  • A couple of stories today

I work at a game store in a mall, crazy fun place, the people are awesome (for the most part) and we get free entertainment in the form of bums singing, yelling, harassing, and otherwise making total idiots of themselves in front and near our store.

Today as I was coming into work, there was some random guy outside singing at the top of his lungs. I wouldnt mind if he sang well but I could not understand a word he was saying and he appeared to be drunk.

A group of teenagers come in today with a bunch of food and ask if they can eat at our tables. I politely tell them that the tables are for customers only. They leave. This was 2 hrs ago.

Just now, the same group of teenagers come in and sit at our tables and start opening Yugioh boosters. I ask my coworker if he sold them any yugioh to which he says no. I approach the table and ask them why they think they can use the table space and open packs that they purchased somewhere else. I reiterate (very pissed off voice now) that the tables are for customers only and tell them to get lost. They leave but they are NOT happy. I expect to have to deal with them again in the future.

Seriously, do they bring their own beer to a bar and drink it? No, so why do they think they can do the same thing anywhere else?

Lady phones us and asks us if we are selling FTV:20 (from the vaults 20, 20 of some of the best magic cards from the past 20 years). I respond that yes we are getting them. She then asks if we are selling them for MSRP, oh how I struggled not to laugh in her face. The expensive card in the pack is worth triple the MSRP so what makes her think that we are selling it for that much? I told her no and she got all pissed off and hung up.

Sorry, lady - but there's not a shop on Earth that's going to sell a Jace, the Wallet Sculptor for forty bucks. Can't fault her for trying, but if she's even remotely familiar with the game - and she probably is if she was asking about MSRP - then she knew what answer to expect.

My vendor was selling FTV20s for near MSRP.
I also got a box of Modern Masters for $136

      I <3 my LGS.

Actually i frequent a gaming place often that not only allows this, but encourages it.
They sell boardgames, trading cards... but also have a bar.

They encourage everyone to bring in boardgames and cardgames to play at their tables and don't care if you bought it there or elsewhere. Very often if we bring in games they don't know (a friend of ours often buys japanese or japanese-styled games that aren't common here) they come on over and ask us what it is, how it's played... out of interest.

The only rule is: no outside drinks or foods - outside games though: the more the merrier.

Different business model. Is it in a mall?

Sandi - I get that MSRP lady was apparently hoping to catch someone unawares, but can you fill me in on these cards? Is it a 'package deal' or are they being sold separately or what?

Sorry to be a bit out of the loop here. I stopped playing around the time of the Ice Age expansion. But if they are re-releasing these cards in a pack that just has them in it...Doesn't it mean that that edition of the card will be worth significantly less than the original? Like what happened with the older sets?

This is an extremely limited printing, and all the cards are foiled. Some even get new art. Previous FTVs didn't put the slightest dent in the value of those cards. In fact, most FTV cards are worth MORE than their original printings.

They'll get my foil Squee only when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

FTV is printing a lot of cards that never saw a foil version. Cards like Hymn to Tourach (with new art), Swords to Plowshares, Dark Ritual, Fyndhorn Elves, Thran Dynamo, Tangle Wire, all these cards are worth good money plus the Jace the Mind Sculptor whose foil card is worth $800.

I am so, so glad that I cracked a Jace, The Mind Sculptor just cold out of a $3.99 pack.

I really like Jace, and I have almost all of him (I'm missing Grand Architect); all of them I cracked myself and didn't purchase.

If I found out, though, that I would never get a complete set of him because one version is $160+ right now... hooo boy...

*cackle* So many people at the local card shop hate my guts.

                    As a side note:

Magic cards are not like baseball or other cards - where if there are more of one kind the value goes down. The value is pretty much exclusively based on how powerful/popular the card is in tournament settings (and then if it's a foil or plain). Jace, The Mind Sculptor, is pretty much one of the most powerful cards, and they just introduced a new format that has made him legal again - when he had previously been banned due to his over-power-ed-ness.

So... introducing more Jaces isn't going to bring the value down. The only thing that will do that is if he gets banned again in all official tournament formats.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

Nah, Jace the Mind Sculptor is banned in Modern, too. The only formats where he is legal are Legacy, Vintage, and Commander. (the last of which isn't a tournament format)

Wow he got banned out of Modern as well, that surprises me a bit, but not too much I suppose.

Then I am actually not too sure why his price jumped from $60 to $160+.

Hm, I should see which of my cards the roomie who stole from me left me with and sell them. I havent opened up my cards since the Dark. It *has* been a while.

Those cards can be worth a lot of money. This is a good site to look up prices.

Somewhat off topic but Hubby and I just cleaned out a load of our old cards. Got enough for a new playstation a deckbuilders toolkit and a whole box of M14 boosters off the commons.

Then we found his old Unhinged lands, you know, the full art ones? Some of them were foils. Ebay for the win, over £300 for less than 50 cards. A single foil island sold for over £25.

Oooh the treats we bought ourselves.

On topic, DH just built me the most delightful vampire deck and a sliver themed deck. Can't wait for a tournament to use them at. *Grin*
