  • Do You even know Where You Are?

    Okay, I work at the DMV - STATE government. We have been extremely quiet today, unusual for the first of the month. And then it hit us: a lot of people think that the government shup down applies to us.

    What gets me though are the people who when we offer them the decal to get into the state parks and camp grounds: "How could I use that? They are shut down."

    "No, it's for State parks."

    "Yeah, they are shut down."

    "No, we're not. We are state government and we are open."

    One guy even went so far as to tell the clerk, "No, the state parks are run by the federal government."

    And we gave that genius a license to drive.
    To seek it with thimbles, to seek it with care;
    To pursue it with forks and hope;
    To threaten its life with a railway share;
    To charm it with forks and hope!

    Yep, even the government gets their fair share of genius IQ's, don't they?

    I think I heard a thousand brain cells come to a screeching halt when I read that classic line.

      I didn't stop to think about it until now, but how many poor state employees have been accosted today by SC's looking for someone to blame for whatever part of the federal government they were planning on using being shut down.

        Don't forget when the shut down is over how many federal employees will be yelled at for something they had no control over and didn't want either.

            My sister told me something about the WIC office being close down... and she couldn't figure out why. Well, Sis, WIC is a federal program, soooooo... But the health department itself is still open, because it's state run.

            I like that in our state, the DMV is a part of the State Revenue Office. Which makes it even more stupid for someone to think they were closed.

              I'd have been tempted to tell the idiot that the National Network (Interstates and U.S. highways) was shut down, and that they could only drive on state and county highways.
              Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

                Me too

                Also thank you for reminding me that I need to brave my local DMV tomorrow . (Finally upgrading my licence after so long...I've been on my provisional* licence to the point where I qualified for an upgrade so long ago)

                At least yon local DMV runs on the "Take a number and sit down" scheme, where the ticket numbers are called depending on need/service. (so the guy who is there for something that he could do at the post office has to wait longer than the guy who can ONLY go there or something like that)

                *-after your learners licence in Aussieland, you are placed on your "provisional" licence, which generally means you can drive solo with restrictions. These restrictions and time period vary by state.

                    Out of idle curiosity, is the DOT still operating? I'm assuming the FMCSA isn't doing much, but I was curious about things like weigh stations and inspection stations and such things. Are those run by the state DOT or are they federally funded?

                      Any/all enforcement of DOT rules is done on the state level and below, the feds hold the pursestrings of the highways, but they are not the enforcement arm of any regulations.

                        Thanks, Argabarga. I'm actually a little annoyed because I'd doing some research for a friend and FMCSA hasn't updated their carrier safety overview page for September yet. They normally have the previous month's inspections up by the end of the first weekday of the month. Grump. I'm guessing that page won't be updated until after the shutdown ends.

                          Just a reminder to focus on the SC behavior and leave the debates for Fratching.

                          I'd hate to see this thread get shut down . . . . even government employees need to vent too.
