  • Good stuff, bad stuff and I have too much stuff

The good stuff: I got an apartment through my company, rent is less than $300/mo with electric, water, gas and trash included. 1000 sq ft with a screened balcony.

The bad(ish) stuff: it's up a flight of stairs and I'm mostly moving on my own. I also can't afford to rent a truck, so it's many many trips with boxes in a sedan and one trip with a friend who has a beast of a truck and a trailer and is willing to move the big heavy things.

The I have too much stuff: I spent all day yesterday moving boxes into my apartment, and I'm not even halfway through yet.

That's always me! But now I can't lift anything over 15 lbs, so it would be even harder.

I am lucky that whenever I move I have my big brother to do the moving for me. Only downside is that if he doesn't want to move something, or he can't figure how to place it then it gets the keehul

That sucks about the stairs. In 2009 I lived on the top floor of a four storey walkup. Luckily it came furnished. My brother HATED when I moved in and out, and when I came home for because it was such a chore to do all the flights up. I have been informed by my older brother that when I move out of this apartment, he's leaving my wardrobe in the donation drop off in the building's garage. It's apparently too awkward to carry.

But hopefully you get all your stuff in your new place and get settled. I'm sure that you don't actually have too much stuff. It's just that you can only fit so many things in a sedan.

Last time I moved I hired movers. Unfortunately I had to move out of my apartment before I closed on my condo so I had to have them put pretty much everything in my parents' garage (my bed and armchairs went into the house) and then I had to move again a couple months later (I closed a week and a half later but took advantage of the emptiness to do painting and other stuff). That time I recruited my friend and her husband with their pickup truck, and we got the big stuff moved in 3 trips. The rest came in cars over several days (luckily my parents are only 10 minutes from me).

Three trips of just books, and I still have space on the kitchen counter (furniture is moving tomorrow), but it feels like a lot.

I hate moving....a house/apartment turns into a extra dimensional space that you don't realize you have until you go to pack everything...and that paltry dozen or so boxes you think you need for the small 1 bedroom apartment you have....turns into 100, and that's AFTER you trash half the stuff...

happened to me a few times...

Damn shame I don't live in your area, as I work cheap: feed me and provide me with beer. And for that, I work like a mule, far beyond my size or weight.

'grats on the great find PH!

Best Christmas present ever - my mother-in-law gave my wife and me a moving service gift for an upcoming January relocation. It's totally the bomb to watch someone else carry books.

When I moved into the place I'm living at now, I started moving at 8 in the morning & didn't get done till 10:30 at night!! It was just me, my significant other & a hand truck. Back & forth, shit load of boxes, up a flight of stairs & down again. Up & down ALL DAY! EXHAUSTED doesn't even begin to describe how we felt when were done.

I guess now is not a good time to tell you that I have a truck. Wish you had said something sooner.

Lets see... The Wife has about 200' of shelving for her books. If the average thickness of a book is about an inch, then she has about 2,400 books. If I remember correctly, when we moved down here, the movers had about 30 book boxes. Book boxes are about one cubic foot. They are not very big so that they do not get too heavy.
