  • YouTube Lets Play vids

I'm thinking of getting into this. 1. Cause I think it would be fun for me. 2. I derp enough that I think someone else might get a kick out of watching me.

Anyone have any advice and would anyone like to help me wade through things so I can kinda make the first vid a success?

There's some opinion here, but I think the best Let's Play videos are the ones with multiple players (for reference, see any of the Achievement Hunter Let's Plays for Worms). Having back and forth banter between 2+ people keeps things interesting and avoids a lot of dead air. Single player LPs are possible, but you need to do a lot of talking, and keep things fun/funny/interesting the whole time. Edit: A good example of a single player Let's Play would also come from the AH gang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_E96i-u_5E0 (NSFW, language)

Yea I have a few people interested in Minecraft CTM maps. And I already talk to myself when not recording.

First off, let me say doing LPs is really fun! Me and my friend Razz did Let's Plays of Amnesia for a while. I will admit that they didn't really catch on. But they were fun and I learned a lot!

Something I will advise is, if possible, if you're playing a game that involves puzzle solving or notes, do your absolute best to read and understand them. Even if you're reading out loud, because you're distracted by trying to stay entertaining, a lot of stuff can still go over your head and make for a dead stop in your gameplay. This happened to us a couple of times.

Another thing I will suggest (and is something we didn't do) ... Advertise! Post your videos around! We probably would have had way more subscribers if we'd done this.

Try to pick games that are up-and-coming; things that are currently popular. Playing an older game might be a lot of fun and get great content out of you, but is unlikely to be searched for on Youtube often. Staying current is something I see a lot of Let's Players jumping on immediately.

Figure out a strategy for Dead Air. It happens to the best of us and is usually cured by good editing, but if it's happening during a crucial part there isn't much you can do about it. Pewdie is known for finding something to talk to to keep from having Dead Air. Markiplier lets us know exactly what he's planning on doing every step of the way, and makes up jokes about what "crazy butt stabbers" could be lurking in the dark. Cry isn't afraid to cut large portions out to keep the video flowing.

Try to find a good way to begin and even more importantly, end your videos. Having videos that just suddenly cut off in the middle of footage is jarring and upsetting if there isn't another part. Having a moment to gradually bring your viewers out of the video helps a lot. Ask your viewers to like, drop a comment, share and subscribe. It sounds annoying, and you can assume they already know, but I can't count the amount of times I've FORGOTTEN to subscribe to a channel I liked. Advertising WORKS!

If you play a game with dark lighting, crank your gamma WAY UP. This isn't to keep you from being afraid if you're going the horror game route, it's for your audience who don't have all the lights off or aren't watching full screen. They need to be able to see, even in the dark or the video will be boring!

There's really only a few LP'ers I watch on a regular basis, but I've enjoyed the stuff from both solo producers and co-ops (mostly Brainscratch Commentaries for non-solo vids). I wouldn't really get into it myself because there are just so many LP producers it's hard to give it a new angle or tone that hasn't already been done and imitated.

One thing I'd stress is that if you plan on doing Youtube vids, be prepared for trolls and idiots and people telling you that X game has already been reviewed by such and such or that you're copying so and so, standard crap like that.

First off; Have FUN. If the game you're playing isn't fun, or the LP isn't feeling fun for you, don't feel bad about taking a break or even abandoning that game.

Secondly, depending on the game you want to play, dead air is fine; for example Bastion, which has strengths in its Amazing Soundtrack and Narration doesn't need much commentary at all; just some quiet explanation of basic mechanics and maybe discussing what you're doing in a challenge area.

Thirdly, Stand upon the shoulders of giants; check out LPs made by other people; for example Psychedelic Eyeball, Skippy Granola, Geop, and Lazyfire, to name a few of the LPers I like, each have different styles of play and commentary; Geop, for example, is very informative, not just about the game, but also about potential historical context (Check out his Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 LPs on LParchive.org). In comparison, Skippy is more of a 'chill dude talking with buddies'; probably his most madcap and outright insane LP was Saint's Row 3, which offers the exaggerated shenanigans of the game (and his co-op partners) up to the incredulity of the players and viewers.

Lemme just link some examples for you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oFL3...x4DLlZ&index=5 Skippy Granola's LP of Saint's Row 3, video 4; Combine the almost-chill of Skippy and the manic energy of Panzer Skank, and you get one of the funniest videos of the LP.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtCggi6AWgw Geop's LP of Assassin's Creed 2, video 2 (just entering the Animus). It starts with no commentary over the cutscene, for obvious reasons, but Geop does offer very solid commentary, and soon segues into history commentary which fits extremely well with the game he was playing.
