatsu-kami (Shinto/Japanese)
The Egyptian
The Tuatha (Celtic)
The Celestial Bureaucracy (Chinese)

Passive Divine Abilities
These are abilities that everyone of the Divinity-- which includes their children-- possess.

I Can Sense You, Highlander (Divine Sense) -- Those of the Divine can sense the presence of another one of their kind in the area. They can't pinpoint them precisely out of a crowd (unless they know them personally), but it means that the children of the gods can sense the presence of another of their kind if they're somewhere close. This does not work, alas, for detecting the Titanspawn. This ability manifests usually as an "itch" in the brain, and can vary sometimes depending on the strength of the other.

Tis Just a Flesh Wound (Injury Resistance) -- Those with Divine heritage are more naturally resistant to injury and harm. Even an Unawakened scion is tougher than normal. It's not uncommon for there to be collateral damage when scions fight Titanspawn as bodies are thrown through things like furniture and walls, but it's less likely to cause lacerations and contusions and the like.

Just something to note.

==============================================

Some examples... If anyone joins in and this actually takes off, Johnny Merc would be a key NPC-- getting the PCs together and delivering "MESSAGES FROM ON HIGH"-- and Mattieu Carrefour would be a semi-major villain.

==============================================

Name: Johnny Mercury (“Johnny Merc”) (real name: John Tarmes)
Heritage: Son of Hermes, Greek messenger god
Occupation: Courier, B-list actor
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- gold pendant with the astrological sign for Mercury on it
Up, Up, And Away (Limited Flight) -- Merc can fly for short distances
Doors Do Nothing (Limited Phasing) -- Merc can walk through a door as if it weren’t there.
You Can’t Hide From Me (Limited Omniscience) -- Merc, given something attuned to it, can locate anyone/anything, anywhere in the world.

Divine Attributes:

Movie-Star Good Looks (Appearance) -- Merc’s damn good looking, and he knows it. He can also “turn it off,” to avoid attracting attention, which just makes him regularly handsome.
Catch Me If You Can (Agility) -- Merc is at least twice as fast as the average mundane.

Description:
A tall, handsome man with brown hair, brown eyes, and a million-dollar smile, Johnny Mercury is one of those actors everyone’s heard of (his biggest role was in that summer blockbuster a few years back, “Dead Locked”), but never quite makes it to the A-list. When he walks into a room, cameras flash a bit, and TMZ loves this guy.

He can be overly dramatic out in public, but in private, away from the cameras, he “switches off” and tones it down, generally getting down to business. Johnny Merc is the Divine community’s messenger, delivering messages to the Divines’ children, delivering care packages, and especially for the children of the Greco-Roman pantheon, being the one who delivers the truth about someone’s Divine Heritage. He likes this job, too, since there’s a lower likelihood of being shot at or attacked.

Backstory:
From a young age, Johnny knew he was destined for big things. What they were, he didn’t know. But he was getting in trouble for it, and showing off whenever he could. By the time he hit high school, however, he started to realize he had no idea what to DO with his life.

That changed when he was visited by his father just after graduation. (What, you think it was a coincidence he chose “Johnny Mercury” as his stage name?) After learning the truth, he went to L.A., making bank by being a courier for some movie studios until he got his big break.

Johnny Merc’s reputation for excessive dramatics both on and off the set, plus his “whimsical” tendency to disappear for days or WEEKS at a time (those times when Merc has had to undertake a job for the Divinity, such as delivering something to another child of the gods) are the reasons why no studio trusts him as a leading actor for anything “A-list.”

Flaws: Merc’s meant for support, not front-line battle. His natural inclination to dramatics will often come back to bite him in the ass. He’s a big fan of the ladies as well.
Goal: Help support the cause; make it to the “A-list.”

==============================================

Name: Mattieu Carrefour
Heritage: Son of Kalfu, the "god" of the dark crossroads, master of the wicked spirits of the night
Occupation: Grifter, con man, thief
Divine Abilities:

Focus: Onyx ring.
The Shadows Are My Friends (Shadowmancy) -- Mattieu can manipulate shadows in his surroundings, but only shadows that he or his shadow are touching. This enables him to partially bind or strike at enemies.
From Out Of The Shadows (Shadow-step) -- Mattieu can step into a shadow and step out of another within eyesight; shadows must be large enough to encompass him.
Fool You Once (Illusion Disguise) -- Mattieu can disguise himself or someone/something else with an illusion. Illusion can fool any four senses-- sight is ALWAYS fooled-- but can be broken if the canny sense detects the deception. Divine abilities of detection can also break the illusion, and also make it much harder for Mattieu to fool that person again.

Divine Attributes:

Snake Charmer (Charisma) -- Mattieu can be very charming, and does inspire the mundane to assist/follow him.
Feet Don’t Fail Me Now (Agility) -- Mattieu is about half again as fast as the average mundane.

Description:
A young man of tanned complexion and dark hair, Mattieu is handsome, but passably so. He appears rather ordinary most of the time, which is how he likes it. His dark eyes are kind, but they unmistakably show how clever he is. He can’t hide the cunning in them. Generally, however, one would not be able to pick him out of a crowd if asked.

Backstory:
The only child of a New Orleans whore, Mattieu Carrefour grew up without any knowledge of his father. He lived on the street, and took to grifting and con jobs to make ends meet, and became quite accomplished at it. It wasn’t until he came of age that he learned the truth, when he found a stranger with a straw hat and a cane who he couldn’t fool with even a simple scam...

His hands flew across the top of the fold-out table and then he spread his hands apart. Finally the cards stopped dancing under his fingers, and he looked up at the smiling stranger. Mattieu didn’t return the smile, and any friendliness in his eyes had evaporated.

“All right,” Mattieu spat. “Find the lady.”

In response, the stranger laughed, a deep dark sound. “Interestin’ tricks you got there, boy,” he chuckled. Mattieu couldn’t place how old the guy was. He was bald, and he leaned on the cane like an aged person, but his face and body looked young. His eyes, though, his eyes seemed unfathomably old. Then the stranger smiled with yellow teeth and held up a hand, a card between his fingers. He flipped it around and showed Mattieu “the lady”-- the Queen of Diamonds.

With a start, Mattieu looked down at the table, flipping over all three cards. Where before there should have been three black cards (the two, the three, and the five of clubs) underneath, all three showed the Ace of Spades. “But I,” the stranger grinned. “I been doin’ this game far longer’n you, boy.”

That was how Mattieu Carrefour first met his father, Kalfu. That was five years ago. Now he’s even better at his cons, and he’s got his eye on the long game.
Flaws: Mattieu Carrefour is not a fighter. If forced into a battle, he’ll do whatever he can to get out of it and fast. He’s a manipulator and deceiver foremost.
Goal: Unknown.

So much Percy Jackson reference!

But could be neat. You'd want heavy limitations to prevent overly powerful characters, but it could work.

I am definitely interested. Got a character idea fleshed out and outlined below :)

Name: Emmett "E.J." Jager (roughly hebrew in origin for Truth Hunter)
Heritage: Ma'at - Egyptian goddess of truth, justice, balance and order
Occupation: Private Investigator
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- Silver Ankh Necklace

Eyes that see the soul: Emmett is capable of seeing the truth of someone's being simply by gazing at them. This allows him to perceive someone's true nature. This ability can pierce persons disguised by illusions so long as he has gazed the person before as he never forgets what a soul looks like. (this is in part based on the soul-gaze (http://dresdenfiles.wikia.com/wiki/Soulgaze) described by Jim Butcher in the Dresden Files)
Truth be told: Emmett is capable of discerning statements that the speaker believes to be the truth or believes to be a lie. This can not detect lies of omission, but if the speaker does or does not believe what he said is the truth Emmett will know. It should also be noted that this is based on the speakers perceived truth, ie: if the speaker lied but did not know it than neither will Emmett unless he has evidence otherwise.
Order from Chaos: Where others see a jumbled mess Emmett can usually make connections. This puts his investigative ability on par with Sherlock Holmes. (this is based on Walter from the Finder (http://thefinder.wikia.com/wiki/Walter_Sherman))

Divine Attributes:

Ordered Mind: To use a cliche phrase, Emmett has a mind like a steel trap. His memory isn't perfect, but he has a head for details that leaves the average person awestruck.
Elementary my dear Watson: Like the famous investigator, Emmett has an eye for detail that is well above the normal mortal scope.

Description:
Average in appearance in most aspects, height, weight, and so on. Most that see him say his eyes look intelligent. Has dark raven black hair and hazel colored eyes and a sandy complexion. Most people that describe him tend to use the words eccentric and wise.

In personality, if you're familiar with it think of a cross between Harry Dresden and his friend Michael. He is a dogged pursuer of the truth and will never fail to complete any job he takes on or will die trying.

He always tries to do right and good by his own moral standards, but has a tendency to be flippant and downright snarky when things get rough. His eye for truth and disgust for lies has made him somewhat jaded though.

Backstory:
As a child Emmett infuriated teachers and peers alike with his unabashed speaking of the truth and ability to see things even they didn't want to admit were part of their
personalities. Constant scrapes with teachers and fights with children his own age eventually taught him that there is a time and a place for speaking your mind.

After he graduated high school he was visited in a dream by his mother who told him the truth of his heritage. Because of his divine being he knew what she had said to be the
truth so had little trouble accepting it, and it really came as no surprise to him.

With his strong sense of justice he attempted to become a police officer, but found he could not stomach the daily corruption, lies and politicking that came with the job. As such
he went with his heart and earned his private detectives license and never looked back since.

Like the famous detective of literature Sherlock Holmes, he has a reputation for being able to solve any mystery. This makes him both popular and infamous with the
police as both a consultant and a force that is known for meddling where it isn't wanted.

Flaws: Emmett is incapable of telling a baldfaced lie. He can lie by omission or by creative manipulation of the truth, but his divine being prevents him from speaking anything he knows to be false.
Goal: Emmett is dedicated to the cause of Order and Justice and actively seeks to counterbalance the influence of the Titans as much as possible.

Name: Deann Hunt
Heritage: Artemis/Diana, Greek/Roman Pantheon (cuz, honestly, if we try to sort the differences we'll be here all semester), goddess of the hunt, chastity, moon, childbirth, animals
Occupation: Zookeeper
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- Wooden Bow

Shoot The Moon: Deann can shoot anything she targets. The shot won't hit vitals unless she really forces it, and sharp turns by a target throws it off.

Form of the Goddess: Deann can transform herself, or one other person, into an animal for a length of time. Deer and bears last longer than the others. She cannot use any other abilities while using this, even if on someone else.

Shot of Health: Deann can heal or cause minor damage/illnesses with her arrows. The damage from the arrows is not healed through this ability.

Divine Attributes:

Run Like the Deer: If she tried, Deann could break Olympic records in the sprint.

Huntress' Grace: Like her mother, Deann moves silently and gracefully, almost as if she's on the prowl.

Description:
Deann's rather small in stature (barely clearing 5') but has a definitive athletic build to her. Her light brown hair always has a windswept look to it, as if she's always moving swiftly. Her eyes are green and she sports a year round tan that's owed to being outside year round.

She's a very confident young woman, always aiming to get what she wants. She enjoys being around other people, often seeming to be right in the middle of things, yet, if asked, she'll tell you she prefers the company of her pets more.

Backstory:
As a child, Deann grew up in a rural area with a large woods on the property where she spent all her time. It was there she first met her mother, although she didn't know it at the time. Her mother taught her rudimentary hunting skills (like using a bow, tracking animals) which her father, with much surprise, encouraged.

It wasn't until her first heartbreak in high school that she found out the truth. She and her father had to move due to the...fallout, and her father made her swear not to go seeking out her mother again, at least not until Deann was out of his house. Deann agreed, but settled on improving her archery skills and working with animals to better her chances of maybe seeing her mom again someday.

She now happily works at the local zoo and volunteers at the local 4-H club giving archery lessons.

Flaws: Pride. It's difficult for her to back down from an insult or challenge. Fortunately, she did not pick up her mother's vindictive streak.
Goal: Honestly, Deann hasn't thought much about using her heritage beyond meeting her mom again.

It's more take the standard that's been given (see Jay's examples), determine what kind of character you'd like to play, and make the two mesh.

Aye, more or less its make up a character with some neat abilities, just make sure they have some draw back and or aren't unbeatably powerful. Or if you have some highly powerful abilities build in some sort of weakness or flaw to the character.

The basic idea is to be more than mortal and less (probably much less) than godly.

Pretty much what they said. While I'm taking major cues from the "Scion" game, we're not going to bog ourselves down too much with dice rolling and whatnot.

It's true also that the children of the gods are meant to be more mortal than godly, but I do think we can expand on that later when the story progresses.

Name: Lupo Virtus (AKA - Mike 'The Wolf' Hammer (stage name))
Heritage: Mars, Roman Pantheon, War
Occupation: MMA Ring Fighter
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- Simple gold chain worn around the neck.

Combat Mimicry - Any fighting move/style he sees even once, he can copy perfectly. No matter how good his enemy he only has to fight them once to be as good as they are.
Inner Focus - Not only allows him to fight in any possible condition (total darkness, blinding snow, etc), but he can block out all distractions.
Uncanny Dodge - He can avoid most hits, flying objects, etc..if it is possible for them to be dodged. Something like a bullet would be far to fast for him to dodge for example.

Divine Attributes:

Balanced - While he is not the strongest, fastest, most agile..he has a perfect balance of all three. He would not win the title of 'the worlds strongest man', but his strength is far above the average person for example.
Presence - He has a presence that commands respect. He is not very charismatic, so people do not necessarily LIKE him, but he is hard to ignore. Of course..this can be a BAD thing too.

Description:
Half African American, Half Latino. Dark hair 'buzz cut'. ((If you've seen 'power man' on the new Ultimate Spider Man..something like that)).

Backstory:
Lupo has known since birth about his divine heritage. Though he lost both of his parents at 18, by then he had already made a name in the boxing ring. After a couple years of going undefeated..he started to look for bigger challenges. Out of the ring, he is as gentle as a kitten, but once in a fight..he can be totally and utterly ruthless. He has to win..sometimes at all costs. He gets 'visits' from his father from time to time, in his dreams, and it drives him to be the BEST in the world.

Flaws: Every one of his abilities and attributes have their own inherent flaws. He has to be able to see a move in order to be able to do it..so even though he can fight blind..if he is blind he can not learn his enemies moves. Also, he can become so focused on an enemy that other dangers (other enemies, flying obstacles, etc) fade to the background and can completely surprise him. Also..if the combat maneuver is ranged..though he can learn it..it does him no good..he is a melee fighter through and through. While he can dodge things (if his inner focus has not blinded him to them) he can only do so if it is humanly possible to do so. No matrix like dodging bullets or such. Though he is stronger, faster, more agile then the average person .. it is not to demigod status. The son of Hercules, for example would be much stronger. The son of Hermes much faster..and so on. As for Presence..stealth is NOT his thing.

Goal: As stated ... he is driven to become the best fighter in the world.

So, looking at it thus far we have:

- "E.J." Emmit Jager - son of Ma'at - P.I. and Defender of Truth and Justice, and The American Way
- Deann Hunt - daughter of Artemis - Zookeeper and Proud Daughter
- Lupo Virtus - son of Mars - MMA Expert and Looking For A Good Fight

I'd ideally like at least one more PC before we get started. So if someone's looking on and sitting on the fence, jump in!

No worries. I thought the name worked fine.

I'm working on rolling up "opposite numbers" for the villain team. Probably gonna go for a Five Bad Band (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FiveBadBand) kind of arrangement. Not that I want the good guys to adhere to a Five Man Band (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FiveManBand) arrangement, necessarily, just explaining my thinking.

My internet has been out (also why there have been no Foundation replies) and Mytical grabbed the fighty guy role before me!

Well anyway, throwing out my basic idea for now. Today's a bit busy, so I'll get the details sorted out later.

He's the child of Lugh, the Celtic god of light, and his family have seen several such scions through the ages. In fact, they're quite proud of their status (though know to keep it hidden for their own safety), and it's (internally) well-known family lore that they're direct descendants of Cuchulain. His primary ability is ancestral combat memory, a trait possessed by every scion throughout his family line. With it, combat skill is inherited, and builds over time (think Mat Cauthon from The Wheel of Time). As such, the older the weapon, the better he can use it.

More info once I get some things taken care of.

Just wondering if adding an ability would be ok. See, being the son of Mars, was thinking that those around him that he considers allies would be able to get inspiration in a fight. IE doesn't help him any (not directly), but all of his allies would benefit from enhanced combat abilities. Just not sure what to call this ability.

Not right now. As it stands-- and I'll be updating the OP to include the Basic Premise and character sheet-- everyone starts with five Divine Abilities/Attributes. Everyone kind of stuck with a three Abilities/two Attributes template, which is fine, but you are allowed to mix it up if you like.

That said, if someone wants to make changes to their bios to reflect this, you have until... let's say Sunday May 6 to do it.

Finally able to post. Let me know if I need to change anything.

Name: birthname: Edana Conner
stage name: Edana Inferno
Heritage: Belisama, from the Celtic pantheon, the goddess of lakes and rivers, fire, and crafts and light.
Occupation: the fire eater at a circus
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- an elaborate necklace with a ruby in the center
Pyrokinesis - She can create, manipulate, and control fire.
Kinetic Absorption -- She can fire to heal
Matter Ingestion -- She can consume fire with no ill effect (handy for her fire eating gig)

Divine Attributes:
Fish in Water: She's a natural swimmer in any type of water.
Life of the Party: She had a very fiery personality and people are draw to her.

Description:
Edana is 26, 5'6, skinny as a rail, fiery red hair with green eyes. She wears her hair short and spiked. Has multiple facial and ear piercings and tons of tattoos. Uses a handmade longbow when she needs a weapon other then fire.

Backstory:
Edana was 15 and living with her paternal grandparents when she first meets her mother. She always knew she was 'different' and she always suspected her grandparents knew why (they did. their son, her father left her with them and told them why). Her mother showed up outta the blue one day at her grandparents' home. They recognized Belisama for who she was knowing who Edana's mother was.
Belisama sat Edana down and pretty much told her "I'm the goddess of lakes and rivers, fire, crafts and light. You are my daughter. One day you will be called to help fight the hidden war. Prepare yourself." And then she left.
Edana realized really early on she had an affinity for fire.
One incident cemented it: she and some friends were playing too close to a bonfire when someone accidentally pushed her into the fire. Instead of getting burned the fire just kinda carressed her skin like it knew her and wanted her safe. She managed to deflect attention away from her not getting burned.

Flaws: strong willed, short tempered, easy to anger, a total klutz (except in water)
Goal: protect and help her allies (namely her mother)

Here is that second character idea i mentioned. Feel free to use or modify this as you see fit into a PC or NPC.

Name: Saitou Haruko (Haruko roughly means Sun Child, Saitou is the Japanese equivalent of Smith, ie it is a very common family name)
Heritage: Daughter of Amaterasu Omikami -- Shinto Goddess of the Sun and 1 of the 3 aspects that govern the Universe
Occupation: Mangaka (comic artist)

Divine Abilities:

Focus -- A calligraphy brush

A Brush to paint the Universe: Haruko can draw anything. Even if all that remains is a speck of dust she can see what it once was and render its likeness. This will not recreate any words that a book may have contained, but it can show what a building or person looked like. She also never forgets a face or a likeness of anything she has seen and can render it with photo perfect accuracy.
A Light to Banish the Dark: Haruko is able to create one extremely intense flash of light that fades almost immediately (good for blinding folks) or she can cause herself to glow with the intensity of a 60 watt bulb for a few hours.
The Giver of Life: Nature recognizes the child of the one that gives it life. As such in times of dire need Haruko can turn to nature for aid. Plants will shelter her, animals will bring her food or lead her to water if need be. If she becomes lost nature will guide her. However, as Amaterasu reveres all life the Animals will not fight for her nor will they risk death for her.
The Deepest Shadow: Haruko can render herself completely invisible, however this power only functions at night.

Divine Attributes:

The Brightest Light: Haruko is damn good looking. Some might even describe her as a hotty. (pun intended)

Description:
I'll leave this for whoever decides to play her.

Back story:
Ditto from description.

Flaws: Like her mother, Haruko holds all life as sacred. As such she is not able to kill, not even the purest evil. This is not simply a moral choice, but a supernatural effect. Should she try to kill someone any potentially fatal wound will always alter its trajectory to make it non-lethal. This can however be useful if all she wants to do is capture someone as she knows she will never risk killing them. (feel free to add more)
Goal: Ditto from description.

Jay 2K Winger

Sorry, Chanlin, I'm going to have to put the kibosh on Haruko as anything like a player-level character. She comes across as way too overpowered-- reality warping, healing, a divine aura she can't hide-- too overpowered.

Her flaw basically comes across as "oh, I'm so awesome you can all see it, tee hee." That may sound harsh, but she'd need some major reworking to be acceptable.

Jay brought me in.

Name: Aiden Mistel
Heritage: Grandson of Freya, Norse goddess of love and war
Occupation: Retired; previously: financial trader
Divine Abilities:
Focus -- A tattoo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:B_rune_short-twig.svg) on his left wrist.

A Tale As Great as the Eddas (Captivating Storytelling) - Can tell a story that captivates the listeners, and brings them into the world of the story, for as long as he’s speaking, and for a brief time afterward.
Reading The Spinning Thread (Divination) - Can read the future as it currently stands; requires a further Focus of a thread and something to spin it around in order to do this.
I’m Not Heavy, I’m His Brother - [[Due to ~spoilers,~ this Ability is currently kept private to the GM until a further point in the game.]]

Divine Attributes:

Hi, I’m Captain Jack Harkness (Anything That Moves) - A passive ability; his attractiveness transcends gender and orientation barriers. (Even the guys want him - and the girls, and the transfolk, and the queer, and the... you get my drift.)
The Right Tool For The Job (Strategic Knack) - Generally a passive ability; as kin to a goddess of war, he has an innate knack for strategy. Specifically, he’s good at finding the weak point of a situation, whether it’s the unguarded side door of a building, the wavering leader whose defection would cost the war - even the literal Achilles’ heel of a person.

Description:
Looks pretty much like this (http://i.imgur.com/lmFJe.jpg). Lithe, average height, boyish charm.

In personality, Aiden is soft-spoken, with a lyrical voice and a faint Connecticut/LI accent. He is easygoing, with a quick wit and a catching smile.

Hidden behind his gentle voice, however, is sharp sarcasm and a cold cynicism. Due to the loss of his parents and the distance of his adopted uncle, Aiden formed a painfully pragmatic viewpoint, considering both humanity and Divinity to be selfish, close-minded and ‘generally, a pack of assholes with a few roses popping up from the shitheap.’ He will say this with a sincere smile, though. It’s pointless to argue with reality, especially when there are much better things to do...

Backstory:
Aiden Mistel is a curious case. His Divine Heritage is actually sourced from his paternal grandmother, not a parent. Soon after he was born, his mother disappeared in an assumed suicide, and his distraught father soon went missing as well. Aiden was raised by his paternal uncle James Hakken on Long Island, New York. He did very well in school, albeit with a few youthful indiscretions involving indisposed ducks and the superintendent’s car, and went to a prestigious NYC university for finance. At the tender age of 27, he is already technically retired, having weathered the Wall Street meltdown fantastically well, and alternates his days between a prestigious condo in NYC with a view of Central Park, a cozy beachhouse on Cape Cod, and wherever his wanderings take him.

And there are a lot of wanderings. Aiden is a hedonist, enjoying both fine living and the charms of crashing at a run-down motel with the sound of the waves to lull him to sleep.

Flaws:

While he’s able to hold his own in battle, Aiden is generally averse to open conflict. Some may call him a coward - he thinks there are better ways to win a war than a battle.
His cynicism tends to drive people away from him. That, combined with his inability to stay put, makes him a rather lonely person.
As he feels abandoned by his Grandmother, Aiden has a general distaste for the Divine, and tries very hard to stay away from them.

Goal: Avert Ragnarok. However distant he is to his Divine family, the last thing he wants is to see them almost all dead.

Well, let me know if this is an acceptable sort of character or not...

Name: Jack Childs

Heritage: Tlaloc (Aztec god of fertility, rain, water, and lightning)

Occupation: Butcher

Divine Abilities:
Focus -- A knife with a turquoise handle

Storm Call: Wherever there is water, Jack can call up a storm in direct proportion to how much there is (Calling the water for the storm from Tlalocan- The realm of the afterlife ruled by Tlaloc- where it will return once he sheathes the knife), controlling thunder, lightning, and hail if it is big enough (the minimum body of water for lightning is 660,000 gallons- an Olympic swimming pool- and the minimum for hail is 5 times that). The water must be within his line of sight, and cannot have been used for this ability within the past 36 hours. If he gets out of sight of the water source, he will lose control of the storm, which will generally just break up and dissappear, unless it is large enough to be self-sustaining. This ability can be used indoors, and ends when the amount of water drawn from Tlalocan is equal to the body of water that he is focusing on. This ability is very draining, and after an hour has passed after its use has finished, he will be severely weakened and tired for 6 hours, nearly useless.

Forced Growth: Given proper soil and water, Jack can force any plant to grow, either from seed to full maturity, increasing in size, or producing flowers, fruit, and seeds. This will typically exhaust the soil where the plant's roots reach.

Lightning Touch: Jack can produce electricity from his hands, at about the same intensity as a defibrillator. He cannot keep this up for more than 4 seconds in any given minute, and not for more than a total of 90 seconds in any given hour. Attempting to do so will result in both failure and extreme pain.

Divine Attributes:
Have a Heart: Jack can recharge from most exhaustion, hunger, and illness (but not injury) if he eats a raw heart from a mammal or bird. This can also work to reduce the weakness from Storm Call down to 1 hour, rather than 6.

Who's there?: Jack can sense the heartbeats of all natural creatures (And unnatural creatures associated with jungles) within 30 meters.

Description:

Jack is fairly stout- broad shouldered and about 5'6", with a permanent tan, bright blue eyes, and dark, dark hair- a strange mix of Nordic and Mexican stock... except on the nights with thunderstorms. On a stormy night, Jack will grow fangs, and his eyes will turn bright red and large. He tends to dress quite simply, though he'll almost never be without two things- his knife, and an insulated pouch at his belt where he keeps chicken hearts on ice.

Personality-wise, he's quite kind, but that kindness can transform to rage at the sight of things that he believes to be wrong- especially when it's crimes against children. And he has absolutely no trouble with killing those who need killing, or even with torture for those who commit crimes against children.

Backstory:

Jack has never met his father- which isn't all that surprising, considering that Tlaloc has an afterlife to run. He only learned of his divine status after having eaten the heart of the Thanksgiving Turkey- Raw- on a dare, which resulted in a strange illness that was not unlike food poisoning. It was not, though- it was his divine nature coming out. During his time bedridden, he saw many visions of many different things, and came out of it with knowledge of who, of what he was, where he had come from, and how he could keep his powers. When he awoke, his knife was laying across his chest, in its sheath.

Of course, once he got better the following Saturday, he wasn't sure whether or not it was real, until a thunderstorm in the night led to him growing fangs and bright red eyes. He doesn't remember much of the next few years, during which he apparently honed his powers, because his next really clear memory was waking up in a hospital bed at age 25, having been struck by an out-of-control car while shoving a gradeschooler to safety.

Flaws: Although Tlaloc demands child sacrifice, Jack is incapable of any action or inaction that will allow a child to come to harm to the best of his knowledge.

Jack must eat a raw heart (Any species) every week, or he loses all divine capability.

Jack has a bit of trouble functioning in places that have minimal plant life, like deserts and some large cities- he gets somewhat anxious, and less perceptive.

Goal: Jack doesn't have any real goals; he has a good job, with ownership of his own moderately successful shop- a gift from the previous owner, whose child he had saved. With competent subordinates, he can take trips if he needs to, lasting up to several months if he makes arrangements beforehand.

Name: Luke Cooley
Heritage: Son of Lugh, Celtic god of Light; and according to family lore, direct descendant of Cúchulainn.
Occupation: Frequently-unemployed drifter who never holds any job for long.

Divine Abilities:

Focus - Ancient Irish coin worn as a pendant.
Proud Family Tradition - The Cooley family has frequently been influenced by Lugh through the generations, and it has left a mark on everyone in the family line, though the ability only shows up fully in those who are the more direct results of his interest. Any fighting skill or combat experience is passed down as a form of ancestral memory. This means Luke is a world-class fighter when it comes to ancient weapons and hand-to-hand combat, but as weapons become more modern he's less familiar and thus less skilled with them.
Berserk - When pushed hard enough, Luke can slip into a berserk state where his strength, speed, reflexes, and stamina all go through the roof. However, like Cúchulainn, he can very easily lose control of himself while in this state. Due to the damage he can cause and the risk he poses to people around him, he tries to resist hitting this point at all. But if he completely holds himself back, he'll inevitably snap and go all-out.

Divine Attributes:

Hold the Line - Perhaps in memory of Cúchulainn's last stand, Luke can push his limits to a ridiculous degree, such as going days without sleep or continuing to fight until he can no longer stand. He still suffers for it afterwards, though.
Well-Rounded - Luke's strength, speed, and toughness are all above-average, though not anything superhuman. Still, he's near the best anyone could be.
You Really Wanna Do This? - Luke's a bit unhinged in a fight, and his opponents can usually sense it. It's sometimes enough to get less experienced fighters to back down, but against anyone who's a seasoned combatant it might just throw them off their game a bit.

Description: 24 years old, red hair, and a bit more tanned than you'd expect from an Irish kid. That's courtesy of he various jobs he's had doing outdoor manual labor, and time spent walking from place to place, as he's never been able to afford a car. Only faint traces of an Irish accent can be heard in his voice - his speech more identifies him as being from the Alleghenies. He's clever, but mostly uneducated, and reads more than one would expect of someone with his attitudes.

Backstory: Unlike many other children of the gods, Luke knew his father's identity from a young age. The Cooleys have been touched by Lugh many times through the generations, and the family now sees themselves as proud keepers of old traditions. Most of them, anyway. But we'll get to that. Luke's family has a long, proud tradition of being freedom fighters, revolutionaries, rebels, anarchists, and general shit-disturbers. Okay, so it's not always considered a proud tradition by the average person, but the family themselves tend to think highly of it. Luke's great-grandfather, being of rather more sound mind than most of his relations, came to America at the beginning of the 20th century, hoping to start a new life away from all this madness about faeries and gods and warrior's codes, and settled in southern West Virginia.

His son was born just in time to get wrapped up in the Coal Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia_Coal_Wars), and it was then learned that old habits die hard. Soon enough, there were world wars, cultural shifts, and civil rights struggles to get themselves wrapped up in, and with the new generations getting back in touch with the rest of the clan back in the old country, all was right in the world again. So long as you consider all that stuff about rebels and anarchy "right in the world". As far as personal history goes, Luke dropped out of high school because he was "tired of their crap", has never held a job for more than three months (those generally concluding with him shouting at a customer or supervisor), has spent his share of time in jail for misdemeanors (his specialty being "Disturbing the Peace"), and has recently been arrested a total of eight times in three different cities while participating in the "Occupy" movement.

Flaws: Proud, foul-mouthed, and short-tempered, Luke is a walking example of just about every negative Irish stereotype you've ever heard. He frequently lets his temper get the better of him, doesn't know when to back down, and doesn't compromise on his ideals even when it would be better for him to just shut up for a bit. This is on top of the drawbacks inherent to his abilities.

Goals: Personally, a life where he's free to do as he wishes. Further, family tradition holds that it's their duty to carry on the role of defending freedom, particularly that of the Irish people, as the Tuatha De Danann did.

Jay..being worried about two combat specialist, when one know all the moves the other had very quickly, I sent a message to Kabe. While not being able to learn moves would sort of make the point of my character moot, I'd like some sort of divine block or something that would slow the process WAY down when it comes to Kabe's character. Normally my character sees a move once, he can reproduce it just as skillfully as the person who he sees..for Kabe's character..it would actually take time/effort for my character to learn. Something totally new and foreign to him :D. Would that be acceptable?

How about this: For most fighters it can be copied because the fighter is intimately familiar with their own moves. Because Kabe's in a ancestral memory rather than his own skill you can't copy it because he's not the one actually performing the moves.

Just an alternate suggestion :)

Chanlin's suggestion works for me.

Divine Abilities are not something that can be copied by someone else-- even those with a Divine Ability to be able to duplicate something after seeing it. Attempting to do so would cause the person copying it to botch the attempt somehow.

Think of it like this, and we'll use Luke and Lupo as examples. There's a fight going on, and Luke goes into "battle mode" and starts channeling his ancestral memories. However, he is effectively copying his ancestors' abilities himself. If Lupo looks on and tries to duplicate it, he's making a copy of a copy. And if you make a copy of a copy, it's never quite clear.

In other news, the re-write for Haruko is acceptable, and so is Jack Childs. We're getting a nice group going here, and I see we have another player wanting to jump in. I know there's another person coming in-- they recently signed up on the boards and their first post was going to be their character's bio.

We'll probably get going on the game itself next week.

Jay and Kabe have won me over on this *laughs* Causing me to realize that it would actually be something that would drive Lupo and give him exactly what he wanted..the ultimate challenge. Now..just what to do with the Cupid's Son and Lloth's Daughter my fevered/twisted mind came up with. *laughs*

((Short version of the two follows))

Cupid's Son - My first gay character (well male that is gay that is). Would have been a challenge. His powers of course would be based on causing people to STOP fighting. Things like "Can't we all just get along." Which would cause enemies to want to hug it out instead of fight..and the like.

Lloth's Daughter - More of a stealth/assassin character. A couple of web based powers, a stealth ability, poison .. the like.

Sometimes my mind..she is weird.

05-07-2012, 03:28 PM
Okay, I'll be working on getting this started shortly.

A few other things of note:

Passive Divine Ability
This is an ability that everyone of the Divinity-- which includes their children-- possess.

Just something to note.

I'll be putting up the game thread itself this afternoon.

Annnnnd we're off! http://customerssuck.com/board/showthread.php?t=89244

A few things to note. All of your characters know of Johnny Mercury-- well-known actor that he is-- and it's known to the Divine community that he's one of them, and one of the more active "messengers of the gods." They may have met him personally once, even, but he's not exactly friends with anyone.

Now it's time for the introductory posts! Give us all an inkling of what your character's been up to, what they recently did in their most recent mission, where they are when they get the message, and whether they're receiving a letter or a face-to-face meeting. If the latter, note that in the post, and I'll respond in kind. It will either be Johnny Mercury or another scion coming to deliver the message and tickets.

All that clear? If not, post it here, and I'll try to clarify.

I won't deny this game's not getting off to the start I'd hoped for. I know Naams has a post waiting mod approval to go up to get some character interaction going (that is, interaction NOT just with my NPCs).

In other news, some other friendly NPCs to be aware of (also added to the OP):

Selene Hoffman - Daughter of Thoth (Egyptian) - IT Consultant - Hacker Par Excellence
Paul Hays - Son of Pluto (Roman) - Socialite - Rich Idiot With No Day Job
Solomon Becker - Son of Sobek (Egyptian) - "Facilitator" - Aussie Hardcase

Hays' status as a scion is known among the Divine community. Selene and Solomon are more low-key and would only be "known" to people they've interacted with. (Selene has interacted with EJ at least once, and Solomon is known to Aiden.)

Not the same with it's player though..who wonders why if the enemy knows of our nature..why did they bother saying 'housekeeping', ringing, etc if they knew one of us would be forewarned? Meh, good thing Lupo has no clue about one of the members ability to see/hear/etc truth.

Chanlin

why did they bother saying 'housekeeping'

Because they were two big dumb bruisers who felt they had the upper hand and ,forewarned or not, they thought they were going to win.

Heh, Lupo's having no crisis at all. Just another enemy to beat, at all cost.

It was pretty much the same for Luke. You know, even before the berserk bit. Even beyond that, he'd just consider them monsters, but since his family is so steeped in the lore already, he's grown up with the mindset that there are monsters, and they need to be put down.

Kheldarson, I hope you reconsider. We all mean well with the IC recommendations that people are giving. I want to include you in everything that's going on, but it does seem like you're having Deann be a little rigid in how she wants to do things.

It sadly looks like Khel really is bowing out, and I understand her reasons for wanting to do so. We'll soldier on without her, it will just require a little re-working of things on my part.

I'll be heading out to lunch in a little while, and when I get back, I'll whip up the next GM post to get things going.

Heh. Yeah, Lupo's probably gonna love it when he finally tangles with MacBride. When it comes down to fighting, MacBride dispenses with strategy and pretty much goes for "beat them until they stop moving, then beat them to a bloody smear just to be sure."

A few notes now that we're coming up to scion-vs-scion combat.

Remember the scale of power: (going downward) Greater Titans > Titans/Divinity > Elder Titanspawn/Demigods > Titanspawn/Scions > Unawakened > Mundane Humans (Mundies).

Generally, powers are less effective if used on a higher tier, and more effective on lower tiers. It is possible for those on the next lower tier to defend against powers, but it takes preparation or a very strong will. (Ex: A mundy might be able to overcome any sort of mental influence from a scion with a strong enough will, but not against a demigod's power. Likewise, a scion could overcome a demigod's power, but not a full god's. And so on.)

Also, some more 'freebie' powers to know about.

Those with Divine heritage are more naturally resistant to injury and harm. Even an Unawakened scion is tougher than normal. It's not uncommon for there to be collateral damage when scions fight spawn as bodies are thrown through things like furniture and walls, but it's less likely to cause lacerations and contusions and the like.

That, sadly, may have to be on a case by case basis. I don't want the game to get bogged down in dice-roll mechanics to determine whose power trumps another.

Lupo WOULD be more susceptible and easily duped by Illusions, although in a fight, he'd be a lot more evenly matched.

Okay, unfortunately, it seems as though Kabe (Luke) is bowing out as well. Hence the injury he's sustained. It won't kill him, but it will take him out of the game for the foreseeable future.

Double post. I won't go into full detail on everyone on the rival team's powers, but I thought it best to give some insight as to what the NPCs you're interacting with can do. You already know Johnny and Mattieu from the OP.
---------------------
Selene Hoffman - Daughter of Thoth, the Egyptian god of knowledge. She is a very good hacker, and most of her abilities are tied up in her mental prowess. She's been gifted with something akin to eidetic memory, especially about things she's read, and is capable of concentrating on multiple tasks at once, even to the point of using each hand on two different tasks. She's impossible to sneak up on, and can tease out almost any secret you have hidden.

Solomon Becker - Son of Sobek, the Egyptian god of crocodiles. Ex-military and ex-mercenary, now a "facilitator" for the Divinity. His heritage allows him to be as much at home in the water as outside of it, and as his size implies, he's extremely strong and tough to the point that he can shrug off a lot of incoming attacks (but not to the point of bullets bouncing off of him).

Paul Hays - Son of Pluto, the Roman god of wealth. He is an off-screen ally, bankrolling the team's missions. He passes himself off as a "rich idiot with no day job," which honestly isn't far from the truth. He's smarter and more manipulative than he lets on. Don't expect him to put in an appearance, he's just there to provide funding.

Susana Ishii - Daughter of Susano-o, the Amatsu-kami of storms and the sea. She is a career criminal and carries a Japanese tsurugi (sword) that has a sort of memory-proof perception filter on it when it is sheathed. She's fast and can manipulate probability in her area to incite chaos and hex technology. She also has some storm manipulation talent. She is known to harbor a bitterness and hatred for the Divinity, explaining her siding with the Titans.

Morgan MacBride - Son of the Morrigan, the Celtic goddess of war. He's a rogue terrorist with a nihilistic and anarchistic bent. This easily explains why he would side with the Titans, who seek to cause more chaos and anarchy in the world. Extremely strong and extremely tough; some of his former IRA comrades claim he's "indestructible." He's flat-out terrifying, anyone in his presence tends to feel extreme fear. Seriously, if you see him, you should be running.

Dr. Agatha Riggs - Daughter of Heimdall, the Norse god-guardian of the Bifrost. She's an extremely intelligent multi-Ph.D. holder in biological studies, genetics, and cybernetics, and utterly amoral. Cold-hearted bitch, to say the least. Her abilities explain her intelligence, and she's got powers of perception like you wouldn't believe. Her motives are unclear.

Dr. Paul Boavista - Son of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec god of vegetation and the winds. A renowned surgeon as well as an ecologist, Dr. Boavista is a man of conviction. It is suspected that his powers are related to vegetation and healing, but it is known that Dr. Boavista is a Fate-watcher. Similarly, his motives are unknown.

Name: Fiona Black
Heritage: Daughter of Sun Wukong: The Monkey King (Chinese Celestial Bureaucracy – associated with war and chaos)
Occupation: Professional gambler, pick pocket, and petty thief.
Divine Abilities:

Focus – A wooden staff

Just a Harmless Old Man: Fiona is capable of transforming herself and her staff into any appearance she wishes. Though this does not allow her to change her gender she can appear to be unassuming and harmless or huge and frightening.
Technique of the Unseen Hand: Fiona is capable of manipulating objects of up to 5 pounds without physically touching them. Though her favored method of using this power is to animate her staff, she also has a penchant for flinging small objects.

Divine Attributes:

Strength of the Heavens: Fiona could be on the World's Strongest man competition and probably win.
Elusive Monkey: Fiona is fast and nimble and capable of dancing circles around most foes often to an infuriating degree.

(not sure if this one belongs under Attributes or Abilities)
I Know Kung-Fu: Sun Wukong was obsessed with learning mystical and martial arts to prove that he was more than just a mere Monkey. He makes sure his children are just as skilled. Fiona is a master of all martial styles of Kung-Fu though she tends to favor Drunken Boxing and the Way of the Monkey.

Description:
Roughly 5' 7'', Short Spiky Black hair dyed red and blue at the tips, blue eyes, several facial piercings, has a tattoo of a black and gold Chinese dragon that starts at her left ankle and winds its way around her torso and back ending at a roaring maw just above her breasts. Has many other smaller tattoos including Chinese characters for strength and unity on the backs of her hands, a rose on her left shoulder, and an oni mask on her right shoulder. Lean and athletic build, appears to be of Chinese American heritage. Usually dressed to show off her tattoos. Has a dark leather jacket that she is fond of.

Fiona loves to cause and get into trouble and enjoys getting into tough situations, including fights, just to see if she can get out of them again. Despite her hedonistic lifestyle she is loyal to a fault and has a sense of moral justice and honor among thieves and what not that would put most of the "fine" and "upstanding" people in the world to shame.

Backstory:
Fiona was always a problem child. The result of a one night stand her mother gave her up for adoption at a young age and she bounced around from foster home to foster home her entire life. Eventually she gave up on a normal life an took to the streets eventually finding herself in Las Vegas Nevada.

It was on her twenty-first birthday over a game of cards that she met her father who "lost" her staff to her in a bet and then later explained to her who and what she is. In answer she challenged her father to a fight and was soundly beaten. Later they both laughed the fight off over drinks and she spent the next morning's hang over wondering if she hadn't made up the whole thing. This doubt was later erased when she was tapped for her first divine mission.

Flaws: Fiona is a compulsive gambler, kleptomaniac, and generally can't go more than five minutes without causing some kind of trouble. Her manner is also crass and abrasive to most people. She simply can't understand why more people don't want to "have a good time."

Goal: Fiona doesn't really have a goal other than to survive and have fun doing it.

Now that the first battle with her has gone past, here's a bio for Susana Ishii, the Asian scion that Lupo and Fiona just fought in the Palazzo.

Name: Susana Ishii
Heritage: Daughter of Susano-o, Amatsu-kami of storms and the sea
Occupation: Criminal (assault, larceny, murder)
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- “Leaf-Cutter” - A Japanese tsurugi of incomparable sharpness. When sheathed, there is a powerful illusion spell on it, one of Truly Divine power, which makes it unable to be noticed. Once drawn, however, the illusion is broken until it is sheathed again. Most of her abilities are “muted” or lesser in potency or power when the blade is sheathed, when drawn, her powers are released.
The Freedom of Winds (Flight) - Susana is capable of flying. When Leaf-Cutter is sheathed, this is limited to short distances.
Call Down the Storm (Weather Control) - Susana is capable of controlling the weather in her vicinity, but primarily uses it to summon thunderstorms and lightning. When Leaf-Cutter is sheathed, she can summon a small rainstorm.
Like a Black Cat Crossing Your Path (Luck Manipulation) - Susana has the ability to cause things to go wrong around her. In battle, this can manifest as weapons misfiring or getting caught in their holsters. She can focus this ability on technology so it locks up, or shorts out in a way that allows her to get through locked doors, for example.

Divine Attributes:

Faster Than Winds (Speed) - Susana is capable of quite rapid movement, at least twice as fast as a mundane human.
Stronger Than Mountains (Strength/Durability) - Susana is about half again as strong as a mundane human, but she has shown incredible resilience to injury, even compared to other scions.

Description:
A lithe, small Japanese woman with her dark hair in a “hime cut” and stormy gray eyes, Susana is an intense person. She likes to cause trouble and has a practical approach to people giving her trouble: kill them. She feels herself superior to mundane humanity, and doesn’t see why she should trouble herself with their laws or morals anymore.

Backstory:
Susana Ishii was born in America to Japanese parents, but the American culture caused her to rebel against her parents’ more traditional views. Perpetually in trouble for her behavior and outbursts, she might have carried on being just an attention-seeking thrillseeker, until the day her real father entered her life.

After that, a deep bitterness filled her. Her Divine Father wanted her to help stop the Titans, but what right did he have to tell her what to do? Where had he been for all her life? She took his gifts and did what she could to avoid entering the conflict, until the notion struck her to instead take him down a peg or two by helping the Titans win. That would show him.

Flaws: Susana is a little bloodthirsty once Leaf-Cutter has been drawn. She tends to leap into fights without thinking, but will retreat when it becomes clear that the odds are not in her favor. She also loves an audience, and is more apt to back down if there isn’t one to hand.
Goal: Topple the Divinity.

06-04-2012, 12:49 PM
Name: Hassan Al-Ashraf
Heritage: Anubis - God of Death, Justice
Occupation: Antiques dealer

Divine Abilities:

Focus -- An ancient coin with a jackal imprinted on it.

A Glimpse of Beyond - The world of the living and the world of the dead rest very close to each other, just barely out of the perception of most. Depending on how fully the curtain is drawn back, the effects can range from terror to madness.
Lord of Shadows - Can speak with and command the dead. Very devout followers of another pantheon will not respond to him, and there are, of course, many horrid abominations out there that have no interest in listening and are strong enough to resist him.

Divine Attributes:

What Is Dead May Never Die - Isn't really "mortal" in the strictest sense of the word. Can suffer like anyone else, but to the best of his knowledge, death is more of a sidelining than a permanent end.

Description:
About what you'd expect from someone who lives surrounded by waking images of death and other, even worse things. Hassan is a driven and morose man - while he has a strong sense of right and wrong, it's colored by his knowledge of what lies beyond and the temporary nature of the world around him.

About 5'10" - Heavy eyebrows, shoulder length brown hair and green eyes, usually dresses in a brown jacket and a white shirt/dark vest... his fashion sense is still stuck in the 20's, and even though he's mostly adjusted to modern technology, he still can't resist carrying a pocket watch around.

Backstory:
Lord Carnavon was the first to die, but he wasn't the last.

Hassan had been there with the adventurer in the Valley of the Kings - opening the tomb that promised to deliver death on swift wings to those who disturbed it. First the lord had died... then the foolhardy railroad heir... but when death finally chose to visit him, its wings were all but swift. First, the days of pain and dread. Then the vomit - caked with maggots that felt as if they were chewing his flesh from the inside out. Soon he couldn't eat, or drink, or sleep... and when sleep did finally visit him, he woke up naked and underground, his body completely renewed.

He was raised the next day in the dead of night by a fellow excavator, who had been keeping an eye on him and revealed to him the story of his heritage and the cosmic struggle he'd been thrown in the midst of.

The years passed, trusted advisors and friends died or faded away, and he remained in the condition that he was on that muddy night in Cairo. While his true father had never spoken to him, it seemed that this son of death hadn't yet served his purpose. He eventually set up shop in New Orleans scowling for antiquities in between tasks for his divine father. The city suited him well and brimmed with history and supernatural energy.

While seeking out a knife that was rumored to be an heirloom of the Pharoahs, Hassan found himself in a fight with the Sons of the Exiled, a doomsday cult that worshiped an ancient abomination. As he attempted to destroy the monstrous thing, his powers turned inward on him, trapping him in a horror beyond life and death.

He experienced death personally - slowly suffering every horror imagined by gods and man, until eventually, he woke up again, naked in his own room in the back of the store.

That was only a year ago. He's spent the time since trying to piece together what happened - and figure out why no one tried to help him, all while keeping a grip on his dwindling sanity. And yet despite his inner turmoil, his "higher duties" still call him, as merciless and constant as ever...

Flaws: His powers have only betrayed him once, but that one time gave him the kind of PTSD that would make a Vietnam vet feel sorry for him. Minor events trigger flashbacks and disturbing memories, sometimes with tangible consequences. He was already teetering on the edge of madness, and this encounter hasn't helped him any. He gives off vibes that make him nearly impossible to hide to the supernaturally aware.

He also makes children and animals EXTREMELY nervous.

None of his abilities work on blessed/sacred grounds.

Goals: Find out what nullified his power that night, destroy the entity that tortured him, have a long sit-down with his father, stop the Titans. What are goals but distractions? A man without either is lost.

Of note!

Utgard-Loki is NOT the same thing as Loki of the Aesir.

Utgard-Loki is the ruler of the jotnar fortress of Utgard. For all intents and purposes, Utgard-Loki is the King of the Frost Jotnar.

And in case it wasn't clear, "jotnar" is the plural form of "jotun."

Additional mythological dorkery: Marvel Comics played fast and loose with mythology in the Thor comics. Laufey isn't the ruler of the jotnar, Utgarda-Loki (Loki of Utgard) is. Laufey is actually a female jotunn. Asgardian Loki is called Loki Laufeyjarson, which is highly unusual as it's a matronymic - taking the mother's name instead of the fathers.

Su ran away because she had the Heart and had to deliver it. Wasting time fighting increased the risk of losing it. She didn't want to leave, but had to.

This time she's thinking "okay fuck this, I meant to cut you in half last time, now I get the chance to do it!" While Agatha, meanwhile, sighs and despises the violence.

Oh, Fi is perfectly aware of this, she just doesn't care. She still ran instead of fighting :p

This is going to be a tad awkward if Jack's guess ends up being wrong. Funny, though.

Arm wrestling a behemoth. Lupo likes a challenge, but is not insane. He has way above average strength for a human, but is no Hercules.

Jack does, in fact, read Terry Pratchett. Has most of the Discworld novels on a shelf at home- except the illustrated version of Eric which he hasn't been looking for too terribly hard.

You know, the way to convince Lupo not to fight is NOT to tell him his opposition is unstoppable. Tell him they wear little girls dresses or 5 year olds beat them up..but not that they can't be beat. He would just test that theory.

I never expected Lupo to actually run. But MacBride's Terrifying Presence IS one of his Divine powers. It is capable of ignoring it, but it's there nonetheless.

*nods* Just like Lupo's presence is. The fear is there, make Lupo want to fight..but then again so does just about anything *laughs*. I think seeing Doritos would make Lupo want to fight

Sent you a PM..this is going to be a fight for the ages.

Oh, Jack has some good reasons for being a bit... off-kilter, as it were. It's tied in, at least partially, with his divine nature. Then there's the memory issue... nearly everything he knows about his life between the ages of 13 and 24 are things recounted to him by his mother. Sometimes he'll get flashes of information, little bits of trivia, and things more or less related to learning that he can't really remember... Jack knows how to drive a car, for instance. But he has absolutely no idea what was involved in learning it. The worst bits are tied into an incident that I might have to run by Jay- It's really quite dark, though I don't think that anyone other than Jack's mother would know about it... maybe Tlaloc or a Death deity.

Scorpodael-- Feel free to run your idea past me. Given that some of the next parts of the story will potentially be more singular, with the team split up and pursuing their own ends or things for a time, anything that gives me material to work with is good.

Divine Rivalries
Obviously, given that there are multiple Divinities around, with much overlapping in terms of each gods' respective purviews, there are always going to be heads butting. Some of them have a sort of mutual respect for one another (such as with the gods of the various Underworlds or afterlife), others tend to get more combative (most storm gods and war gods).

There also tends to be rivalries within the Divinities. This often passes down to their scions. Scions of Osiris, for instance, tend to not get on well with scions of Set. Scions of Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca often have opposing mindsets. Scions of Athena and Ares take different approaches to warfare. And so on.

Yes, they may be "cousins," of a sort, and "all in this together," but remember: Cain and Abel were brothers too.

And as for "really dark" - trust me when I say Jay, me, and Ruined at least have written our share. It's all about the dark being plot pertinent - or written so well you can enjoy it even if it is a little PWP.

Of course, I have no problem with my best friend grabbing my hair bun, pulling my head back and showing off his brand new machete by holding it to my throat, so I may be a little biased.

(Yes, it was unsharpened. SSC.)

Just a heads up to everyone that a GM Post will be incoming soon, one that should hopefully move things right along into what is essentially the conclusion of "chapter one" of our saga.

As fair warning, there may be some time-skip going on to advance things further as well. These time-skips may or may not come with a "level up" as well.

Still working on specifics.

While you wait on my next GM Post in the IC thread, here's some intel on two more members of the "Quisling" group that's working with the Titans.
-------------------------------
Name: Dr. Agatha Riggs, Ph.D
Heritage: Daughter of Heimdall, Norse god-guardian of the Bifrost.
Occupation: Scientist
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- A blade said to have been forged from a piece of Heimdall’s sword itself, it is about the size of a small knife, like a letter opener. Agatha has fashioned a wrist-mounted spring-loaded device that is usually hidden by her sleeve. (A la an Assassin’s “hidden blade”)
Like the Rainbow Bridge (Dimensional Gateways) - Agatha has the ability to open a gateway (which manifests like a hole in space ringed by rainbow light) between any location in the Nine Worlds that she has visited previously. To create this hole, Agatha must draw her blade and ‘cut’ a hole in the air to create it. Agatha has multiple locations in Midgard (Earth) already ‘mapped’, and is known to have locations in Jotunheim, Svartalfheim and Vanaheim as well. It is suspected she has mapped to the ‘starting’ ends of the Gjoll Bridge in Helheim and the Bifrost in Asgard. No information is available about any locations she has available in Niflheim or Musphelheim.
// Further details on her Divine Abilities [REDACTED] due to spoilers

Divine Attributes:

Twelfth Level Intellect (Intelligence) - Agatha Riggs is one of the smartest people on the planet and has Ph.Ds in at least three fields related to genetics and biochemistry and cybernetics. She is also capable of making great intuitive leaps and recognizing patterns.
I Saw That (Perception) - Agatha has perceptive abilities that are twice to three times greater than that of any mundane human. She can spot inconsistencies and minute variances in things.

Description:
A tall, slim woman with pale blond hair and glasses, Agatha Riggs looks the typical scientist. Any attractiveness in her, however, is quite cold and distant. She is not a people person. She is consumed by her science and will do anything to assure that her calculations are correct and that her experiments will continue and succeed.

Backstory:
Agatha Riggs was always a very intelligent woman, and astonished her teachers and professors from an early age, graduating from high school at fourteen and attending college quite young. By the age of twenty, she was working on two separate dissertations. At twenty-three, after receiving her third Ph.D. in genetics, she abruptly dropped out of sight as multiple scientific research companies offered her jobs. No one knows what happened to her.

She appears to be working in concert with the Titans, but her reasons for doing so are not yet known.

Flaws: Agatha is wholly consumed by her scientific experiments, and has very little in the way of combat experience. If faced with battle, she’s more apt to escape using her “rainbow gateway” to a safe location. Also, she is extremely protective of her experiments, and takes damage or harm to them very badly.
Goal: Unknown.
--------------------------------------------
Name: Morgan MacBride
Heritage: Son of the Morrígan, Celtic goddess of war
Occupation: “Freedom Fighter” (Terrorist)
Divine Abilities:

Focus -- Tribal Crow Head tattoo - Stretching across the back of MacBride’s shoulders, this tribal-like tattoo is the focus of MacBride’s powers. Comprised of the twisting lines of most “tribal” tattoos, it forms the shape of a crow’s head with two great wings stretching out across his shoulder blades.
The Implacable Man (Limited Invulnerability) - MacBride has been blessed by his divine parent to be unbeatable and unstoppable except in hand-to-hand combat. Often times, however, this manifests as a supernatural sort of luck. A sniper’s shot fails to hit him or gets intercepted. A car-bomb fails to go off. On those instances when these attempts do go off, MacBride has been seen to get back up or walk out unscathed. He can only be injured in melee combat, which is harder than it sounds, since MacBride is aware of this limitation and takes pains to improve himself.
// Further details on his Divine Abilities [REDACTED] due to spoilers

Divine Attributes:

Terrifying Presence (Presence) - Exactly what it says on the tin; MacBride scares people, even before they find out who he is or know of his reputation. It takes a major effort of will to overcome this ‘aura’ that he exudes. This comes in handy for keeping his followers in line.
Raw, Brute Strength (Strength) - Exactly what it says on the tin; MacBride is much stronger than the average person, capable of at least lifting and throwing a small car.

Description:
MacBride is a tall, pale Irishman with dark red hair and coal-black eyes. He has a number of tattoos-- some from his time in the IRA, some from prison sentences-- on his body as well. When he can, he almost always carries his shillelagh, a twisted length of wood about the size of a cane, which he also uses to hit people with.

Backstory:
Morgan MacBride is wanted by several law enforcement agencies across the world as a result of his acts of terrorism. He no longer has any connections to the IRA or most of its splinter fringe groups, as his views have shifted from the pro-Irish to the nihilistic and anarchistic.

Not too many details are known about his past before rising to prominence in the Troubles, but among the Divinity, it’s known that he is one of the Morrígan’s most favored children, thus explaining the power with which he has been bestowed. Despite this favor, however, he does not act in accordance with the Divinity’s will, and has been known to court the Titans and their supporters, looking for a way to perpetuate the war.

Flaws: MacBride is a brute, plain and simple. He’s not slow-witted, but he’s not hugely clever. He also relies far too much on his nigh-invulnerability and doesn’t take pains to protect himself over much.
Goal: Unleash never-ending war.

It would appear so, Naams.

Alas, it also means I never got to introduce a side-character, a scion of Hephaestus named John Smith. A happily manic mad scientist engineer.

"Why would you build something like this?"
"For fun! Well, for science. Well, for engineering, technically, but that doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as 'for science.'"
"Are you going to switch it on?"
"Oh, yes! Just needed to fix one last thing. Here we go! Allons-y!"

Why, yes, who do you think I had pictured in my mind for him?

Curious to know.

Who else would like to revive this game?

It probably wouldn't be where we left off. There's no guarantee that everyone who was involved in the last one would come back.

I'm imagining starting fresh, but with all the characters starting out at the "Unawakened" level, and in the course of an initial adventure-- probably involving trolls threatening a small town or something-- coming into their power as scions.

Any takers?

Player-characters will start out as Unawakened, but I think I'll have the PCs jump up the scale in terms of power more quickly than usual for other Scions. After all, they're more important than NPCs. ;)
