  • I think we should do something nice for employees on Black Friday!

So many stores have 'killed' thanksgiving not only for the employees but the families of customers who are going to ditch their loved ones to get a good deal on something. But it's the employees that will be stuck with the mess, some for 24 or 48 hours straight for the stores doing a marathon run over Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I hope everyone reading this will take a vow: Maybe on your way to dinner with friends and family, stop by a Macys, Target, Best Buy, etc. with some cookies or other snacks and some kind words for the employees who will be stuck dealing with the madness. Hopefully, it will make their day a little easier and maybe remind the shoppers who are there that there are more important things in life that they should focus on!

Also, keep those in the call centers in your thoughts as we field calls from customers on Thanksgiving and Black Friday

I will be bartending for the day shifts on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday. But it's always been pretty chill, both at my bar and in Key West, on those days, so no worries on my end.

But after my shifts, I shall drink a beer in honor of my retail brethren, as I would not want to be in their shoes those days. After all, it's the least I could do!

I always stop at Starbucks on my way to Thanksgiving dinner (they're usually open till I think 5:00). I get a drink and leave a big tip (like $10 or $20). I do the same on Christmas. I go almost every morning on my way to work and normally don't tip because I use a gift card so I like to leave them something (even though they do get out in time to eat dinner, assuming their dinners are close by).

I never minded working Black Friday too much; at least it made the day go fast (I don't know if I'd still feel that way if I was in the stores now; things just aren't quite the same anymore). But then the bookstore doesn't really do the same kind of madness deals you find at Best Buy or Walmart. Most of our extra traffic was more just because people were already out shopping.

Sadly employees at Walmart and Target will likely be disallowed from receiving anything.

Last year one of hubby's coworkers had the evening shift (security) for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we brought him a hot meal both evenings.
