  • Do you see me laughing?

    Short but so engraging...

I was outside playing parking lot attendant for someone with a truck and a trailer, and while that was happening 2 guests wandered into the lobby. I saw them but I don't think they saw me. Usually when I leave the desk I close the door between the desk and the breakfast room, but I was figuring I was only going to be gone a minute so I left it open.

I come back in the lobby about 3 minutes after the other guests walked in, to find a girl behind the desk. Her excuse? "Oh we were here for like 20 min waiting and we locked ourselves out of our room!" Cue me holding in rage and explaining that was NOT acceptable. I even pointed to the camera and said she was on video, nothing better be missing.
She thought it was funny. I have a good sense of humour, and I wasn't laughing.

Why do people think that's okay?

When I was at The Motel, we had a little door to the side of the desk. One of my CWs had a bad habit of leaving it open, and more than once I would have to kick out guests who had wandered back there while CW was in the breakroom. It happened at least a handful of times. I don't know what sort of thinking they have that they think they're allowed in the employee-only areas.

They don't think. At all. That's the problem. They just do what they feel like, and cry about the consequences afterward.

Corollary to "Don't mess with the people who serve your food":

Don't mess with the people who have keys to your room.

The only time that happened at any place I worked was when someone jumped the desk and tried to steal from the door during a night audit shift. She's lucky you didn't call the police.

Too bad you don't have Manager With A Spine. Guest goes into the employees-only area? Instant ban from the premises, and no refund on the room they can no longer use.

I have a manager with half a spine, and he had gone home (this was at like 9:30pm last night) so it was just me. She got out of there right away, and nothing was out of place. She was drunk and an idiot, so I really doubt she could have found any sensitive info in that time. If she was more of a problem I would have called the cops.

Ah, that's why she thought it was funny! Idiot + alcohol = even worse idiot.

                  Oh geez. That reminds me...

Yesterday, I was alone in the store for a couple hours. Not an uncommon occurrence, but definitely a frustrating one, at least when we get a mini-rush, as we did. I was trying to give good service, while keeping an eye on things and making sure that no one was walking off with product.

Well, I'm helping one customer, and see a second customer start walking into our back hallway. I project my voice slightly, and say "ma'am, may I help you with something?" She startled, turned towards me, and said "I'm just going to use your bathroom, ok?"

...no. No, it isn't. I politely informed her that our bathroom wasn't for public usage. She then asked if that meant she had to buy a bottle of wine to be able to use it. I apologized again, and said that I can't let anyone back there while I'm alone, and I'm very sorry, but there are several restaurants right nearby that are perfectly happy to let people use their bathrooms.

She and her family walked out. I think I annoyed them. I don't really care. They didn't buy anything.
