  • Womens Bathing Suits

I have packed on more than a few lbs lately, so am feeling like I'm not in my best bathing suit body, so when I've been swimming I have been wearing board shorts to cover up the saddle bag/thunder thigh area, which means that my one piece suits are out and I have to wear bikini tops. I have always been a little top heavy, so the only bikini tops I have found that work well for me are the kind with the thicker ties around the back and around the back of the neck (string bikinis don't do it, and the halter top style need to be too small in order to hold the boobs in place that the suit gets see-through stretched or if a little bigger the 'waist' band doesn't touch so rides down and the boobs get weirdly flattened.)

I have also been swimming a lot lately, because of the extra lbs I mentioned above, which means I have been wearing my bathing suit a lot. I have been getting knots and bruises in the back of my neck where the knot from the ties goes. Now I have always been the type of person who bruises and swells up easily (and am on iron pills prescription to help) so I am not particularly puzzled, but it also hurts.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a type of bathing suit that could work with my particular body type/neurosis?

Well, if all you need is the top part, why not see if a sports bra would work?

Why are one pieces out? It's what I wear when I don't want my top floating up. You can get a tankini, so the top part is more fitting. I like the ones where the back straps can detach - I cross them at my back which helps hold the girls in place.

That's what I was going to suggest too.

ETA I've heard good things about swimoutlet.com - mayvbe it would be worthwhile checking them out?

If you're doing laps or similar in a swimming pool, I'd suggest investing in a one piece from a sports store. Their one pieces are designed to keep everything in, so to speak. You can get two pieces as well, which look like a crop top. Most of them have a racer back, which then has a circle in the back. Avoid the ones that have the low/scoop back as they're not quite as supportive. Bras don't survive in swimming pool!

If you're after a two piece for leisure however, then I strongly recommend getting a tankini. Try and find one with full cup support, although it may take a little hunting. The plus side is, is that you can wear the top out in public if it's plain enough. I'd go for a thick strapped one if you're top-heavy and staying away from halters.

I use board shorts and a 'rashie' - basically, a t-shirt designed for wearing in water. It originated as a surfer's shirt, partly to prevent sunburn.

            Examples of rashies.

Another option is the 'burkini': the original ones (afaik) were designed by a Lebanese-Australian woman, for Muslim Australians. They've become quite accepted here, especially in the areas where there are a lot of Muslims (such as where I live).

There's no religious issues with non-Muslims wearing them, and they're damned good for either body modesty or sun protection. Their 'sun safe' range is more Euro-descended-Australian (my variant of Australian culture) in style, if you would prefer to look more "normal" (whatever that is) and less Muslim.

If you look through the burkini site, please be forgiving of their English-as-a-second-language grammar.
