Hey CS’ers, long time lurker, first SC post. So, some background; I work in the hospitality industry, specifically I am the Front Desk Manager at a hotel that’s part of one of the major hospitality corporations. As such, I have seen my fair share of bizarre things. Most of the time it’s a matter of deal with the issue, make the guest happy and carry on but every once in a while, someone will set off alarm bells in my head.

So, there has been a “guest” hanging out in my lobby for the past couple days. She does the normal stuff, like eat breakfast, use our business center etc., only, she is not actually a registered guest. Last night she was using our business center, sending emails to communicate with a guest that is arriving tomorrow. I know, because I made the reservation for the guy last night. She has been hanging out in the lobby for the last 2 days, making all sorts of special requests. So, while the setup is a little odd, it’s nothing alarming, now for the potential suck.

Some of her requests have been really weird though.

    - She can’t be around microwave ovens, they mess with her head. I’m not sure about this one; she was unclear as to how. Also, there is a microwave is every freaking room.
    - She had us remove our deodorizing spray in the lobby bathroom, because the scent is “unhealthy to humans.” Bear in mind this is an automatic dispensing fixture. She had us remove the offending fixture.
    - She complained that the lobby bathroom doesn’t have a coatrack to hang her jacket, scarf, and purse.
    - She wants a soundproof/quite room, with no one else nearby. This is difficult. We are located in a business sector, and we are often sold out 5 nights a week. There is construction going on behind us where a new hotel is being built. There is also a major storm coming through our area, and surprise! People want rooms.
    - She has changed her mind a dozen times on which room she wants to stay in due to noise/evil alien microwave rays/alignments of the planets.

Keep in mind; she is not an actual guest yet.

And some personal observations and things I have discovered by talking to coworkers/other local area hotels.

    - She has no history of staying with any of the local areas hotels. However, she has been seen wandering around several of their lobbies, mooching breakfast, using business centers, complaining about lack of accommodations in lobby restrooms.
    - I watched as she left today, did not see her get in a vehicle, I believe she walked.
    - She was wearing the same clothes as yesterday, aaaaand the day before (thank you security cameras).

At this point I am thinking she may be homeless, and I am not sure how this all ties in with the dude who made a reservation for tomorrow. She seems to know him. At this point, I am just kind of weirded out and not sure what do with this situation. I am wondering if the dude with the reservation knows what he is getting into, and if this will end up really being that bad of a suck…

…the microwave one is new though.

Should be harmless to her, then how did she convince them to do that, anyway? o_O Especially as she's not a paying guest?

At this point, I would say that you have enough ammo to go to management and ask them to let you guys kick her out whenever she blows in, as she's being a nuisance, and taking up resources that paying guests could be using.

As for that guest she was "helping" -- If you can, speak with him before/during check-in and make sure that he knows she does NOT work for the hotel nor represent you in any way, and that any special deals/amenities she offered him exist solely within her own mind. Who knows what she promised him? >_>

Why on earth does the hotel accommodate ANY of her special requests? She's not even a paying customer, yet she's eating breakfast there and making demands? Wow.

Let us know what happens. And also Welcome to CS!!

Maybe she got her stuff stolen and is waiting for her knight to arrive?

It sounds like she is mentally ill and possibly homeless. Mgmt. needs to have a chat with the mysterious guest arriving soon to find out what the heck is going on and if there's a plan to help her... mysterious guest could be a relative whom she has summoned for help (but alas she's probably asked for help with the evil air fresheners and mind-controlling microwaves, not help with psychiatric care.)

In any case, if mysterious guest can't help her, mgmt. needs to call county social services. The woman clearly requires mental health care.

I can't disagree with the compassionate decision of letting her hang out for a couple days as long as she isn't too disruptive to your business, but it's clear your hotel lobby acting as a mental-health shelter is not a tenable long-term plan.

Possibly the nicest that has ever been worded here.

Welcome aboard Dray! Hope you get some resolution here. And bring some aluminium foil to work with you; sounds like the microwaves are up to no good.

I agree with contacting the local mental-health services. This situation is a liability nightmare waiting to happen.

                An update of sorts:

Mysterious microwave lady was once again hanging out in the lobby today. First shift coworkers said she had been in and out all day waiting for her friend to arrive. She showed back up about 4 o’clock this evening. She seemed rather agitated that he hadn’t checked in yet. It seems the only method she had to communicate with the actual guest was via email, which is why she has been using our business center. I declined to let her make a long distance call from the front desk, at which point I got the cat-butt face, and she left mumbling something to the effect of “well, if he is going to cancel he better do it.” That’s the last I have seen of her since writing this post.

Ironically enough, the actual guest called back to cancel the reservation about an hour later. He was hesitant to give me any sort of detail on the microwave crazy go-round lady. So…yeah…something definitely weird going on here. Something tells me, she will be back tomorrow.

I appreciate the thoughtful responses I'm reading in this forum, yet I realize too that I wouldn't be so patient. I'd be telling the woman she had to leave and eventually, if she refused, I'd be calling security or the authorities to remove her.

Yeah, it's time to cut her off. You've been extremely tolerant in the hoped that the actual guest would show up and maybe help her, but clearly that wasn't his aim after all. The woman needs to be told politely and firmly that unless she's renting a room, she has to depart. You may need to call in the authorities to trespass her, because I'm betting she won't leave willingly.

I knew a lady that had a metal plate in her skull (replacing an entire section of skull in fact) and she had to avoid microwaves due to issues pertaining to that. She once explained it to me, but I was a teenager and had better things to remember at the time.

Then there was the conspiracy nut that firmly believed her microwave could read her mind, when I was working at the repair center. I'm surprised I didn't flat out ask her why she owned one if she thought it was doing so. Then I realized that it didn't matter, because if it was reading her mind, it'd either be a) a short read, or b) what would a microwave do with that sort of information in the first place?
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

Because the toaster oven told her to get one.

And if you installed one, she'd be complaining AGAIN, because half the crooks in town would be waiting for her to "settle in" (unable to react quickly in the event of theft), and then walk off with her jacket, scarf, and purse. As for the other half of the crooks, they'd be waiting to prey on her male counterpart.
