  • Attempting to scam the hotel? That's a paddlin'

I think I avoided a scam. SC comes in at the start of my shift and has a reservation. He says that the room was supposed to be a comp room. Neither the price nor the reservation notes back this up. So he calls central reservations and puts it on speaker after he gets on with a live agent. Live agent tells him that the notes do indeed show the room is comp. SC asks to speak to customer relations, but agent says it's already closed.

Again, I tell the SC that we can credit the amount back to his card when he can talk to customer relations in the morning, but as of right now, I'm going to have to authorize the CC for the full amount. Surprise surprise it's declined.

He calls his bank. He then tells me to try to authorize a dime to confirm it's a valid card. Um, no. I have to authorize the full amount. Besides, it's a debit card, so that's definitely not going to happen. He tells me the money will be on there in a couple hours.

4 hours later, I run the audit and his room is automatically changed to a no show. Per our policy, I attempt to charge him for the no show charge. Card was still declined.

Yeah, sure, a couple hours it'll be on there. We'll see if he attempts anything in the morning. I doubt it since I put notes of my own in the reservation.

Yeah, I'd say you caught on to something there. People are always trying to find ways around policy, and it's a shame honest people who have no credit cards suffer for this kind of stuff.

I have to wonder, did you call Central Reservations for him or did he dial it himself? Just a hunch if he did it himself, that it might not have been a legit agent.. I had someone try to do that with the huge brick of a cell phone back at the repair center. They "called" our "service contract center" and spoke to a "rep" there. I stepped back to the parts room and called from the parts manager's phone to the Service Contract Confirmation Center and turns out the guy was calling a friend to act as an "agent" to scam free repairs. (I'm supposed to call, not the customer, which is why I did it.)

Back when minutes on a cell phone were close to the price of oil nowadays. For a stereo, which had a service contract price of $45 for a year. I still don't see the "savings."
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

        He made the call himself.

Yea. CR wasn't involved. I hate con-men. They waste so much of everyone's time...

No doubt it was a friend of his pretending to be CR.

I like our system. If I guest gets a comp room from CR, they send the guest a voucher. No voucher = no free room. And when they book the reservation agent leaves a note that the guest has a voucher.
If a guest lies to CR and says they have a voucher and then "conveniently" loses it? I can call CR to request a copy if the voucher but obviously if they don't have one to send the guest must pay.
I love corporate sometimes. They hate scammers as much as we do.

Relayed to me from my CW this evening. He has another reservation, and showed up earlier in the day when a different CW was working. That CW didn't buy it either. He's still scheduled to arrive. I'm going to attempt a no show charge since it's clear that he was able to make it to the hotel, but gave up again.
