  • OK, this was probably a dick move, but . . .

my back was killing me at the thought of doing this.

In the nursing dept at the CC where I teach, we have four computer carts that hold about 25 computers each. We have two in classroom/labs because those rooms aren't "on the grid" . . . because they're classified as labs we don't have to share them with the rest of the college. A third is in our skills lab, and the fourth in the storeage room; they get moved to where we need them.

The carts can be a pain; they are hard to move and some faculty have a habit of letting students pull power cords from the slots and generally keep the carts in messy condition.

Last week, we got four new carts to address that issue; the design will make it impossible for students to mess up the power cords and we won't have the cord spaghetti (more like Gordian knots) anymore. My CW in charge of the carts wanted help to transfer the laptops to the new carts.

I bailed on that. Just putting laptops away after an exam gives me a horrible backache. Actually redoing the carts would have been a nightmare. I didn't say anything, but made a quick and quiet exit.

The faculty who were left were the ones who cause the majority of the problems with the carts to begin with . . . that is, they don't control the computers or the students and make sure the equipment is taken care of and put away properly. So honestly, I don't feel too guilty.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

I sure hope not. Gordian knots are meant to be sliced through

I have a coworker with issues. She's a hard worker, and she knows her stuff, but she has major issues with control. Her husband is a verbal abuser, and she's spent her entire adult life stressed out over what he'll do or say next. At work, this translates into her inability to work as a team, ask for help, or let go of something that she can't do but needs to be done.

I've offered, I've practically begged, to help her with a court filing or big project, only to be rejected. So I don't bother now, except for a "I'm free to help if you need anything" for form's sake. If she botches it, she botches it on her own.
