  • Hair product advice?

I have long (waist length) hair that is wavy/curly. I've been thinking of getting a hot air brush since using both a brush and hair dryer makes my bad shoulder hurt. Ideally, I want something that I can use simply as a brush, and have the hair get dried from that.

Does anyone here have any experiences with hot air brushes? I've looked online, but would prefer someone that I know isn't a paid reviewer.

Sorry, can't help. I feel your pain, though. My hair dryer spit out a big spark from under the switch when I turned it off one morning earlier this week so I've been trying to find a new one. I bought one that had good reviews, but I didn't like it, so I returned it and bought another one today, discovered the cord was a little short, bought a third, and didn't like that one either. I think I'll just keep the shorter-cord one and find a different place to use it. (The other two have too much vibration and it bothers my hand.) So tomorrow it's back to Target to return again.

I would think a hot-air brush would get stuck in your hair. It would mine. I am the same type and length as you are. I don't heat-style anymore, so to get spirally waves if I want them, I make a few rope braids and let it air-dry that way. It's less damaging and easier on my arms.

My experience with them is that they tend to overheat really easy. This might have something to do with my thick mass of hair, but I will say I've never liked them much.

I don't want anything to curl my hair - it does that enough when left to air dry. I was planning on using it to straight brush the hair. I've seen ones that even have retractable bristles to avoid tangling, but they don't seem to have much power.

Thanks, Eevie. My hair isn't really all that thick despite the length, but that was one of my concerns based in reviews. I just guess that these things don't have the power to be used for drying hair and are just another styling tool for curls.

I have thick, curly, very long hair. I just cut over a foot off it, so it's only a little past mid back right now, but it's been waist length a lot. Anyway, I do use a couple different hot air brushes and have good luck with them, but I have a process I use to keep from having problems.

First I hit it with a regular hair dryer to get it from wet to damp. I brush it through to get any tangles out and then divide it into about 10 sections. I start with a flat hot air brush and get each section to almost dry, then use a round brush to finish each section off. When I finish each section I move on to the next. I can't remember the product name off hand, but I bought it at Sally's Beauty Supply and it's black and yellow and comes with several different sized round attachments and the flat attachment, which has hard bristles on one side and soft bristles on the other. I've had it for 7 years and have been really happy with it.

Do you have an Ulta store near you? I ended up there for a hair dryer because they have demo models you can actually turn on. Spent a little more than I wanted to but I was able to see how it feels while it's running before buying. (Will do a true test once I take a shower in a little bit, and then hopefully it's one more trip to Target for returns and I'm done.) I didn't notice if they had any of the type you're looking for on the demo wall but it might be worth a shot (and they might be able to give you some advice, too).

Mathnerd - thanks for that review! That was really very helpful. Not only on the usage, but the best way to do it and realistic expectations.

We do have an Ulta nearby! I've never been there - frankly never heard of it, really. I'll make a point of heading there before anyplace else to see what they have and what recommendations they may have.

Yeah, the nearest Ulta to me is almost a half hour away but after 3 tries I decided it was worth the drive. I only heard of it in the first place because it's in the same shopping center as the store I used to work at.
