  • Teenage girl gives big tip, dad wants it back.... NOT GONNA HAPPEN

This happened to 1 of my fellow drivers.... He took a delivery to a house, a teenage girl answers the door, and leaves a big tip, something like a $15 tip I think. Apparently she had given way too much, because her dad called the store and started bitching about how the driver ripped her off and scammed her Um no, you the customer, specifically the one who answers the door and is doing the paying, decides how much of a tip to leave, either by adding how much the tip is on your credit card, or asking for a certain amount back when we make change after you give us big bills.
Now comes the funny part.... Dad says he demands the driver come back to the house and give the money back. Ok, no driver is going to do that, at least not at our store. Your stupid daughter was the one who tipped. You want to be in charge of how much of a tip is left to the driver? Then get off your fat ass and answer the door yourself. We are not going to be accused of ripping your daughter off, and then waste our gas and time to go back to the store and give you our tip back. You fucked up with how much you wanted to tip because you decided to be lazy and sent your daughter, who obviously has no clue how to leave a proper tip, to handle the tipping, and now you gotta suffer the consequences.
Now some of you are probably thinking that our manager made the driver go back, right? Wrong! Our manager is very cool and he flat out told the man "no". He told him his daughter left the tip, and that he was not going to be sending the driver back out to give the tip back. After the dad bitched and complained some more, the manager said, " I will either give you $10 out of my own pocket, or give you a $10 credit on your next order." I told him I wouldn't have given the customer anything, as it was the dad's mistake and thus his own fault.
Main point is people, you don't ever leave a tip and then ask for it back. And you certainly do not send your kids to do something that an adult obviously should be doing.

Its always the reverse for me, people send kids to the door... who pocket the tip. I know this because the parents themselves always tip.

Maybe the dad had a right to complain, but not demand the driver come back. At least the manager was level-headed about it. I would have told the guy since he overtipped this time to not tip as much or not at all on the next visit, and let the next driver know about it (assuming it would be the same driver).

Dad's mistake, dad's problem. He's got no right to complain, he deserves no compensation, and I don't think that telling him to take it out on the next order is a good idea either - he'd probably stop tipping entirely, and forever.

I think he should get nothing, and should be watched - if he starts not tipping, just cut him off.

I once did that at a bar. Felt horrible afterwards, and the next time I came, I tipped DOUBLE to make it up to the servers.

The father should be ashamed of himself!

He did have a right to complain.... to his daughter about leaving big tips. The delivery driver did nothing wrong, and he was accusing the driver of taking too much. I myself do not care how much they tip or how big it is, that is entirely up to them. When I get cash, I will tell them the total. So if its $15 and they give me a twenty dollar bill, then I let them know they have $5 coming back to them, and then they decide how much they want back.
I salute my manager for doing the right thing and not making the driver go back to the house and waste gas and time. Point is, the guy needs to get off his lazy ass and handle tipping on his own. If you as the customer tip too much, suck it up and take it like a man, and learn from your mistake.

Agreed. The manager gave him more than I would have. I would have told the dad to fuck right the fuck off.

When I was a kid I answered the door for the pizza deliverer and gave him a huge tip. I think the total came to $15, I gave him two twenties and said "keep the change." When my parents asked me for the change and I told them I gave him the $40, they were quite upset to say the least... but they didn't call the pizza place to demand their tip back.

Instead, I paid for it through extra chores that week.

My parents likely wouldn't have made me pay them back for it. They would have told me I shouldn't have tipped that much, sure, but they would have said "Well, at least we made the driver very happy."

Of course, they'd never have let me answer the door again if I did that.

I did the same thing one time. Mom was upset, but we'd never had a conversation about tipping etiquette. I just knew it was something you did, and mom had given me money and said "This is for the pizza." So guess where the money went?

In that case I'd have told your mom exactly what I told mine: It's your fault for not telling me what to leave as a tip. That back-talk earned me a few more extra chores... but I don't regret saying it!

With a tip like that, they'll never have to wait long for a pizza ever again. She did that dad a favor.

But it's so obviously the driver ripping him off. Darling spoiled-brat, uh, daughter is PERFECT.

I have had FAR TOO MANY of those little shit head kids. some do it because they KNOW they can get away with stealing the drivers tip and others just do it because..... Mom and/or Dad uses them as a human shield.

I had nearly the same thing happen to me several years ago. I was dispatched with a single pizza to a known stiffer address. The total was around $14.50. When I knocked on the door a young girl about 8 comes out of the back of the house. She hands me a $20 bill, takes the pizza and rapidly walks away, not even allowing me to pull change out of my pocket.

NICE!!!!!! SCORE!!!!!! but then no thing goes unpunished. By the time I arrive3d back at the store, MOMMMMYYYYYY was on the phone screaming at the MOD about how I "ripped them off" AND there was "supposed to be" a 2d pizza on the order (NOT).

I told the MOD what had happened and I was "forced" to give them change for the first order and give them a 2d pizza for free.

Another driver experienced almost the same thing but with a twist.

He delivered to a nice suburban house. A guy and his buddies were sitting in the garage drinking and had ordered pizza. The guy order 2 or 3 pizzas for a total of around say $32. he gave the driver 2 $20 bills and said keep the change. The driver then starts to walk back to his vehicle. A girls runs out of the house and stops the driver. She wants all the money her "father" gave the driver and wants to pay for the order herself.

Now if that were me, no dice. the transaction was done and complete (with a decent tips to boot). Sadly the driver DID the exchange and got paid with EXACT change.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.
