Where Are you From: Toledo, OH/Mostly Poor/Surrogate Mother
Trouble: Mom Owes a Debt to the White Court
Aspect: My Dad is in the Loony Bin

Emma Baker was born an only child to a mundane family in Toledo, OH just over 20 years ago. Her father was a dentist and her mother an aspiring nurse. An illness left her mother, Connie, unable to bear children of her own despite being completely fertile. Wanting to have children she and Emma's Father, Jack, sought help from a local fertility clinic and eventually settled on transplanting one of Connie's eggs into a surrogate. Emma was born 9 months later a healthy baby girl. Shortly after that, and for reasons unknown to Connie and Emma to this, day Jack suffered a psychotic break. Growing up as a kid whose dad was in the loony bin caused Emma no end of troubles. She was bullied often in grade school and now tends to take a dim view of anyone that makes light of mental conditions.

What Shaped You: Raised by Grandma/Mom Killed by gang Violence/Nearly Committed
Aspect: Gangs Suck!

Toledo is such a dull city all Emma could ever think about was getting the hell out of dodge asap. With her dad in a psych ward and mom putting herself through school to try and get a decent job, the day to day care of Emma fell to her Grandma Manely. The two got along famously right up until the day Connie was killed in a gangland shootout between the bloods and the cryps. It was a simple case of wrong place wrong time. After that Emma became suicidal for a time and was nearly committed herself. It was only the thought of her father that kept her from going completely off the deep end. Her Grandmother tried to see her through these times, but like most adults "She just didn't get it."

What Was Your First Adventure: College and oh Crap I'm a Wizard
Aspect: Surprise you're a Wizard

Once Emma Graduated it was all she could do to get out of Toledo. She left Toledo for Boston College. Boston would be a nice place with lots to do and see, and more importantly it wasn't Toledo. She planned to major in Art or Architecture or something else equally artsy. That plan would have gone great if not for life throwing a monkey wrench into her plans as it is wont to do. After spending a year in school and switching majors 3 times Emma's latent powers began to awaken. At the time she didn't know it was her fault, but her latent magical energy spiked blowing a fuse in her dorm and nearly burning it down. Her spike in power caught the attention of a local man named Elias Pendegraft who began to pay much more attention to her.

Of course with her being a 19 something college girl and he a creepy old man she began to get that stalker vibe from him. Eventually she asked to have a restraining order taken out against him because the crazy old man was blabbing about magic and latent talent and just wouldn't leave her alone. Late one night when returning home to her dorm she found out he wasn't just a crazy old man. At first she thought her restraining order hadn't worked but then she noticed the creepy guy following her wasn't a creepy guy at all but a creepy monster. So she did what any sane 19 something college girl would. She screamed and ran like a scare little schoolgirl. Luckily for her Elias really was violating his restraining order. Her screams drew his attention and before she knew what the hell was going on he had fried the monster to a crisp. A ghoul he called it. A Fairly weak one, and one that had been attracted to her because of her power. Though it took her time to accept he explained to her that she had a talent, magic is real, and monsters and other scary things exist and if she would like, he would become her master and mentor.

Crossed Paths: Hide and go Seek - Guest Starring Peter Salt
Aspect: This is What Losing Control Looks Like

After her first year of training with Elias, almost to the day, he came to her and said he had a special task for her. It was rare he did this sort of thing. Said her inability to grasp the basics of the real magic was rough, but she'd learned enough to be trusted to go out on her own. He'd taught her about the White Council, it's laws of Magic and she'd even met a Warden when he told them he had taken her as an apprentice. So far all she had learned to do with her powers was to make a few trinkets, which Elias insisted was impressive enough, but for her she had seen him do more. She knew she could do more and that bothered her that she couldn't figure out how it was done, and Elias never really told her. He taught her enough "to save yer life kid." But that was it. His special task was to head out to South Boston and find a guy there that was starting fires. The stipulation to the task, track him down without any of her trinkets. All she could take was a piece of chalk, her knife, and her mutli-tool.

Despite not being allowed to use magic her first issue with this task was worse. Her dislike of gangs. Elias had learned about that after they had looked into each other's souls. Something he said all Wizard's could do. He knew what happened to her mother, and he knew how she felt about gangs. He said "If you can't get past petty issues like that, then you have no business using the real stuff." And so out she went. Shlepping all over South Boston asking questions of people she loathed, and surprisingly, once they found out she wasn't a cop, most folk just told her and laughed while they were doing it. Eventually she found herself down at The Five-Leaf Clover and that's when she saw Peter for the first time. And Somehow she knew it was him. She could feel the same vibe from him that she got from Elias. Granted it wasn't nearly as strong, but she knew he could use magic too and she knew now why Elias sent her after him. Of course in her wonder and amazement at this realization he had taken the time to slip away. She cursed herself but stopped and remembered something Elias used to say when he first began teaching her, "Magic takes brains kid. There isn't any amount of magic that will help you if you can't think for yourself. Despite fairy tales and other wonderful stories, magic is not a fix all. It's a tool, just like a knife, or a screw driver. All magic has a purpose and if you try to use it for something else it just won't work the way you want." She knew he meant for her to hone her ability to think problems through this way. So now her task was to figure out where this man would go. It didn't take long, but in his attempts to shake her off he set a car on fire... a freakin CAR! And he used that distraction to get away... again. Eventually though she did catch up to him and she told him who she was and why she was after him. She laid it all out, the council, the seven laws all of it except Elias.

She left Peter to himself after that with a warning to keep the laws of magic in mind or else someone other than her would be back. Once she was alone she called Elias to come and get her. While she waited for him, all she could think about was how easily and non-nonchalantly Peter has set that car on fire. And although to him he probably had firm control on what he could do, to her, that was the scariest thing she had seen anyone do with magic. Sure Elias had roasted a monster to death right in front of her, but that was different. That was to save her life. Peter had done what he did just because he could and it let him get away from her. What if she could do that... when she learned how anyway. Would learning to use that kind of magic maker her so callous? She still hasn't told Elias that she figured out the secondary aspect to his lesson, and she isn't sure if she ever will share her new secret fear with him.

Also Starring: Animal, Vegetable, Mineral and Monster - Guest Starring Randall Williams
Aspect: I Guess it Could be Worse

One of Elias's more sadistic, in her opinion, methods of training is to send Emma out to the public library to do research. Of course this isn't just any research. This involves going out and asking about books on various types of monsters. The goal of the training is to "Think for one's self" as he would put it. That simply meant trying to weed out the truth from the plausible, the, crap and the outright wrong. This was made all the more difficult by the fact that the librarian lady seemed to be in on the joke. She never batted an eye when Emma would come in and ask for all manner of strange books. In fact the time she asked about Vampires, instead of asking "Blake, Stoker, or Meyer" with a slight scoff at the end like she usually did she just gave her a section number to loook at with a wink.

So when one particular day the topic turned out to be ghosts Emma just sighed, and nodded, and headed off to the library as usual. "Hi Christina." She said as she approached the main desk. And it had to be Christina, woe betide anyone who said Chris, Tina, or any other shortening of the name. "Hello dear. What's the monster of the week today?" Emma gave a genuine smile. Whatever else you might say about the library lady, Emma liked her. "Ghosts." Christina rattled of a section number without missing a beat and pointed for Emma's benefit. "Oh and it's on the second floor dear." As Emma headed off Christina called out "Better take the stairs dear, wouldn't want you getting stuck." As Emma headed to the stairwell she swore Christina had just chuckled.

So the next few hours found Emma dragging out thick books on spirits, wraiths, ghosts, geists, poltergeists and all other manner of woojie woojie dead things. She had a habit of speaking out loud while lost in thought which on this particular day happened to attract the attention of another of the library's patrons. "Huh... burn the bones to dispel a ghost. I don't know... seems legit." She said to no one. From behind her she heard a scoff, "Total crap." She turned to look at the man who had spoken and found herself face to face, and much to her dismay, eye to eye with Randall Williams. She felt herself get pulled into a soulgaze almost immediately. (we can work out the details of what they each saw later) She almost reflexively found herself whispering after "Oh you poor bastard..." she blushed... "I mean... um..." Of course the man's immediate reaction was to ask "What the hell just happened." She did her best to explain what a soulgaze was and thought for sure he would call her loony. Instead the man he seemed more interested in her topic of study than anything else and the two spent the next hour chatting about ghosts and the like far more comfortably than any two sane people had a right to be. Afterward they parted ways, but not before Emma started to get the sense that maybe, just maybe, some people had it worse off than she did.

Here is a dice rolling utility I suggest we use when it becomes relevant.

It allows you to put in a Name, Comment, and Code. Anyone who puts in the same code can see the last 100 rolls that were made by entering the same code and rolling or clicking "show history"

I suggest the code CSDFRPG (customers suck, dresden files rpg) - The code is case sensitive. (i've made a few example rolls using this code if you want to check it out)

The first box is where you enter the die roll which for us will always be 4dF+x where X is the relevant skill mod. It assumes +0 if no plus is put.

Character: Peter Salt
Player: Jay 2K Winger
Template: Focused Practitioner (Pyromancer)

Physical Description: About 6'3", 260 pounds or so, fairly bulky of build. Peter has short dark hair and intense dark eyes. He has a tendency to wear t-shirts, often sports-related (he's a huge Red Sox fan) and a black leather jacket, with blue jeans and sneakers.

Phase One: Down and Dirty South Boston Lad
Peter was born in South Boston, and from an early age, things never were easy. Marilyn and David Salt both had to take jobs in order to make ends meet, and Peter, left to his own devices, inevitably got into trouble. From falling in with the gangs, the Marine Park Breakers, in particular, to starting fires in trashbins and back alleys, Peter never put much stock into schooling, cruising along with just enough to keep getting passed up to the next grade.

Peter got on well with the Breakers, tangling with various small-time gangs to keep his neighborhood safe. This eventually got him to butt heads with Liam O'Doole and the Saints, but they recognized a kind of kinship in one another. Sure, they had their differences and tended to scrap with each other as much as anyone else, but they all had an extreme dislike for the Russian Mob trying to take over the neighborhood. Whether it's the Breakers, the Saints, or one of the other gangs, Peter's got a selection of friends that'll gladly help him put foot to backside if it'll keep Konstantin Karkov out of South Boston.

Phase Two: Been In The (Gang) Wars, Ma

Of course, while the gangs have common enemies in Karkov's Mafiya, they have their own little turf wars with some regularity. Someone from the Breakers would break the arm of a Beckler Ave gang member, which would prompt Beckler Ave to smash up a Breaker's car. The Breakers would trash the store of a Beckler Ave notable, which would have the side effect of pissing off the Deadly Lane Boys. Invariably, Peter found himself caught up in most of these conflicts, helping lob firebombs around and otherwise being the Breakers' resident "firebug."

Of course, what none of them knew, and what Peter tried to keep them from finding out, was that sometimes he didn't need matches or to flick his lighter to get the fires to start. He experimented, in disused warehouses and secluded parts of Marine Park, with fuels and sparks and similar, and found he could get the fires to dance for him. As cool as it was, he knew instinctively that this was something to keep secret.

If it wasn't the perpetual gang trouble, then Peter wound up running afoul of the law. He's had his scrapes with the Boston PD in the past, for the fights and brawls of course, as well as B&E and on suspicion of arson. And of course, his family didn't much care for the crowd he ran with, neither his parents nor his extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Phase Three: We Don't Need No Drugs Here

Although Peter could make the flames dance, he had no inkling that there was anything more to it. That there was anything more to the world than the Have's (all them posh nancies at "Haavud" and whatnot, and greedy bastards like Karkov) and the Have-Not's (himself and the gangs). Life sucks for a lot of people, sure, and there's nothing wrong with drowning your sorrows and lamenting the way of the world down at the Five-Leaf Clover or that Biers place, but Peter drew the line at drugs. Anything stronger than cigarettes or marijuana (because seriously, what was the harm with that stuff) set his temper to blazing. And when his temper sets to blazing, stuff tends to burn.

The gangs had found out about a drugs lab down by Sharon's Park-- just over I-93 in Dorchester-- where the Ivans were cooking up heroin, or meth, or some other bad shit that was getting peddled to kids in South Boston. Peter volunteered to go take care of it, and went in at night, when it was less likely to have people in it. There were some, but he "persuaded" the one or two guards he found to get out of there. (Smashing one of them in the kneecap with his trusty baseball hat may have helped.) They weren't the only security, however, as Peter found himself face to face with a particularly tougher man, who just seemed to laugh off Peter's attempts at hurting him. At least until Peter, his blood up, flung a fireball in his face. The man's skin burned away to reveal the monstrous visage of a Red Court vampire, and it was distracted enough by this to then get hammered back over a table of flammable material, setting the table and the vampire on fire.

Peter made sure it wouldn't get up by smashing it over and over with his bat until it stopped moving, then got out of the building as it caught fire and burned down. He still has some nightmares about that creature's face, but he's not sorry about what he did to it. At first, he almost chalked it up to a contact high, but something-- maybe the song of the fire in his blood-- told him otherwise. He knows what he saw, and he knows it was real.

Phase Four: I Have Enough Trouble - guest starring Emma Baker

After the drugs lab fire, Peter was a lot more conscious of people watching him. He left out the vampire monster in his recap to the gangs, and even the mundane authorities chalked up the strange, charred animal carcass found in the burned-down building to a guard dog from the mob. The fire brought the attention of the White Council of Magic to Peter Salt's neighborhood, though. He noticed some college girl scoping him out, and not in the usual "horny college chick" way. He got enough of a bad vibe off of her that he started trying to avoid her. When she kept pursuing him, however, Peter caused a car to catch fire and used her distraction by the conflagration to make his escape.

Eventually, however, he did run across that college chick again, and this time there was no way he could slip away without possibly hurting other people with the flames. Her name was Emma Baker. She told him about magic, monsters, and the White Council of Magic-- and about the Laws of Magic, in particular the part about "Thou Shalt Not Kill." Peter, now he knew she was representing another aspect of authority, quickly tuned her out. He would do what he needed to do to keep South Boston safe.

Phase Five: Hey, Hey, Do That Jedi Thing - guest starring Jad Frost

One night down at the Five-Leaf Clover, Peter met Jad Frost, a gang member on the outs after a recent stretch "up Tufts-way" (i.e. the psych ward). Though most of the gangs had shunned Jad, a few of the lads-- including Peter-- were a little more welcoming. Peter, still angry after his run-in with Emma and his learning of the Laws, had his blood up and was eager to go commit some violence. Fortunately for him, Liam had heard of a "weird creep" stalking around Thomas Park, and Peter volunteered to go run him off. Jad, looking to earn back some respect, went with him.

They split up a bit in Thomas Park, but both ran across the "weird creep" about the same time. Said "creep" turned out to be a ghoul. Peter, despite a swing from his baseball bat that would have sent a baseball right over the Green Monster, ended up getting swatted aside by the ghoul, who tried to run-- and ran straight into a rock thrown straight in its face by Jad's kinetomancy. Jad kept it off-balance with another rock throw, just long enough for a furious Peter to hit it with a fireball. The ghoul was thoroughly "burninated," and the two ghoul-killers had found a kindred spirit of sorts, a kinetomancer meeting a pyromancer.

Yesss, one of us, one of us!

Ahem. You'd be better off if you had the Dresden Files RPG sourcebooks (Your Story and Our World) so you could pick an appropriate template for your character. But I/we can help.

What kind of character you lookin' to play, Mytical?

04-28-2013, 08:58 PM
Or, you can PM the GM...

But if you want in, Myt, I got no problem. I just need to know the template.

04-28-2013, 10:25 PM
I'd be willing to help out as well :)

You can snag the PDF versions of both books for fairly cheap, $20 total on amazon. Or if you prefer drivethru rpg has both hard copy books as a bundle for $45 which is pretty good price wise.

Can I vote we name our campaign "Shippin' Up to Boston"?

04-29-2013, 12:38 AM
I'm keeping it kinda generic until I get a plot line figured out.

Which is one of tonight's projects to keep my mind busy at work.

Oh I'll just post it for Jay :p

Enjoy the game. Happy horrors!

Well see here is the thing, money is virtually non existent right now, so even the $20 is outta my reach for a little (just had to get a car because old one died), so I kinda have no clue what is even possible. I have zero knowledge of the game. At all. None. Zero. Zilch.

Finally getting these down - that third one could turn into a rather lengthy story if I find the time to write it.

Where You're From
Aspect: Snubbed Genius (in his opinion, at least)

Despite always being a bright child, Randall always seemed somewhat troubled. His numerous quirks worsened as he aged, and lead to no end of trouble for him in school and his personal life. He personally has always felt everyone should have gotten over it and let him do what he wanted.

What Shaped You
Aspect: It's Not Paranoia If...

As Randall made his way through school and got into a major university, it was always a question whether he'd be breezing through on scholarships, or finally crack and let the doctors settle on a diagnosis. Despite medication, psychiatry, and theories about a complex form of schizophrenia, Randall was more interested in the growing hints that he wasn't crazy, just more perceptive than others.

What Was Your First Adventure
Aspect: Damn Incorporeal Nuisance

Randall was doing his best to keep his head straight, ignore the voices, visions, and vaguely threatening sensations - and definitely the occasional prediction of doom that was inevitably chalked up to paranoid fantasy (not that anyone ever bothered to check his notes after the fact) - to focus on his schoolwork. It was even working. Up until he was visited by the late victim of a campus stalker, who demanded his help. Constantly. And generally made life difficult until he accepted. To make a long story short, helping those in need does wonders for one's sense of self; but the fights, police investigations, psychiatrist visits, interruption of studies, unexcused absences, and general disruption of life involved isn't quite so good for one's academic career. So school didn't exactly pan out. Oh, and despite getting revenge for her death and all that, Reilly the ghost still isn't moving on, instead apparently favoring his company. Joy.

Suggestions for our crossover stories, guys?

What I have so far... ((And yes I thought the 'Gang Sucks' and this background for my character could prove interesting. As he was in a gang, and another of the characters dislikes gangs :D ))

Channeling (Spirit) (-2) : Kinetic Energy (Moving things (organic and inorganic) with his mind)

Where Are you From: Cincinnati Oh, Homeless, No Family
Trouble: It's all in his mind.
Aspect: Part of the Pack.
He ran away from a foster home after being placed there when his family was killed in a boat accident. He took up with a gang, and has a 'rap sheet' as long as his arm. Breaking and entering, theft, and the like.He has not had a family since 13, and is seriously troubled and rebellious. He finds it hard to trust anybody. He was part of a gang for awhile, but they abandoned him when his 'weirdness' began.

When his powers activate, he can get splitting headaches. His powers are all mental based, and he thinks he is going crazy. If he is not really concentrating it can get out of his control, sending objects and even people flying. Right now he gets drained if using his abilities. Takes as much effort to lift a book with his mind as it would to physically lift and carry it. (In other words he can only lift as much with his mind as he could physically lift, and he gets just as tired as he would if doing it physically). While he was part of the gang, he learned a few things. Like how to hotwire a car, pick locks, how to get around security systems. He was a quick learner. He is skilled at breaking the law, not so much in following it. Now he can open a lock with his mind, if it is not a complex one.

Gang Colors
He would have done anything for the gang, including kill if they asked. To him they were his only family, and several times he went to jail for something one of the other members did. However, as soon as his powers manifested themselves, the gang dropped him like a bad habit. Consequently he has trouble trusting anybody. He is still feeling loyal to them, despite the fact they are not loyal to him.

I've got a splitting Headache
During an attempted heist of some artwork in a museum, his power first manifested itself, and was out of his control. Objects started flying around the room, and set off the alarm, and the gang beat it post haste, leaving him with a splitting headache, facing serious trouble, and just plain out of luck... currently a guest in a mental ward..and even if he can get out..the police will keep an eye on him as he is considered a delinquent.

Into the Fire - guest starring Peter Salt

One night down at the Five-Leaf Clover, after being sprung from the loony bin Jad met Peter Salt. Although he didn't really trust this Peter guy, since he didn't trust anybody right now, he decided to give it a go. Besides, he needed to blow off some steam after being pinched for the museum job. Some good mindless destruction might just do the trick.

They split up a bit in Thomas Park, but both ran across the "weird creep" about the same time. Said "creep" turned out to be a ghoul. Out of pure fear and instinct Jad had thrown up his hands to protect his face, and suddenly rocks started to pelt the Ghoul. Jad kept it off-balance with another rock throw, just long enough for a furious Peter to hit it with a fireball. The ghoul was thoroughly "burninated," and the two ghoul-killers had found a kindred spirit of sorts, a kinetomancer meeting a pyromancer. Jad's power still sort of weirded him out, but he thought this Peter guy's power was awesome. For a bit he thought of all the mischief the two could do, if Jad could over come his hesitancy to use his power, but thought that most likely Peter could do it on his own. Pictures of fire shaped in the form of tigers, dragons, or such still wormed the way into his mind.

Also Starring - Guest Starring Randall Williams
Aspect: Some things are better off staying secret.

Jad had thought moving things with his mind was scary enough, he couldn't have even imagined having some invisible girl talking to him. He believed the other guy though. Heck, the other person would probably think HE was crazy if he started talking about being able to lift up people or objects with his mind. So it was easier to talk about the invisible girl. Much, much easier.

04-29-2013, 07:20 AM
We may need to hold off on finishing the meets until we get My settled. Which would be faster if I weren't at work. Whee.

04-29-2013, 07:55 AM
I added Emma's repertoire of enchanted items to her sheet. Reading more about enchanted items they are essentially rote spells on a stick. The effect is predetermined and no rolls for control are needed, but if the effect requires aiming (such as the fire wand) a roll, usually discipline, is used to aim it.

04-29-2013, 09:47 AM
Well see here is the thing, money is virtually non existent right now, so even the $20 is outta my reach for a little (just had to get a car because old one died), so I kinda have no clue what is even possible. I have zero knowledge of the game. At all. None. Zero. Zilch.

Pop me a PM with your email. I can help ;)

Edit, actually, I forgot I had a Dropbox set up. Gave you a link in your PMs that should help.

04-29-2013, 06:06 PM
Still fleshing out each aspect (need much more to make it even somewhat decent), still no clue about skills/powers, etc..but working that out slowly also. He's starting to take shape though.

Pop me a PM with your email. I can help ;)

Edit, actually, I forgot I had a Dropbox set up. Gave you a link in your PMs that should help.

I have one of the books now. So things are starting to shape up, but I am having trouble understanding the system. ((Because my illness causes confusion and memory issues)). I know his skills would be in like picking locks, security systems (as in how to get around them), and his powers would be based on Kinetic energy...but how to put that in the proper form is escaping me at this time.

04-29-2013, 06:21 PM

Skills: Check page 66 for a chart that breaks down how many skills you can have at our power level (we are using 20 skill points)

Page 120 has a listing of Skills.

For what you are doing you will want Discipline, Conviction, and Endurance and then whatever other skills you want.

Focused Practitioner has to take Channeling or Ritual. You will want Channeling for the concept you told me about. Channeling lets you pick one Element (Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Spirit (Force)) you are able to manipulate with magic.

Air or Earth will let you toss lightning (Air if you want to call it down out of the sky, Earth if you want to use yourself as a lightning rod and hurl it at people)

Spirit(Force) Will get you your Telekinetic ability.

04-29-2013, 06:33 PM
So Spirit it is. Johnny B like would be cool, but I like Flo better. ((Misfits of science))

In my head, Peter Salt has a pronounced Southie accent (think like Mark Wahlberg in "The Departed" and you'll have a good idea) and swears like crazy.

(bashes in a ghoul's skull) "FENWAY PAHK, MOTHAHFUCKAH!"

Also, I picked up a sketch pad and just drew a pic of Peter. Bulky build, thick jaw, short dark hair, perpetual scowl. "Da fuck're you lookin' at?"

04-29-2013, 10:58 PM
I mainly know Randall isn't local. Thinking he might be from Virginia, since I'm vaguely familiar with it but it's not as rural as WV.

As far as accents go...

His opinion on the matter: "It's obvious I'm not from Boston. I can pronounce the letter 'R'."

04-29-2013, 11:00 PM
So looks like Myt is pretty much done. How about Chanlin and Kabe do their connect, Jay and Myt can do a connect, and then Kabe and Myt?

That work for everybody?

04-30-2013, 12:19 AM
I figure with myt's weirdness and ghostlike powers it would make sense if Kabe went to check him out.

04-30-2013, 01:25 AM
Resent you the link Myt ;p Don't delete it!

It has some other items (such as a character sheet, and some other things) that may be useful.

04-30-2013, 01:51 AM
Jay and I now have a connect, and I am up for whatever for the second connect :)

Jay 2K Winger
04-30-2013, 01:56 AM
Jay and I now have a connect, and I am up for whatever for the second connect :)

Yup, and Peter's sheet's been updated to reflect it

04-30-2013, 03:03 AM
Heh sorry had to make the story my own for my part :p. Also, added my final stunt. Figure if he can take it apart, he should be able to put it together again if needed.

04-30-2013, 04:26 AM
I may be taking a position at a Summer Camp. It won't completely kill my ability to post, but I won't have internet access whenever I want it. I'll let ya'all know if I actually get the position. It'll only be for 8 weeks starting in June if I do end up getting it.

04-30-2013, 05:04 AM
Heather's phone completely locked up, so she won't be able to post in or view the thread at work for the night.

PM me if you have any ideas for our connections?

04-30-2013, 05:19 AM
I have a really simple idea for us Kabe.

I figure sometime during her apprenticeship that Elias would send Emma to the Library to do some legwork in figuring out if she can weed out what lore is real from what lore is totally bupkis.

The two could bump into each other at the Boston Library. The topic Emma is researching that day just happens to be ghosts which would of course catch Randall's attention. Heck they could even accidentally Soul Gaze one another :p

04-30-2013, 05:27 AM
You guys might try this: http://roll20.net/

You'll probably have to use another prog to roll fate dice (I don't think it's supported, never checked), but just about everything else can be done through that if you want to play live. This link reviews it a bit: http://www.penny-arcade.com/report/article/roll20-is-tabletop-roleplaying-with-customizable-maps-a-chat-log-and-drag-a

04-30-2013, 05:30 AM
I basically need a reason that Jad got out of the asylum *laughs*. So..whoever has some pull with things like that would be the best connection :D

As for fate dice, you can use d6. 1-2=+ 3-4=Null 5-6= -

04-30-2013, 05:53 AM
True...I always forget about that hehe.

04-30-2013, 05:58 AM
Chanlin, don't worry about lack of posting...it'll just blend into my due date XD

Came home early cuz nothing to do at work and will have to be up early to go to the store to try and get it fixed. So if we can get all the background done before I head to bed I'll type up the start of the IC thread. Or do it tomorrow sometime.

04-30-2013, 06:11 AM
As for a connection, Ghosts are always hanging around insane Asylums. So I figure that would make a good possible connection.

Could also be some of the folks at the Asylum are only insane because a ghost has been screwing with their head. Randall comes by to see what he can do about it and for one reason or another realizes Jad isn't actually insane.

04-30-2013, 06:16 AM
Yup, and Peter's sheet's been updated to reflect it

Just commenting, Phase 5 should be the last. You end up with 6 aspects total, trouble + 5 from background phases.

04-30-2013, 01:24 PM
So Jay, your character won't know Kabe's, and Chanlin's won't know Myt's as we start.

Those'll be some fun introductions....

04-30-2013, 02:54 PM
Was just rechecking the soulgazes in the series and came across a link Myt might find helpful :)

EDIT: Also I wrote up a possible connection for Kabe's character and mine, updated my character's bio with it. See what you think Kabe and if it doesn't work we can run with something else. I ran with the bumping into each other at the Library idea.

04-30-2013, 05:43 PM
Since Chanlin has his also staring and crossed paths..I think I have a way mine and Kabe's character crossed paths.

Kabe seems to have been in and out of psychiatrist offices..they could have met there while Jad was a guest at the mental institution.

05-01-2013, 02:07 AM
In my experience, there's not much overlap between a full-on institution and a psychiatrist's office. Maybe Jad was visiting a Psychiatrist as a sort of outpatient care/parole check-in, and Randall had been forced into a visit again as well?

And yours looks good to me, Chanlin. I'll write it up from Randall's POV once Myt and I have one.

05-01-2013, 04:04 AM
Sounds good to me. I am sure that he would have to have some sort of check in for his parole. :) I'll PM you something here real soon I am working on.

Jay 2K Winger
05-02-2013, 07:55 PM
So Emma and Peter's character sheets are basically done. Where do Randall and Jad stand?

05-02-2013, 07:56 PM
Behind a brick wall. *sighs* My crossover just is not progressing. Maybe Kabe will have more luck coming up with something.

05-02-2013, 10:14 PM
He's coming home for lunch. I'll poke him.

Either way, I'll try to post up a rough start to our adventure tonight...and let you guys fill in how you heard about.

Assuming I don't fall asleep again XD

05-02-2013, 11:53 PM
Meh who needs sleep ? :p

05-03-2013, 01:13 AM
Meh who needs sleep ? :p

The pregnant woman who works night and has a very active baby apparently? XD

I swear, he's trying to just keep me awake...

Anyway, Kabe's going to look at crossover story tonight, but I'm gonna go ahead and get the actual RP started. Look for it within the hour.

05-03-2013, 02:00 AM
Okay, background set, I'll leave it to you guys to set up how you heard about this whole mess (Christina knows a couple of the kids so heard it from them; Romero, being the ghost expert, collects stories about this place and likes sharing; and it's just general scuttlebutt around town as some adults and college kids think it's hilarious).

I'll come back in and describe the actual place after you get a chance to meet up.

05-03-2013, 03:49 AM
Sleep's overrated.
... a completely inadequate substitute for caffeine ...

05-03-2013, 05:53 AM
Finally doing the crossovers. And as for Randall's actual physical description - just think Donnie Darko (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ph8V052fCNE/TIltLq1nwwI/AAAAAAAAJxc/rv1jQGEQk40/s1600/Donnie+Darko.jpg) in a hoodie.

Crossed Paths - Guest Starring Emma Baker
Aspect: I need to look into this...

Having distracted Reilly long enough to get some work of his own done, Randall set out for his usual haunts in the library. And reminded himself to think of a better way to phrase that in the future before Christina informed him he might have company today. He was apprehensive, at first, considering the usual derision and explanations this sort of thing usually resulted in, but soon found his impromptu study partner to have at least some interest in the matter. Well, Sparkles had said something about other practitioners in the area. Of course, he just had to throw in his two cents on whatever book it was she'd found, which startled her enough to look up at him - and into his eyes. (Yeah, still need to work this out.) After demanding an explanation for exactly what had just happened, at least the evening resulted in a decent conversation where nobody called him crazy. Of course, now he was that much more curious about some other locals he'd met and gotten a funny feeling from...

Also Starring - Guest Starring Jad Frost
Aspect: Some things are better off staying secret.

Turns out you ask the wrong sort of questions to the wrong sort of people - not to mention get involved in the wrong sort of police investigations regarding the wrong sort of vampires... Well, any vampires, he supposed. Regardless, the end result seemed to always be a psychiatrist. He did his best to tune Reilly out for most of the waiting room time, as well. But the ghost was nothing if not persistent. And irritating. Either way, eventually he found himself doing his best to respond to her in ways that others wouldn't notice. Of course, someone did. Someone always did. That's how it worked. Well, at least when the punkish guy asked him who he was talking to, his reply of "This annoying girl who's haunting me" got him a curious response rather than the expected skepticism.

It also got Reilly to sulk enough to shut up for a while, too, so that was nice.

Either way, the two traded their stories, and Randall at least came away with a freshly-reinforced opinion that few could be trusted with the things he saw and knew. And that "few" excluded the entire mental health profession.

05-03-2013, 06:42 AM
Hey, Jay, out of curiosity, how long since Peter's last drink/how well does he hold his alcohol?

05-03-2013, 06:43 AM
And with my post, we'll see who's read the same fanfics as me.

05-03-2013, 07:36 AM

I also edited my last crossover slightly to incorporate how you wrote up yours Kabe.

05-03-2013, 08:02 AM
Hey, Jay, out of curiosity, how long since Peter's last drink/how well does he hold his alcohol?

It takes Peter at least two drinks to get buzzed, but he's a long-practiced drinker, so... let's call it two hours from buzzed to sober?

05-03-2013, 08:04 AM
Okay. So willing to tack on a temporary Buzzed aspect? It'll wear off by the meat of the adventure, but will affect you during the lead up.

05-03-2013, 08:06 AM
And "Shut up, Rei." is said in basically the exact same tone as "Shut up, Nail." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyN7rPbHybk)

05-03-2013, 05:02 PM
Jad is going to be a challenging roleplay. He is going to be very reluctant to use his power, and always doing things he shouldn't. The good news is, he actually enjoys going places he shouldn't and doing things people think he shouldn't. Likes the challenge. More apt to use his power if told "You can't/shouldn't" then any other time.

05-03-2013, 06:31 PM
Something I thought of that may not have been evident in the RPG book depending on how much ya read Myt.

Will be important to Role Play. In the Dresden series, depending on how powerful a practitioner is they cause complex machines near them to fritz out. The books put it as anything made after World War II tends to fail around most Wizards while smaller talents don't seem to be bothered by the phenomenon as much. With focused practitioners like ours it should be somewhere in the middle of the road. With the 3 of us together I figure it will be like having a full fledged Wizard around.

And of course Jad and Peter may or may not be aware of the phenomenon, or they may not realize they are the center of it.

05-03-2013, 06:40 PM
I've also been thinking about an allowance on that based on some of Billy's musings in the RPG. What if a bit of it is the lack of belief? An older practitioner wouldn't trust the tech and passes it on to the apprentice. But younger unmentored practitioners might have more leeway.

05-03-2013, 10:07 PM
And "Shut up, Rei." is said in basically the exact same tone as "Shut up, Nail." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyN7rPbHybk)

I got bored at work.

So I drew something.

I may re-do something like this later once I have a better idea of what everyone looks like. (Apart from Peter, he's pretty accurate.)

05-08-2013, 04:00 AM
That's loads better than I can draw. I approve :)

On a side note, I got the summer camp job. I'll be limited in my capability to post in June and July.

05-08-2013, 04:14 AM
I approve too :D

Congrats on the job, Chanlin. We'll work something out for that.

Oh, and Myt, can I get a roll on how your "push" goes?

05-08-2013, 05:41 AM
Um ... sure if you can tell me how? :) (I know I roll d6 with 1-2 = + etc. Not how many to roll, or how to tell if it is good or not.

05-08-2013, 05:56 AM
Chanlin's explanation (http://www.customerssuck.com/board/showpost.php?p=1136008&postcount=3) here works for me. The +X would be your modifier.

Tell me the number and I then figure out how many shifts you generate. (That's really what I need.)

05-08-2013, 06:19 AM
That is the problem, I don't know how to figure out my modifier. However, with 4df I balanced out at 0.

05-08-2013, 06:38 AM
Note to self: consolidate character sheets for easier accessibility.

For channeling a spell (which you're basically doing), you need to decide how much power you want to put into it based on what you're doing and your Conviction. So you'll be taking one mental stress from doing this.

To find out how successful you are, it's the roll plus your Discipline. In your case, that's a Good so you'd add 3 to the roll. So you have +3 against the difficulty of opening this door.

05-08-2013, 06:40 AM
Your skill mods Myt

+1 Alertness Deceit
+2 Investigation Craftsmanship
+3 Discipline Burglary
+4 Conviction, Endurance

There is a really long explanation of spell casting in the book. The short version is thus.

1: Determine the effect (attack, block, maneuver) - Maneuver is when you're doing something creative like using Earth to make yourself a lightning rod and channel electricity. Maneuvers may add to the difficulty of the roll.

2: Determine how much power your going to use. Represent this as a number. This is the target you need to hit on a Discipline roll.

3: Roll the dice, add your discipline skill. If you miss the target roll you failed to control the power of the spell and something bad happens (either backlash, or consequences. Backlash hits you, consequences hit the environment) If you hit the target number exact you succeed. Any amount over generates positive shifts.

The roll gives you your results and then the Story Teller (GM) tells us what happens.

There are all sorts of other modifiers, such as any casting implements you have or any specialties or stunts you might have, or if you spend fate to invoke one of your aspects. But the above is how it will go 90% of the time.

05-08-2013, 06:42 AM
Argh. When I rerolled with the bonus got 3 negatives so it still balanced to zero. Don't think that is going to do it. *laughs*

((The roll is under 'mine' on the link Chanlin provided))

05-10-2013, 02:49 AM
Training for the camp is this weekend starting tomorrow morning, so I'ma be away until late Sunday afternoon.

05-10-2013, 05:39 AM
And if Kheldarson wants it, or if anyone else is particularly interested, I can work up a list of exactly what Randall totes around with him in that bag.

05-14-2013, 02:54 AM
So I missed that the training program I'm at for the summer camp is until Friday not Sunday. I will try to post if I can but the classes are fairly time consuming.

05-15-2013, 12:32 AM
Sorry I haven't been posting guys. My muse finally showed up for my personal writing and it won't let go now.

There are worse problems, yeah?

But getting something up before I go to work.

05-15-2013, 04:07 AM
I have a similar excuse, except she's writing a proper novel and I'm writing My Little Pony fanfiction.

One of us may have a better justification than the other.

Hint: It's me. Ponies are awesome.

05-19-2013, 06:17 PM
I'm back home until June 5 when the main camp begins and lasts until August 3.

05-26-2013, 08:44 PM
So apparently even though I'm subscribed to the IC thread it isn't telling me every time there is a new post :(

05-30-2013, 04:06 AM
I only get informed on my phone. And sorry for the radio silence; we were out of town this weekend and apparently 11 hour sleep cycles are necessary at the moment.

05-31-2013, 12:48 AM
And...give me a bit to come up with something suitably creepy for the Sight. The only feedback I get from the module is "let them have it"

Owe you guys a massive apology. I didn't mean to be off my rocker this long on getting back to this.

I can only offer that third trimester pregnancy + night shift + awkward appointment times = suck. (I literally woke up a half hour ago from sheer exhaustion.)

I'm also going to apologize for the extreme lack of creepy in the next post; I suck at it, but we need an update, yeah?

06-23-2013, 10:13 PM
So got responses on the last update from Chanlin and Kabe...

Myt and Jay, are you still in?

Or are we done now?

06-24-2013, 02:11 AM
I am still in :). Give me a bit and I will have something up. Just remember Jad is not a people person, and thinks this spirit thing is just rumors.

06-30-2013, 05:18 PM
If I rolled correctly (sorry still trying to figure out how to do these rolls) I come out with 1.

Jay 2K Winger
06-30-2013, 06:18 PM
If I'm reading the dice-roll mechanics right, we roll 4d6. 1s and 2s equal [-], 3s and 4s equal [_], and 5s and 6s equal [+].

For instance, my roll was: 3-6-1-5 --> [_]-[+]-[-]-[+] --> which totals up to +1.

As long as we do better than -1 on the roll, I think we pass.

Screenshot of my roll:

06-30-2013, 11:44 PM

Type in 4dF + whatever your modifier is with the code CSDFRPG to see where your roll is in comparison to mine. It also gives you a direct Fate roll.

07-01-2013, 02:03 AM
And in this case the + would be our Mental stat?

07-01-2013, 03:06 AM
Your Conviction, yes.

07-01-2013, 04:55 AM
Ok. :) That is the trouble I am having with the rolls. What bonus to apply. Sorry, just can't seem to grasp the concept. Rerolled with conviction, came out with a roll of 3. Which should be pretty good.

07-01-2013, 05:03 AM
That's okay. And 3 is above -1 so you're clear :)

Jay 2K Winger
07-01-2013, 06:54 AM
I like that site. I re-rolled using it, 4dF+3 = (0 0 + -) + 3 = 3

I pass.

07-01-2013, 09:39 AM
So no one's failed yet...so how do your characters respond? Didn't freak you out but it's still cold

07-02-2013, 03:25 AM
At least I am assuming even Jad knows what a cold spot means at least

I'd be interested in joining you all, but I have no idea how you'd fit in a mundane who hunts werewolves... since having a run-in with the Fool Moon gang from the book of the same title.

Well, fair warning, I have no idea either. Part of the creation process is creating a setting that relates to your characters...so weres don't really have a presence in our Boston. We've got vamps, cultists, and ghosts as our supernatural elements :)

But, if you're still interested anyway, PM me and we can hash something out for introducing you into the next adventure.
