  • Impatient much?

Saw this at the checkout line last night. Brand new, super duper, giant fancy supermarket opened on my route home. I'm thrilled because its my store of choice, and if i take a different route home, its still on my way.

They also sell alcohol, but if the cashier is underage, they have to get someone else to ring that for them. So lady in front of me has a bottle of wine, so cashier follows protocol, and calls for someone to ring. It didn't take more than 2 mintues but customer in front had all sorts of helpful suggestions! She did ask how she would know so she could avoid this in the future; cashier told her which color tag to look for. Then she said to cashier, a HS kid, "you might want to suggest they have designated lanes for booze purchase" And repeated a couple of times.

How about you go suggest that to CS or management? cashier can't do a darn thing about it; its COMPANY policy. Manager comes, rings, and all is well. Then she asks for cash back, in certain denominations. Cashier gives it to her, cust. stops and claims she didn't get her five $1s, but only a $5. Cashier said no, i gave it to you, cust. insisted no, cashier again calls for help. In th meantime, cust. exclaims "OH, here it is, it fell somewhere" no apology, nothing. I felt bad for the cashier as she was doing her job the way it was supposed to be done. But some people are just never happy.

My experience is that it's pretty common that underage cashiers can't ring up alcohol. So the answer to the question how could she avoid this in the future? Don't go to an obviously underage cashier! ( I once got behind a customer who had to wait for someone to ring up his liquor purchase since the cashier was underage, and after I checked out, I looked at the other lanes, and clearly my lane was the only one staffed by an underage cashier. )

This is what I like about the Warehouse: we rarely have any cashiers under the legal age for tobacco/alcohol. It would be a pain to have to keep coming back to an underage cashier, partly because a lot of people do buy their beer and wine; partly because it would take way too long to keep having to do it.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

It's not always that obvious. I turned 44 in September and got carded not only the day after my birthday, but I got carded yesterday.

This is why when I got my first job at Walmart at age 18, they actually asked my age first. Seems that location, at least, had the standing policy of not register-training anyone under 18, because apparently (in NY, at least) 18 and up could sell alcohol, but under-18s could not. Made sense to me. That way no cashier would be stuck having to call a manager for alcohol purchases.

We had this same policy in the poundshop too. The customer needs to just learn not to butt her nose into something she has no idea about.
