The young couple finally had enough of the blowhard and drove off, and of course the blowhard seemed to think he'd "won" somehow. The only things I could see that he'd managed to do was:
    * piss off the young couple
    * annoy everyone else present at the gas station
    * drive off a potential sale, therefore hurting the nice family that owns the palce
yeah, but look at the positive things he's done, he's kept those no-good drug dealers out of his neighborhood! He's a hero! An upstanding member of the community!!! Wait till the HOA hears of his heroics! They'll vote him member of the month! Why he ought to run for city council with morals like that on display!

I've been accused by such pseudoparanoid busybodies of doing everything from prowling to peeping to burglary by simply driving into a parking lot at night. Anyone who dared to call the cops I told "go ahead"

    Only 1 guy ever did

The cops told him to find something more productive to do with his time, which he also blamed on me for "embarrassing" him.

Heinlein's best novel IMO. I've got a 1st edition paperback here that my mother literally read to pieces. Lots of good sense in there, too.

I'm surprised they didn't arrest him for wasting their time. (Going on the same theory that lets police cite you for calling 911 for non-emergencies, like "Burger King won't do my burger MY WAY!")
