  • Have an interview, need good vibes

So I've been sort of idly applying for new jobs for a while now. This last week I applied to a local resort, and within a day they called me wanting to set up an interview.

I don't know if I'm more nervous about the interview or about the possibility of actually being offered the job. I've never changed jobs before; the two jobs I have now are the only two jobs I've ever had (I started at the motel right out of high school). I hate my current job, but at least it's stable. This new job has the potential to be a lot better paying and very challenging, and I think I would be happier there.

So any prayers, good thoughts, burnt sacrifices, or whatever would be appreciated.

If you want burnt sacrifices, I'll make a point of cooking dinner tomorrow night.

Seriously, good luck, I'm sure you'll do great!

Go get them!! Good Luck. If you want burnt sacrifices, I could go stand in the sun for awhile.

I've already got fingers and toes crossed for another job hopeful, so half that can be for you.
I see this thread is a couple of days old - have you come to any sort of decision on whether you'll take it if offered?
Best of luck regardless, it's always nice to know you're "marketable" even if you decide to stay put.

Thanks guys. I need all the support I can get! Interview is this Tuesday, so hasn't happened yet.

Upon reflection, I've only ever had one job interview. It was at the Golden Arches. It did result in a job offer, but by then I'd already started work at the motel. The motel had a grand total of three housekeeping staff when I started, so when I applied they basically handed me a uniform and said "get to work." As for the paper route...when I showed up for the second day of training my manager at the time was genuinely surprised. He said most people don't show up after the first day.

I have interviewed and hired (and rejected) a lot of people, though. So I've been in the interviewer's chair plenty.

My biggest weakness is this is a full-service hotel (with $300+/night rooms, multiple restaurants, two golf courses, etc), and I work at cheapy-cheapo motel. I went big and bold and applied for the office manager position, but I'll take the office supervisor role or even regular GSR. They have plenty of open positions.

My main concern is how I can diplomatically explain why I want to leave my current position. Boss Lady...let's just say I'm not on her "favorite employees" list. I haven't written a MiM post, but basically she is not a good manager and likes to play favorites and drama games, and I want out. (Other MOD is getting fed up with her, too, and she's been with the company 27 years and has tolerated a lot of BS from past managers. I told Other MOD she should also apply at this resort...hell it's a lot closer to her home than the motel is.) I don't want to vent all that in an interview though, of course. I still have a day to come up with the best way to word that.

I also need to read up more on the new owners of this place. It's a resort that went bankrupt last year, got new owners this year, was going to reopen next spring after some light renovating, but now they want to open this August, and during the busiest weekend for our county as well, so they're rushing to fill positions now. It's either crazy brilliant or crazy insane. It's also an exciting prospect, though. (It also means I will know quickly if I will get a job offer or not, since they basically need to hire all the staff now!)

The usual line that I give is that I was not actively looking for a new job. Someone mentioned this one to me. When I looked it up and saw the opportunities that this job has to offer, I knew I had to apply.

Not sure how well the interview went. The interviewer did most of the talking! I know I'm out for the big manager position, but I'm a contender for the supervisory position a bit further down (as well as other GSR positions), which is about the outcome I expected.

I should know more in a couple days, as they want to start training very soon and thus need to decide very quickly.

So didn't get supervisor position, but got the desk clerk one. I accepted. Their starting deal is better than what I get at the motel after 8 years there. More pay, good benefits. Goodbye cheap motel, hello fancy resort!
