  • The Myth of Pick-Up

Not really sucky but kind of annoying.

Someone will call wanting to place an order.

ME: Will that be pick-up or delivery?
    THEM: How long for delivery?
    ME: About 30-50 minutes.
    THEM: How long for pick-up?
ME: I could probably have that ready in about 15 minutes.
THEM: We'll do pick-up. The sooner the better.

They sound like they're really in a hurry to get their pizza. I better get hustling.

So I get off the phone, get the order made and it's out of the oven and boxed up in about 15 minutes. They should be here any second now.

5 minutes past the quoted time: Not here.
10 minutes past the quoted time: Still not here.
20 minutes past the quoted time: WTF!

Finally they show up 45 minutes after the quoted time. We could have delivered it by then.

Incidentally, unless you live REALLY close to the store, or are planning on dining in, you might as well order for delivery and cough up a decent tip. With carryout you may have the order in your hands faster, but you're not going to be able to access the pizza until you get where you're going.

And isn't the point of getting your food faster is so you can enjoy it faster?
    I don't like your attitude!
Yeah? Well you're not EATING my attitude!

Not to mention, you probably have a warming bag to keep it hot on the way to the house. They don't.

    Hope they like cold pizza.

Did you get a complaint from them about the pizza being cold? ~_~

I have a simple procedure for when I order pick-up food: Place order, confirm price, grab keys, leave house.

That or, if you're on the road from work, pull over and place your order then drive directly there.

And go directly home after you pick it up - no stop for gas or smokes.

I've noticed a bad trend at my store.

In the middle of the day, if I quote a guy 15 minutes for a pizza, he will show up in 10 demanding to know why it isn't ready yet.

At the end of he night (especially when we want them to get here and pick up their pizza so we can close the store and go home), if I quote a guy 15 minutes, he'll meander by in 30 or 40 minutes.

          Funny how that works.

If they show up at all for their food especially at that time of the night.
