  • Help with a riddle.

I've tried to figure this one out, but for the life of me I can not.

    The riddle is :

There is a thief who wanted to get into a magic guild, but there is a large golem he can not get past. So he waits.

An apprentice approaches and the golem says "12". The apprentice answers "6" The golem lets him in.

    The thief waits some more.

A second apprentice approaches and the golem says "6" and the mage answers 3.

So the thief thinks he knows how to gets past the golem and struts up to the golem.

The golem says "10" and the thief answers 5. The golem's arms come crashing down killing the thief. What should he have said?

(Highlight below this for a spoiler)

The answer was 3, but I can't figure out how in the world this is the case.

Without reading anyone's answer or the hidden hint, I am going to say that to the golem's "ten" the thief should have said "three."

For some reason this reminds me of a really bad dubbing fail they did in the Negima English dub (the first series).

In this case, they have to get past a golem who asks them a series of questions involving translating words. In the Japanese version, they're English words and the girls have to answer them using some weird combination of twister/scrabble. The twister "circles" are marked with Japanese symbols.

In the English version, it changes into Latin (which makes zero sense as the series does not hide the fact they're in Japan) but the girls still answer....with Japanese symbols

You guys are forgetting the greatest riddle of all-time:

What is the airspeed of an unladen swallow?

              The answer, of course, is:

Skilled programmers aren't cheap. Cheap programmers aren't skilled.

It also kind of reminds me of the one where you have a 3 gallon and a 5 gallon bucket, and you have to get 4 gallons of water. I actually "devised" a math formula for that one time...

                Let V1 = 3
                Let V2 = 5

                Then, solve:

                4= (2(V1) - V2) + V1
