So apparently in the new year, Australia gained a new city....the city of Auckland!

Yeah....this is the New Zealand Auckland we're talking about

I'm not too surprised. After all, CNN is a U.S.-based news channel (you've probably seen the maps used by U.S. channels to show the weather - they show a disembodied "lower 48", with no sign that either Canada or Mexico exists). Auckland is in the Southern Hemisphere, and was originally settled by the British? Must be part of Australia.

Well there was this classic from NBC in 2012 to further support your point:

And their epic fail when reporting recent bushfires

I went to Auckland a couple years ago (I can't believe it's been two years already). Oddly enough, I can't find an Australia stamp on my passport anywhere.

OK, I must be really dumb, but what's wrong with the map showing the bushfires?

In New South Wales, there was a string of dangerous bush fires. NBC decided to do a report on it and used a map that they didn't understand. As you can see, those fires are everywhere whereas the actual problem was just in one place. I mean, how many bush fires could possibly be a threat to the people in the middle of a desert?

Actually, to be fair, at the time there were fires reported in all those locations. It's just most of them were small incidents or backburning. The problem came when they tried to claim that, as Greenday said, these fires were all the massive NSW fires that put lives at risk.

Backburning is usually reported in ADVANCE if it's being conducted by CFS/MFS crews. (Country Fire Service/Metro Fire Service).

Also for some incredibly bizarre reason, I live in a metro suburb, yet there's a CFS station in my suburb and a metro service in a nearby suburb. O.o

Very true, but it also usually appears on the CFA maps so that, if people smell smoke, they know where the fires are. If CNN referred to one of those, that's where they might have seen it.
