Sims 3 advice (better known as "Guide, Dang It"

So I recently bought a copy of Sims 3. Very happy that this laptop can take it without crapping out the system. Signed up online, used the SimPoints they give you when you sign up (all 500 of them...) and managed to download stuff off of the store.

Problem is, I can't download anything from the Exchange. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Given you need a registered game to download stuff from the store, I thought it wouldn't be an issue...
