  • The Ol' Switcheroo

Yesterday at the Big Yellow Price Tag, one of our home theater guys walked up on a dude opening brand new boxes of high end SONOS audio components and putting them in the packages of "open box" equipment from the same brand. He tells him to stop and is promptly ignored. Loss prevention gets involved and another associate comes flying across the store to put the SC in his place.

Now we have even more "open box" equipment.

I wish we could launch people like this off a steam catapult... and into a brick wall.

I'm not sure if I'm more shocked he didn't stop doing it when he was caught, or whether it deserves the stupid award for thinking ignoring the staff would work as a strategy!

      Storage

I hope you put those open boxes in storage for a month or so, as I will not be surprised if he or friend show up in the next week demanding where the discounted open boxes are.

That is probably why he did not stop, the more boxes he opens, the more his friend can come in and buy on discount.

Make sure they do not profit from their actions.

      Was the box openner banned?

I wish I could be surprised, but after watching an idiot change a UPC on an item to something waaaay less expensive... I think people see "ripping off the man," and think it means, "the man can't do jack to me!" Hope you enjoy the perm banning and possibly shiny new bracelets!

The ol' Fraud triangle - people need Motive/Pressure, Opportunity and Rationalisation.

            In this case:
Pressure: I want new stuff and I'm broke and a leach on society
Opportunity: Boxes are there, lets open them!
Rationalisation: I'm a giant douchwaffle with no concept of right or wrong

Are you kidding, walls love being Agents of Karma! Slam some scammer's head into the wall a few times, the wall can sigh happily and say, "my job is done here."
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I only overheard the incident via the walkie talkies we carry. He was invited to leave the store and loss prevention had him on video. If he comes back he'll be leaving again-- in handcuffs.

There's an old story at my store from before my time how the manager (apparently) chained a suspected shoplifter to a water-pip out the back (apparently naked too - not sure how that happened) and took photos of him while he waited for the police to arrive.

Said manager was also (apparently) a total psycho, got fire several weeks later for an unrelated incident and kept coming in to work as if nothing had happened, police came a second time... I'll have to find out the full story and post
