  • You're damn lucky you're cute, that's all

Finally got around to taking one cat to the vet's ... I had planned on taking both at once but still haven't sorted out the cat carrier issue (though I did find almost all the screws for the old carrier). Turns out it's a good thing I didn't.

I decided to take Fuzzy Butt as he had a rash of some sort that was coming and going on his forehead, plus a swelling on his lower jaw, right at the centre and just below the lip. The rash was obviously bothering him as he was scratching at it, frequently making it bleed.

Vet diagnoses him as having allergies. To what, I wonder ... cat dander?? Vet says it could be fleas, food or environment. So I get him treated for fleas (and bring home the same treatment for Fuzzy Britches) and the vet gives Fuzzy Butt a couple of shots to deal with his current condition (antibiotics and steroids). He says we can't give him his vaccinations because the antibiotics/steroids will just negate them. Vet also gave me some special food, and advised me to let them eat and drink out of only stainless steel shallow bowls, so as not go goop up the fur and skin on their chins.

The bill so far, for ONE cat, WITHOUT his vaccinations, has hit $250 ...

OTOH, he is vastly improved (although he did seem to be getting better even before the vet's visit).

Next week it's Fuzzy Britches' turn to go visit Mr. Thermometer.

Kit-Ginevra, he's actually gone through a couple of names so far. When I first took him in, he was much friskier (much younger too, of course, LOL) and he was alternately called Darth InVader or Gred-and-Forge. Also a few things that I would have to signify by a long string of asterisks ...

Aethian, I've had a few people tell me their animals (usually dogs) frequently get allergies. They think it's got something to do with the level of pollution here, which wouldn't surprise me at all. My cats don't go outside, but of course the house is not airtight ... and when the weather's been nice (which has been most of this summer) I do keep the windows open.

My husband had a dog who was allergic to synthetic fibers. So, carpet, upholstery, most clothes... It was rough!
